Tattoos have been around for thousands of years, primarily as an artform. But what if they had a purpose, beyond just aesthetics? “I think that we can upgrade tattoo inks to give people new abilities,” says Carson Bruns, a mechanical engineer professor at the University of Colorado. Bruns is also a tattoo aficionado. "I got my first tattoo when I was 19 years old, and I’ve been addicted to tattoos ever since," Bruns says.He spends his days in a lab, working to bring an ancient artform into the 21st Century. "My idea is that, by adding new function, new properties to the tattoo inks, that tattoos could potentially be used for more than just art," he says. Bruns is focused on a specific type of tattoo ink, one that would embed tiny microcapsules filled with certain material underneath the skin. One of his most promising developments would fill those capsules with UV dye. It’d essentially be a tattoo that tells you when you need to apply sunscreen. "So our tattoo, anytime you can see it, anytime it's visible to you, that's a sign your skin is dangerously exposed to UV light and its increasing your risk to skin cancer,” Bruns explains. Other types of inks would be heat-sensitive, like the squares he's tested on his own skin. Those would only appear when your body reached a certain temperature. "A tattooable thermometer, made of these heat sensitive tattoo inks could be a way to make it more accessible for people to read their body temp and check up on their own health," he says. Bruns says the possibilities are endless. "I like to joke tattoos can give you superpowers,” he says. “They can give our skin new properties we don't currently have."Bruns hopes that one day, we might even be able to come up with tattoo inks that could conduct electricity or even tell us our blood sugar or blood alcohol levels. 1843

A family of four was among the 10 people killed Sunday in a fiery plane crash in Addison, Texas.Brian Ellard, 53, Alice Maritato, 15, and Dylan Maritato,13, were among the five people identified by the Dallas County medical examiner's office on Monday.A statement from the Catholic Diocese of Dallas said Ellard was Alice and Dylan's stepfather, and named Ornella Ellard -- the children's mother and Brian Ellard's wife -- as another victim of the crash. Mille Lire, a Dallas restaurant Brian Ellard co-owned, also issued a statement naming Ornella Ellard as a victim in the deadly crash."The Catholic Diocese of Dallas grieves with the communities of All Saints Catholic School in Dallas and John Paul II High School in Plano as we mourn the deaths of passengers Dylan and Alice Maritato, and their mother and stepfather, Ornella and Brian Ellard," Catholic Diocese of Dallas Bishop Edward J. Burns said in a statement. "As a community, we are saddened at the tragic loss of all who perished in the crash and offer special prayers for their families."The Beechcraft Super King Air 350 aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff Sunday morning when it veered into a private hangar and burst into flames. There were no survivors. Two of those on board were members of the flight crew and the other eight were passengers, National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Bruce Landsberg told reporters during a news conference Sunday night. The medical examiner has named five of those killed. Also identified were Stephen Lee Thelen, 58; and Matthew Palmer, 27.Members of the NTSB arrived on the scene to investigate the crash Sunday and began assessing the damage to the plane immediately, Jennifer Rodi, senior air safety investigator with the NTSB, told reporters.Landsberg announced Monday that NTSB investigators had found the plane's 1842

A 9-year-old child accused of causing a mobile home fire that killed three children and two adults in central Illinois has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder. The juvenile also was charged with two counts of arson and one count of aggravated arson."You know, would he? I don't know if he understands what he's really done," neighbor Liza Munoz said. "Do you know what I mean? Can you imagine? And a child doing that?" The April 6 fire killed a 1-year-old, two 2-year-olds, a 34-year-old man and a 69-year-old woman at the Timberline Mobile Home Park near the village of Goodfield, about 150 miles southwest of Chicago.Woodford County Coroner Tim Ruestman said the fire was started intentionally. No child as young as this one has been accused in a mass killing since at least 2006, according to a mass murder database that tracks all U.S. homicides since then in which four or more people were killed, not including the offender, over a period of 24 hours, regardless of weapon, location, victim-offender relationship or motive."I think that he should be followed well into his 30s or 40s," Munoz said. "You know, he should be on probation for a long time for this. It shouldn't just be until he's 18." 1230

A man is in custody after he tried to enter St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York on Wednesday night with gallons of gasoline, lighter fluid and lighters, authorities said. When a security officer at the cathedral stopped the 37-year-old man, he left the church and was detained shortly after by counterterrorism officers, NYPD's John Miller said at a news conference. The man, who is from New Jersey and is known to police, spilled some of the gasoline as the security officer stopped him in the church and forced him to turn around, Miller said."It's hard to say exactly what his intentions were but I think the totality of circumstances of an individual walking into an iconic location like St. Patrick's Cathedral, carrying over four gallons of gasoline, two bottles of lighter fluid and lighters is something we would have great concern over," Miller said. Before entering the church, the man retrieved the items from a minivan he had parked near the church, Miller said. The NYPD swept that vehicle and did not find any additional materials. The man initially told officers he was cutting through the cathedral to get to Madison Avenue and that his car had run out of gas, but Miller said when officers checked his car, it had gas.The man has not been identified but when he is charged with a crime, police will release his identity, Miller added.Authorities described him as emotionally disturbed but said it's too early to tell what his motive was or whether it's connected to terrorism.Nobody was injured in the incident and police are investigating. St. Patrick's Cathedral, which opened its doors in 1879, is a prominent landmark in the city. The incident comes days after the 1692
