SAN DIEGO — A couple who evacuated from the Woolsey Fire in Los Angeles says their Airbnb hosts kicked them out of their unit and cleaned out all their belongings, forcing them to live with relatives in San Diego.Ben and Jessica Wells said they rented out the Airbnb unit in July, paying in advance through May.The newlywed couple had been living there as they searched for a home to buy.It was a studio apartment located in West Hills, a community on the western edge of the San Fernando Valley, which backed up to where the Woolsey Fire was burning.“I could see the fire burning on the hill. I saw the smoke,” said Ben, who got an evacuation alert on his phone while at the gym.He went home to meet his wife, frantically packing up some important belongings.“We were not trying to check out of the place at all. Obviously things were a mess, clothes were everywhere. We were just trying to basically make sure we had everything we needed just in case everything burnt,” said Jessica.After they left, the Airbnb hosts contacted them to see if they could go inside the unit and turn off the lights. Ben said he agreed to let them in for that purpose.But once inside, owners Larry and Jeri Hannah said they were shocked by what they saw.“I don’t even know how they were living there,” said Larry. “We couldn’t believe the mess we saw.”In addition to the clothes scattered about, the Hannahs say the grout on the tile floor in the bathroom had been stained black. They said the walls needed painting and some of the flooring needed to be replaced.“When It became obvious that we weren’t going to let them come back then we just decided we were going to clean it up because we didn’t want to leave it like that,” said Larry.In order to do that, they removed all of the Wells’ belongings and told them the rest of their reservation had been canceled.The Wells said they agreed to pay through the end of November if they could keep their stuff there. But when Ben arrived on November 17, he said he was surprised to see their belongings strewn across the property.Expensive recording equipment had been left outside, he said. Other belongings had been thrown in trash bags. Some appeared to be missing.“At that point I was in shock, just completely shaken,” said Ben.He grabbed what he could find, not knowing that more of their belongings had been stored in a shed on the property.“Their stuff is all still here,” said Larry.In a statement, a spokesperson with Airbnb wrote, “We are urgently investigating this incident to better understand what happened. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 44-year-old pedestrian was hit by a car and seriously injured in Mission Valley Saturday, police said.The unidentified man was walking in a crosswalk at about 5 a.m. on 2300 Camino Del Rio North when a 57-year-old driver of a Ford Explorer traveling northbound on Qualcomm Way turned eastbound and the vehicle hit the pedestrian.The man walking in the crosswalk suffered a possible skull fracture, several facial fractures and internal injuries. His injuries are considered to be life-threatening, police said. 538

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 44-year-old man suffered a serious cut on his hand early Monday morning when he was attacked by a woman with a knife after parking his car in the City Heights area, police said.It happened shortly before 12:10 a.m. in the 4900 block of University Avenue, east of Euclid Avenue, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 44-year-old man had just parked his car on University Avenue when a woman in her 20s walked up to him and said he owed her some money, Buttle said.The woman then tried to stab him in the neck, but he raised his hand and she cut the webbing of his hand, slashing an artery, the officer said.The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injury, which was not believed to be life-threatening, Buttle said.The suspect was last seen walking southbound on 50th Street from University Avenue. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Former Congressman Darrell Issa is poised to end a political retirement that started only last year when he lost his seat in a Democratic wave that turned over seven Republican-held California districts. Issa scheduled a news conference for Thursday and will announce he's seeking the seat held by fellow Republican and longtime-U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, who is running for re-election while under indictment on corruption charges, said Larry Wilske, a retired Navy SEAL and Republican also running in Hunter's San Diego-area district.In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, Wilske said Issa told him he will run. Wilske plans to drop out and support Issa. Issa's entry will make the district near the U.S.-Mexico border one of the most closely watched races in the country.RELATED: Former Rep. Cities across the U.S. still may be trying to deck the halls, but a COVID-19 Christmas just looks and feels different.For people of faith, a season full of worship and togetherness will be missed."They do feel isolated," said GlenRoy Watson, a bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Watson’s congregation is made up of about 100 families."Normally at Christmas, we'd eat dinner and hang out and have a Christmas presentation," he said.This year, religious celebrations need to be held at home, but he had an idea."I'm just hoping that everyone will learn a little bit more about each one another and just continue to feel united," Watson said.He asked all families in his congregation to make a home video about their traditions or fond holiday memories to share with each other."It will be kind of like a mini movie," he said."For our Christmas tradition we read the story of Jesus Christ," congregation member Denise Cordero said as she sat with her young daughter by their Christmas tree and spoke to her iPhone camera.For church piano player VerLynn Brink, playing Christmas hymns for everyone at her church is what she will miss most."This is one of my favorite memories of Christmas," she said as she recorded a video on her phone while playing her piano.
