HAMILTON, Ohio — A man pocketed a puppy Saturday while perusing an Ohio pet store, packing the struggling little animal into the single oversized pocket of his hoodie and using his hands to keep it inside as he left.Propitiously for the pilfered pet and Preferred Puppies, the place from which it was plundered, he did so in full view of a security camera.Two days after the proprietor posted the recording to YouTube, the puppy’s new parent -- apparently unaware it had been stolen -- contacted the store and returned it. Grocery chain Kroger announced Tuesday that is plans to hire 1,000 people to administer coronavirus vaccines at the chain’s 2,200 pharmacies and 220 clinics.Kroger’s vaccine program launches this week in the state of Alaska as health care workers in Anchorage and Juneau will be vaccinated by Kroger staff. Kroger says that it is working with state and federal officials to vaccinate others in prioritized populations, such as health care workers, and those living and working in assisted living facilities.Kroger is not the only major company to assist in administering vaccines. CVS and Walgreens began administering vaccines to those living and working in assisted living facilities this week.“Kroger Health is a COVID-19 response leader that has provided our patients, associates and other businesses with diagnostic testing tools and supporting resources since the onset of this public health crisis,” said Colleen Lindholz, Kroger Health’s president. “Kroger Health’s experienced health care providers remain committed to helping our patients and associates live healthier lives. Historic numbers of background checks to purchase or possess a firearm were conducted in June.It's just the latest month with record-breaking numbers since the system was created in 1998.The FBI reported Wednesday that 3.9 million checks were done last month in what's a key barometer of gun sales.Officials have conducted 19 million background checks through the first six months of 2020 — according to The Associated Press, that's more than all of 2012 and each of the years before that.Gun sales typically surge during election years, given the fear that the next president could increase restrictions on the sales of firearms. But several crises in 2020 have fueled the sale of guns, including the coronavirus pandemic, an economic recession, protests over racial injustice and calls to reduce police funding.A group representing gunmakers says firearm purchases are a reasonable reaction to the political climate, while gun control advocates say they're concerned first-time buyers don't have enough training. 1023
