"There is a logical reason you may be hanging out with these people and not those."She suggested making plans for the future."Be apologetic but also state the reasons, the rationale, for why you don't feel safe yet, and if the person is not able to accept that feedback, then you did the best you could," Tomko said.Dr. Chad Rudnick, a pediatrician with Boca VIPediatrics, said an individual's own health has to come first."Right now, in the times of COVID, it's always OK to say, 'No,'" he said. "You never have to feel bad about declining a play date or an invite to go to someone's house or do anything with another family. A decision Thomas says may spill over into the fall semester.“I’ve got to do the best job I can for this college,”said Thomas. With staff and salary cuts already happening, the impacts of COVID-19 could last much longer.“When you talk to our students about their experience being here, they will often talk about the power of being in a place where black male excellence is an expectation,” Thomas said. “And that’s hard to communicate in a virtual experience."Morehouse’s 2020 valedictorian, however, was able to express the difficultly of this new reality in simple terms“I think my experience when COVID hit was, I describe it as a little disappointing,” said new graduate Golden Daka.Though Daka is disappointed, he says his class has turned this pandemic into a learning experience.“It let us know that life isn’t not guaranteed and the most precious moments that you cherish could easily be taken away from you,” he said. “So, a lot of people are approaching this as a form of adversity to get stronger an to get better in areas of weakness.”In addition to closing campus, Morehouse College has also canceled all fall sports, which they say is the first Division II HBCU in the country to make that decision.“It’s heartbreaking for me,” Thomas said.Despite the disappointment, Thomas says Morehouse is more focused on academics than athletics, adding that the key to reopening campus is finding a vaccine.“We’re going to have to do that before I think we can declare victory against the virus,” he said.Morehouse now has the chance to play a role in that victory. ATLANTA, Ga. – The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the United States could get the coronavirus pandemic under control in one to two months if all Americans wear face coverings in public spaces.CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield made the statement during an interview with the Journal of the American Medical Association, or JAMA, on Tuesday.“I think the data is clearly there that masking works,” Redfield told JAMA. “I think that if we can get everybody to wear a mask right now, I really do think that over the next four, six, eight weeks, we can bring this epidemic under control.”Redfield’s comments coincided with the release of two case studies that show how wearing face coverings can significantly reduce the transmission of the coronavirus.One of the studies, from JAMA, showed that a Boston hospital system reversed the infection trajectory among its employees and patients by adhering to universal masking policies.In the second study, the CDC highlighted how wearing a mask prevented the spread of infection from two hair stylists to their customers in Missouri.“Among 139 clients exposed to two symptomatic hair stylists with confirmed COVID-19 while both the stylists and the clients wore face masks, no symptomatic secondary cases were reported; among 67 clients tested for SARS-CoV-2, all test results were negative,” wrote the CDC. “Adherence to the community’s and company’s face-covering policy likely mitigated spread of SARS-CoV-2.”Experts say the virus that causes COVID-19 is thought to mainly spread from person to person, mainly through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.“These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs,” writes the CDC. “Spread is more likely when people are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).”In an editorial published by JAMA, the CDC affirmed that cloth face coverings are a critical tool to help stop this kind of spread.“We are not defenseless against COVID-19,” said Redfield. “Cloth face coverings are one of the most powerful weapons we have to slow and stop the spread of the virus – particularly when used universally within a community setting. BALTIMORE — Baltimore City Fire officials are investigating a Wednesday morning explosion at the BGE office building downtown.In total, 23 people were rescued from various parts of the building.Fire officials say 21 of them have been taken to the hospital. At least nine are in serious or critical condition.According to a statement, BGE said the 21 contractors were treated at area hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries.BGE said two individuals rescued were window washers who became trapped high atop a scaffold on the side of the building. Severe damage has been reported from the tenth floor of the building all the way up to the roof, which partially collapsed. 680
