SAN DIEGO - (KGTV) A San Diego biotech company is doing research that could lead to a vaccine against the coronavirus.Todd Nelson is the CEO of SGI-DNA in Sorrento Valley. His company invented the first automated gene printer. "We use that system actually to print genes. Genes are made of little building blocks that you've heard of, and we use that to rapidly, and in an automated fashion, print genes that researchers can use around the world for vaccine development. "RELATED: Miramar coronavirus evacuees start petition for quarantine oversightThe printer is called the BIO XP 3200. Roughly, 200 are in use around the world. "We're basically taking an entire laboratory of researchers that are doing various things, and we put it in a box," said Nelson.Researchers are using the printer to write the genes of the coronavirus."Even a nasty little thing like the coronavirus has its own genes, and there are certain genes that make that amenable to being a vaccine, and we know what those are so we put the information into the system, and we push a button and about 8 hours later that potential gene comes out ," said Nelson. RELATED: Mislabeled sample led to release of San Diego coronavirus patientNelson is confident the technology will lead to a vaccine. "We're partnering with pharmaceutical firms to develop that in a very, very rapid fashion in the next 7 to 10 days to develop a vaccine," said Nelson. The company used the same technology to help develop a vaccine for the Bird Flu in 2013. Dan Gibson is the company's chief technology officer and the inventor of the technology used in the gene printer.RELATED: First case of coronavirus confirmed in San Diego"That's really the power of synthetic DNA technology. You can keep up with the virus and write and build many vaccines to fight it and ultimately find a universal solution that puts an end to the coronavirus outbreak." 1900

SAN DIEGO — It's a nerve-racking place: on stage, behind the mic, looking out at a sea of people waiting for your punch line. The Comedy Palace in San Diego sees many comedians but not like the one who performed Friday night."It was something I thought about even in college but lacked the courage to do it," said Michael Schmid. "I always loved to make people laugh."Schmid always had the passion, but it was a recent visit to the doctor that gave him the courage he had been lacking."If not now, when?" Schmid said.Three years ago, he was diagnosed with primary lateral sclerosis, a condition similar to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS."It had spread to my upper body and becoming more quadriplegic," Schmid said. One month ago, he made the toughest decision of his life."The most difficult thing I ever had to do in my life was to talk to my children about ending my life," he said.Schmid says he will end his life on December 27, citing severe pain. He shared the date with one of his favorite comedians, along with a dream and a request for help."My initial response was 'We're going to make this happen,' " said Lisa Alvarado.Alvarado talked with some friends in the industry to see if they'd help make Schmid's dream of performing come true."I'm talking comics with Netflix specials, Comedy Central specials," Alvarado said.In one month, the group developed a 15-minute standup comedy routine for Schmid to deliver Friday night. Many of the professional comedians were in the audience as Schmid performed in his wheelchair with Alvarado holding his microphone. After the performance, Schmid's father made his way to the stage to give his son a hug."I never expected him to do that and show the world we're close," said Schmid.Schmid's ex-wife and his four children were also in the audience."No matter how crappy of a hand he's been dealt, he's taken it with a joke," said Schmid's son Joshua.Schmid is grateful he had a chance to laugh."I want my friends and family to have at least that memory when I'm gone," Schmid said. "Do not just give up where you're at ... always strive and reach for something else.""Even if it is the end of your life," he said, "you can be more than you are right now." 2256

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Governor Gavin Newsom Sunday directed certain businesses to close amid the spread of the coronavirus. In a news conference, Newsom said he directed all bars, nightclubs, wineries and brew pubs to close to help stop the spread of the virus. Newsom added that he is prioritizing those who are over 65 and individuals with chronic conditions. RELATED: What's the difference? The announcement was made during a White House press briefing in which President Donald Trump announced lower interest rates. San Diegans already pay some of the nation's highest gas taxes, and they're about to fork over even more at the pump.On Wednesday, the state will raise the per-gallon tax by 12 cents to 41.7 cents per gallon. That's on top of existing state and federal taxes drivers pay on regular gasoline. Gov. Jerry Brown and the state legislature approved the increase earlier this year to help fund state and local transportation projects. There's an interactive project map here. The new tax is supposed to generate about billion over the next 10 years. "For us just regular people, we don't have the extra money to pay for gas, especially with the commute," said La Mesa resident Anneke Crowder, who was filling up Monday. But there is one force at play that could lessen the hit from the increase. The day the tax goes up, Wednesday, is also the day that gas stations can start selling the less expensive winter blend.Marie Montgomery, a spokeswoman for the Auto Club, says that should cut the gas price about 6 cents, offsetting half the increase.Diesel drivers will be hit harder on Wednesday, when the per-gallon tax increases 20 cents, and the sales tax goes up to 13 percent. On Monday, the average gallon of regular gas cost .05 in San Diego, and Diesel .14.  1308

SAN BERNARDINO (KGTV) -- A man was seriously injured after falling 100 feet at Mount San Gorgonio Sunday afternoon.According to the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department, 34-year-old Anthony Casteneda was hiking with friends near High Creek Trail when he lost his footing and fell approximately 100 feet. After the fall, Casteneda was unable to hike out of the area due to serious injuries he sustained during the fall. Deputies say Casteneda’s friends were able to call for help. The department had to use a rescue helicopter to hoist Casteneda from the heavily-forested ice-covered slope. In a release, deputies say Casteneda’s rescue was the second of the day Sunday. 684
