CINCINNATI — Double majoring in neuroscience and organizational leadership is more than enough to fill the plates of most people.However, University of Cincinnati senior Megdelawit Habteselassie also finds time to serve as student body president and as a member of the UC alumni council.Students have elected other women as student body presidents before Habteselassie, who goes by her family's generational nickname of Sinna. However, she is the first African-American woman to hold the position in UC's 199-year history."I wish it happened sooner," said Habteselassie, 22, from her office in the Steger Student Life Center.The Ohio native's parents emigrated to the United States from Ethiopia more than 20 years ago. She initially planned to go into medicine but decided her passion was in social justice."I want to go into international law and perhaps work for the Gates Foundation, which does phenomenal things for sustainable development," said Habteselassie.However, for now, she is focused on her duties as student body president, which were plenty during the run-up to the university's homecoming earlier this month.She credits a strong network of women, including several mentors, for encouraging her to run."It's good to know that I am in this role because a lot of women helped me be here, and I would certainly say that if those kinds of conversations had happened sooner there probably would've been the first black woman president a lot earlier," she said.Habteselassie said studies show that women need to be asked several times before they will consider running for elected office. That was indeed the case for her, she said, but students greeted her candidacy warmly once she committed to running."It's amazing to see so many people ready for that change on our campus and to welcome me into this leadership role," Habteselassie said .Student body vice president Umaize Savani believes Habteselassie is giving a voice to those whose voices are not heard as loudly as others."To me, it shows that a change is coming to UC and to this country. I also think this reflects the changes that have taken place at UC over the last four years," Savani said.Habteselassie and Savani campaigned on a platform centered around holistic health and specifically destigmatizing issues surrounding mental health."We're working on doing a 'love yourself' campaign on campus and raising money for a mental health advocate award, and we have our co-directors of mental health awareness, who are really striving to expand what it means to be healthy," Habteselassie said.Debra Merchant, vice president of student affairs, said she believes Habteselassie is making the most of every moment."Her leadership opens 'thought doors' for everyone," Merchant said. "I'm a big believer in 'You can't be what you can't see.' Sinna's engagement with students, faculty and staff sends the important message throughout our UC community that leadership is open to all."Habteselassie has a knack for connecting with all types of students, Savani said."She knows how to speak to the student that is struggling while also being able to see eye to eye with a football player," Savani said. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Coronado bookstore that’s been a fixture of the landscape for nearly three decades will be able to move a few doors down thanks to a decision by the City Council. In 2018, a developer bought up nearly a whole block of Orange Avenue and Bay Books was only paying a fraction of market rent. Owner Angelica Muller told 10News in February that the store was considering a move down the block, but would have to sell coffee and pastries to stay in business. (KGTV) — Village Elementary is working to notify anyone who may have had contact with a staff member who tested positive for the coronavirus.In a letter to parents on Sunday, principal Heidi Bergener wrote that the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency confirmed that a staff member had contracted COVID-19 and that the county is in the process of investigating and monitoring the individual.Anyone who has come into contact with the staff member will be notified by the Coronado Unified School District nurse with instructions to self-quarantine, Bergener's letter said."Due to what we know at this time about how COVID-19 spreads, public health officials have indicated that all of us should consider ourselves as being potentially exposed," Bergener said in the letter.The name of the staff member was not provided due to privacy laws.Anyone with questions was asked to call the District Nurse at 619-972-8528. 950

Cloie Musumecci sent MTN News a brief video of a woman tripping and falling as a bison charged at her and another person in Yellowstone National Park.Cloie said in an email that the incident happened at Nez Perce Creek. She said the woman "is a Montana local so she knew to play dead in that situation."The woman was not injured and escaped "without a scratch," Cloie said. COVID-19 has boosted a number of essential and online businesses to the point where they need to hire hundreds of people. Now, some of these companies are getting creative with hiring during the pandemic."This is about actionality and giving everyone whatever ways that are necessary to them to be able to find work. Our teams have been trying to come up with creative ways to connect people and work," said Carl Schweihs, the president of PeopleManagement at TrueBlue, a national staffing company that helps businesses, big and small.Schweihs says their team decided to try out a drive-thru hiring event. TrueBlue is running the events through its Staff Management |SMX business."We did one of these in April in Pennsylvania, and we saw a lot of success, so we were able to hire about as many people in one day as we had done in a week in the past," said Schweihs.The company saw so much success that True Blue decided to offer the drive-thru service to other clients, as well."We saw a lot of people were interested in it. They weren’t used to necessarily video interviewing and there was a comfort factor in still being close to someone, still being able to ask questions, that just weren’t there on the video side," explained Schweihs.How it works is applicants fill out all of their information ahead of time online. Then, True Blue schedules certain times for people to drive up and interview through their car window. Schweihs says they're able to interview more candidates in less time."Another thing is, we do interviews on all of our jobs and I think it also shows, especially in warehousing and distribution jobs attendance is a big issue, so by people being able to show up to an interview at a scheduled time, it also gives comfort in us and our customers that they're going to show up and be in attendance when they actually do take the job," said Schweihs.Drive-thru hiring is gaining ground across the country. In California, the Tulare County Employment Connection is hosting its first drive-thru event to fill 40 electrical and solar installation positions."I'm a little bit old fashioned. I like the face-to-face, and I know a lot of people do. Just the safety matter of it right now during the pandemic, following safety guidelines, I think it's a very good idea to be able to drive through and make it quick, where there's not very much contact, but at the same time, you're having that face to face with employers," said Monica Andrade, a business resource specialist with Tulare County Employment Connection.Andrade says employers will also have an opportunity to have a more in-depth interview with some candidates by having the candidate pull over and conduct a socially distant interview outside in a separate area.
