SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With the pandemic prompting San Diegans to wear facial coverings, and practice physical distancing and stringent hand hygiene, flu season's start has been slowed.According to the county's Influenza Watch report published Oct. 21, San Diego County has reported 10 flu cases to date this season, compared to 320 cases at this time last year. Last year's season totaled 20,711 flu cases. The county says no influenza-related deaths have been reported so far this season. The CDC says the flu season in the U.S. typically occurs in the fall and winter, with the season peaking in December and February.County health officials say health precautions due to the coronavirus and an increase in the rate of residents receiving flu vaccinations have kept flu numbers low so far."Influenza activity has been very low so far this season in San Diego County. This may in part be due to the social distancing, hand washing, and mask wearing interventions instituted to reduce the transmission of SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Seasonal influenza vaccinations are being recorded in the San Diego Immunization Registry at a higher rate than at this same point in any previous season, with 637,696 San Diegans immunized through week 42," the county's report said.Week 42 covers case totals up to the week ending Oct. 17.According to the county, 70% of this year's flu cases cover Influenza A, while 30% include Influenza B. 1445

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Huey Lewis and The News fans disappointed by the band’s canceled concerts have a chance to enjoy its hit songs at a musical, Heart of Rock and Roll, set to debut at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre in September.Lewis, the band’s lead singer and namesake, announced Friday he was dealing with the sudden loss of his hearing."Two and a half months ago, just before a show in Dallas, I lost most my hearing," Lewis said in a message to his fans Friday. "Although I can still hear a little, one on one, and on the phone, I can't hear music enough to sing."Lewis went on to explain that doctors believe he has the inner ear disorder Meniere's disease and said he should not perform until he improves."Needless to say, I feel horrible about this, and wish to sincerely apologize to all the fans who've already bought tickets and were planning to come see us," Lewis added. "[I] hope that one day soon I'll be able to perform again."Fans will be able to hear the 80s rocker’s hits in Heart of Rock and Roll, which runs September 6 through October 21. The show will feature the band’s hit songs, including “The Power of Love”, “Hip to Be Square”, and “If This Is It”. Lewis made the announcement with the help of Jimmy Kimmel.“Huey’s talent has drawn a brilliant team of theatrical visionaries together, led by the witty and imaginative director Gordon Greenberg, and they’ve made a musical that’s about as great a night out as I can imagine. I can’t wait to share it with San Diego’s audiences,” said Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein.Anyone who already purchased tickets to the canceled concerts via credit card will receive an email with refund details. If you purchased your tickets via cash or check, you'll have to bring your original tickets to the point of purchase for a refund. 1852

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With growing freelance and telecommuting opportunities, more San Diegans are working from home. There are a few workflow goals to keep in mind as you step back from the office. Get dressed. This must-do is not an option for traditional office workers, who don’t have the luxury of typing reports in their pajamas. Putting on a new outfit for your day, even if it’s just jeans, can get you in the right frame of mind to start your day. Set work hours. It may be tempting to start late on days that you’re tired or busy. Maintain a distance between your work and personal lives by setting firm hours. Establish your space. If you don’t have a proper home office, this may be the time to invest in a quality chair and desk. By doing work away from the dining table, you’ll create emotional distance when it’s time to call it a day. You’ll also want to keep track of clients or contacts. There are multiple apps to help you no matter what your job or project. Schedule friends and family. Does your mother-in-law love to drop in? Give her a window of time when it’s acceptable to stop by. The same rule applies to children who will be home when you’re working. Ditch the kitchen. When it’s time for a break, don’t automatically reach for a snack. Keep water and coffee nearby so you’re not tempted to open the fridge.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: How to convince your employer to let you telecommute 1573

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A troubled spot in Lincoln Park is getting a new look. The community came together to clean up the site. The intersection of Euclid and Imperial Avenues was once known as the "Four Corners of Death" because of the high crime, gang activity, and homelessness. Now the area is getting some long-overdue attention."I remember when that area was bustling with businesses and commerce," says Brian Pollard, President of the Urban Collaborative Project.Since 2017, the Urban Collaborative Project has been working with community members, the city, and county to clean up the area and find help for those living on the streets.Brian Pollard says there has been an increase in affordable housing in the area, but resources like healthcare and food are still limited."We're putting more people in here but not increasing the services that are needed to support these affordable housing units. Food is a very big issue."The group's first significant project was bringing the Food 4 Less, located in Market Creek Plaza, to Southeast San Diego years ago. This part of town has virtually no major grocery stores."Until we start acknowledging that and pumping resources and shifting priorities, we will never catch up," says Pollard.UCP hopes to redevelop the Lincoln Park area, near Euclid and Imperial Avenues, to see it thrive as it did years ago, inviting businesses to invest in the process. The group is planning a community clean up in the coming weeks to beautify the area. 1491
