DEL MAR (CNS) - Hall of Fame Thoroughbred horse trainer Gary Jones died at his Del Mar home at the age of 76, it was announced today.Jones, whose career accomplishments included earning more than million in purses and 1,465 race victories, died Sunday following a lengthy illness. His son Marty, also a trainer, told the Thoroughbred Daily News that his father had been in hospice care and died of natural causes.The son of legendary trainer Farrell ``Wild Horse'' Jones took over his father's stable in 1974 and trained 104 stakes winners over the next 22 years.Jones won 15 race meet titles, including four at Santa Anita in Arcadia, where he set a record with 47 wins in 1976, ranks eighth all-time in Winter/Spring wins with 576 victories, and ninth all-time in stakes won with 72.Notable horses under his training include Turkoman, an Eclipse Award winner named Champion Older Male in 1986, and Best Pal, the winner of the first Pacific Classic at Del Mar in 1991, as well as the Hollywood Gold Cup and Santa Anita Handicap.Thoroughbred Daily News reported that heart problems led to Jones' retirement in 1996.He was elected to the United States Racing Hall of Fame in 2014. Their home sits on the corner of Lake Shore Drive and Moross Road. With thousands of LED lights and tons of spooky decorations, it has become an attraction!“It means more to people this year than in the past because it is a sign of normalcy,” Mark said.He puts up the lights and decorations himself. He’s in real estate and construction and rents equipment. Mark says it takes 80 hours to decorate about ,000 worth of props and lights.Every year, the Vane Sile couple would dress up and pass out full-size candy bars to 1,400 trick-or-treaters. But because of the pandemic, they are keeping safe and won’t be hosting trick-or-treaters.This year, people are welcome to walk up the driveway and check out all the spooky sights at a safe distance.“People are truly enthusiastic about it,” Mark said.It is not just Halloween, they go big on Independence Day and Christmas.Mark has so many decorations, he built his own storage room. DETROIT — "They strictly thought their so-called white privilege was gonna work this time and it didn't," said Marc Peeples who was acquitted in a directed verdict in a case where three women, who are white, accused Peeples, who is black, of stalking them.The women repeatedly called Detroit Police on Peeples, an urban farmer, who said he wanted to grow a garden in his old neighborhood in the area of 8 Mile and John R on the city's east side. In the beginning, Peeples said one of the women donated soil to his project, but then he and his attorney say it became about power, race and false allegations."These women were clearly lying," said Peeples who was shocked when Detroit Police arrested him after prosecutors charged him with three misdemeanor counts of stalking.This was a case of "gardening while black" said defense attorney Robert Burton-Harris, who represented Peeples at trial.Harris said this is similar to other cases around the country where "you have people calling the police on, mostly,?African-Americans for doing very mundane things.""I wasn't doing anything but planting a seed to help my community grow," said Peeples. 36th District Court Judge E. DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed an executive order granting convicted felons the right to vote, ending Iowa’s place as the only remaining state to broadly deny voting rights to felons.The Republican governor signed the order Wednesday after promising in June that she would take such action.Reynolds says she’ll continue to press the Legislature to pass a constitutional amendment restoring felon voting rights, which couldn't be reversed by a future governor. She proposed that last year but couldn’t get Republican state senators to support it.The executive order restores the right to vote for Iowans who have already completed their felony sentences. It requires residents to complete any prison, probation, parole, or special sentence.The order excludes automatic restoration for more serious crimes, such as murder, requiring those people to seek individual restoration but does not require repayment of victim restitution before they could vote."Today we take a significant step forward in acknowledging the importance of redemption, second chances and the need to address inequalities in our justice system,” said Reynolds. “The right to vote is the cornerstone of society and the free republic in which we live. When someone serves their sentence, they should have their right to vote restored automatically.
