SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Blood Bank is still dealing with a convalescent plasma shortage. The plasma can be used at local hospitals to help fight COVID-19, but donations from gay men could be turned away if they don’t meet certain requirements.The donation restrictions received national attention after talk show host Andy Cohen says he was turned away from donating the plasma for being gay.The local blood bank explained the restrictions to ABC 10News. The blood bank’s chief medical officer, Dr. Mark Edmunds, says the restrictions are in place by the FDA. He says the FDA actually eased some of the restrictions in April of this year, which was an update from a 2015 change. The FDA says the guidelines exist to protect the safety of the blood and plasma supply.In April, the FDA provided the updated guidelines to allow for a larger donor pool in response to the COVID- 19 pandemic. Before the guideline modifications, a gay man could only donate blood if he abstained from sex for a year. Now, the abstinence time frame is three months.Similar changes were made for people who recently received tattoos or piercings or for travel and residences deferrals related to malaria.Dr. Edmunds says there are studies happening right now to see if and how the donor pool can be expanded even further.The blood bank adopted the FDA’s new regulations on July 31st. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousand of San Diegans are saving big by "buying nothing."It's just past 9 a.m. on a late November in Bay Ho and dozens of breads, rolls, and muffins are ready for taking. Becky Sloan is the first to arrive. The food is set up outside the home of Tomira Baca-Craig, who runs a food co-op that divvies out extra bread donated by bakeries and stores. On this morning, she posted the giveaway on her "Buy Nothing" Facebook group.It's not just bread. Sloan showed 10News photos of baseballs, crafting items, shoes for her children and home decor, just some of the stuff she's received in the last two years. All of the items were offered up by neighbors on the Bay Park/Bay Ho Buy Nothing page."I think I might have saved anywhere from ,500 to ,000," said Sloan.MAKING IT IN SAN DIEGO: People converting vans to avoid high rentSloan actually gifts more items than she receives."It's awesome. After Halloween, she put all of the items back on the site. "It's all those things that add up and makes everybody's life a little easier. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Though the academic school year begins Monday, most UC San Diego students have a few more days before they have to log onto their online classes. But, that’s not the only changes students are dealing with this semester.Student Anthony Sanchez said nothing seems normal this semester. Going into his second year, he’s adapting to changes the university has made to try and prevent the spread of the coronavirus on campus.“I understand why they have to do it and I understand and agree with it. But from the student perspective, I’m 19, and it’s not really a fun thing to go through right now,” Sanchez said.Ninety percent of UC San Diego classes will be held virtually, and there will be many students like Sanchez that will be logging on from campus housing. He’s hoping this semester will go a lot smoother than last semester.Sanchez added, “This fall, I’m expecting it to be better in terms of how it’s structured. Because a lot of teachers were going on the fly and setting up lectures and scheduling as it was going. I’m expecting it to be more organized.”Sanchez told ABC 10News that the school was organized when it came to students moving into campus housing. There were about 7,500 students that returned to campus.The move-in days were spread out over 10 days to space people out. Each student could only bring two people to help them move.Each student was also given a coronavirus test, and Sanchez said he got his results within 48 hours.To help control the spread of COVID-19 on campus, the university also launched a voluntary program that utilizes smartphone technology to notify students if they may have been exposed.As for Sanchez, and what’s ahead for this fall quarter, he said he’ll just work on following the rules and saying positive to get through the year.“I guess I’m just going to have to make it the best that I can with what I can. It should be interesting,” Sanchez said.As far as testing, all students that live in on-campus housing and those that attend classes on campus are required to get tested for the coronavirus twice a month. 2092

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The San Diego Padres have acquired Mike Clevinger from the Cleveland Indians, who is considered by many baseball analysts as one of the top starting pitchers in the league.According to MLB Network’s Ken Rosenthal, the Padres acquired Clevinger, Greg Allen, and a player to be named later for a package that includes three major league players -- catcher Austin Hedges, pitcher Cal Quantrill and OF/1B Josh Naylor -- and minor league prospects pitcher Joey Cantillo, SS Gabriel Arias, IF Owen Miller.Clevinger, 29, is 1-1 on the season with a 3.18 earned run average.Allen, 27, is a switch-hitting outfielder who grew up in San Diego.
