SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mother of Rebecca Zahau testified Thursday in the second day of the civil lawsuit surrounding the Coronado mansion death.Rebecca Zahau died in July 2011. Her nude, bound body was found hanging from the balcony of the Spreckels mansion.The death was officially declared a suicide but Zahau's family disagreed. They filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit against Adam Shacknai, the brother of Zahau's boyfriend.Shacknai’s lawyers argue there is no physical, eyewitness, or scientific evidence linking him to Zahau’s death.Zahau's mother, Pari Zahau, took the witness stand Thursday morning and gave an emotional testimony as she was asked questions about her daughter.She remembered her as a sweet, loving and religious woman. The jury has three days off and will hear testimony again Monday.The family’s attorney Keith Greer handed Pari Zahau a piece of evidence and asked her to describe what it was.It was an envelope full of cash from Rebecca Zahau addressed to Pari Zahau and her late husband.Pari Zahau explained to the jury her daughter would support her financially by sending cash every month. That envelope was never sent, although one of the final times Pari Zahau talked to her daughter, she was told it would be on the way soon.Pari Zahau had to take a break from testifying when lawyer Keith Greer asked, “Did you ever think Rebecca would kill herself?”She gave a tearful response saying, “No. No, never. Never. My daughter? No. She is very sweet girl and she is very strong. No no, not suicide, they killed her.”After Pari Zahau broke down in tears, the lawyer asked for a brief break.The trial is expected to last a month. The Zahau’s family’s goal is to get the Sheriff’s Department to reopen a criminal investigation. 1802

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city of San Diego is making sure its homeless students have the right tools to succeed in school.One San Diego’s “We’ll have your back campaign” is distributing thousands of supplies to the San Diego School District’s less fortunate students.Officials estimate more than 6,000 students are homeless in the district.“A lot of these kids don’t get anything new and that’s why we make it is possible,” said Katherine Stuart-Faulconer, the wife of San Diego Mayor Kevin Falconer.One San Diego will have several more similar events and drives this year. 579

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Federal Reserve's decision to lower its key interest rate to near zero will help some San Diegans, but frustrate others.The Fed reduced its Federal Funds Rate to near zero for the first time since the Great Recession of 2008. The move, in reponse to the Coronavirus outbreak, will help keep auto loan rates low and mortgage rates near historic lows. It will also, however, lower earnings from interest bearing savings accounts. Greg McBride, chief financial analyst for Bankrate, predicted the economy to go into a recession, but said the low borrowing rates would help jump start spending once activity picks up again. "Coming out of that, one of the things that's going to give the economy a boost to recover from that will be these brutally low interest rates that entice consumers and businesses to resume borrowing and spending," McBride said. "Somebody concerned about losing their job is not going to go to go out and buy a car."Mortgage rates are already extremely low, with the average rate for a 30-year fixed is 3.36 percent. Still, that's above the all-time lows reached earlier this month, when the Federal Reserve made its first emergency cut. Mark Goldman, a loan officer for C2 Financial Corp., said there has been a rush to refinance since that earlier drop — a big reason why rates did not fall deeper."There's so much refinancing business going on right now that lenders can't stand a lot more business, so they price accordingly," Goldman said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of the man killed on India Street on this month has identified him as David Hill. The 38-year-old was a pathology resident at Balboa Naval Hospital. In the Navy since 2004, Hill had reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was an avid traveler, having visited dozens of countries. His mother, Carol Hill, said he had a goal of running a marathon on every continent. Hill had already checked off the hardest, Antarctica, though he had to get creative. “He did the 26 miles on the ship’s treadmill to fill that square!” said Hill's mother. RELATED: Pedestrian hit, killed near I-5 offrampA member of the San Diego Swim Masters team, he also swam in the Antarctic waters and was training for an island-to-island swim in the Galapagos next year. “He was a fanatic about being in shape,” said his brother, Matt. “Every morning he’d get up at 4 am and swim miles or he’d get up and run.” That’s what they believe he was doing the morning of Dec. 2. He had made it a few blocks from his apartment when he was struck by the driver of a minivan on India Street near Olive and Palm. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
