SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Unintentional fentanyl overdose deaths increased by nearly 70 percent in 2019, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner. From January through June of 2019, 69 people died from the overdoses, compared to 41 during the same time period in 2018. The number indicates a 68 percent jump, the report shows. And the illicit drug makers don’t have the kind of quality control measures that pharmaceutical companies have either,” Campman added.Until now, San Diego has been behind a national trend of increasing opioid deaths, but that’s changing, Chapman said. “This is how we are seeing the opioid epidemic here, mostly in the rise in fentanyl deaths.” 1847

The duo excelled in subjects around STEM and it all started from there."If we're good at physics or chemistry, it's not good enough to just be good at it, you have to make use of it and make an impact with it. Since we're still students the best way to do it was to help other students reach their potential as well," said Vivian.So the two got busy and in July, they rolled out Level Up Academy, a six-week online course with an in-depth stem curriculum. They even included presentations, slides and assignments."I reached out to underclassmen in various clubs who spread it to their friends, then spread it to parents' coworkers." By the time their program started, 30 students were signed up. The fee was a donation made to their page on Rady Children's Hospital's website, all for COVID-19 efforts."We thought this was a really transparent way to show students and parents that we were actually donating because before we thought about donating to other hospitals but it didn't have this public page. Parents and students would just have to trust us we were donating profits there."They raised over ,000 in donations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A new interactive facility is teaching students the importance of water in our environment. Doors to the "Hydro Station" opened Thursday morning in Chula Vista.School leaders say this is a new way to get kids excited about learning about jobs in the water industry. The Hydro Station will host learning exhibits and hands-on activities to introduce students to the ecological cycle of water, water conservation, water quality, and more. "Human beings need water," says Matt Tessier with the Chula Vista Elementary School District. "We need water to survive. That's one of the things that kids really understand."Four thousand five hundred kids will get the chance to experience the Hydro Station annually. Its located at the Sweetwater Authority's Groundwater Desalination Facility. The Hydro Station is made possible through a partnership between the Sweetwater Authority, Chula Vista Elementary School District and Otay Mesa Water District. There will be an official ribbon-cutting for the learning space this evening at 5 p.m. 1070
