About 30,000 doses of an experimental coronavirus treatment are shipping out Tuesday. It's Regeneron's antibody cocktail that got an emergency use authorization (EUA) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over the weekend. It’s also the same treatment President Donald Trump got last month.Patients who are diagnosed early with COVID-19 may be eligible. The goal is to keep them from getting sicker, so they don't have to go to the hospital. But the treatment still needs to be given through an IV.“The challenge is there has to be a place to administer it, so a place where you can have COVID patients in an infusion setting where they can be treated and monitored. This is not straight-forward,” said Dr. Helen Boucher, Chief of Geographic Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Tufts Medical Center.Any transfusion centers administering the IV will charge for those services.“The medicine itself is paid for by the government right now under the emergency use authorization. Those other charges have to be managed and they'll be managed by insurance, Medicare or Medicaid,” said Boucher. It's unclear if patients will need to request the treatment or if doctors will choose who to prescribe it to.In trying to get it to areas that need it most, the federal government will work with states on distribution. The problem is everywhere is seeing spikes right now.“We know that at least for 2020, the supply is going to be very low, so many of us in the infectious disease community and all the health care community are concerned that this resource will be allocated in an equitable way,” said Boucher. After this initial rollout, Regeneron says it expects to have 80,000 doses ready by the end of the month, 200,000 by the first week of January, and then 300,000 by the end of that month. 1796

According to the CDC, more than 30 states are reporting West Nile virus infections in people, birds or mosquitoes. Early symptoms of West Nile are similar to any virus or the common cold. These days, that means it's hard to differentiate from COVID-19.In Los Angeles, it's a big job to mitigate mosquitoes. The Greater LA County Vector Control District serves nearly 6 million people in 35 cities. So far this year, more than 230 mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile.“Every year, our mosquito season seems to get longer and longer and that goes into it being warmer and warmer,” said Anais Medina Diaz, the public information officer for the LA County Vector Control District. “Now we’re seeing mosquito season go from March to the end of October, sometimes into the beginning of November.”Officials say there have been two West Nile deaths and more than 30 human cases in Los Angeles County. They've gotten creative in order to reach people, to inform them of the threat in their own backyard. They've done a TikTok dance video and Diaz said, “We’re looking at trends on social media to see what catches people’s attention.”One TikTok video Diaz’s organization released was a parody to one of Lady Gaga’s famous songs. That Lady Gaga remake even has the mosquito taking the lead.“There was a toss a brush makeup on TikTok and we did a toss the sponge little video and that’s because the Aedes mosquito, most people don’t know, but they lay their eggs around containers and the best way to get rid of those eggs is by scrubbing out the container,” Diaz said.California has had more than 90 human cases, more than 270 dead birds, and 2,300 mosquitoes sampled in 2020."Mosquitoes don’t respect city lines or district lines or county lines so we need to really think of it beyond geographic boundaries,” said Dr. Aiman Halai, an epidemiologist for the LA County Department of Public Health.Public health officials say this is where it becomes a problem that affects everyone everywhere. Dr. Halai specializes in infectious and vector borne diseases like West Nile.“The symptoms range from mild illness to severe illness,” Dr. Halai said. “Most of the cases we get are severe because that’s when the person will go to the hospital and get tested.”When we asked how to differentiate symptoms of West Nile versus that of COVID-19, Dr. Halai said, “Early on, it could resemble COVID-19 as well its non-specific so fever, body ache, tiredness that could occur with West Nile as well as COVID-19.”But the real difference, Dr. Halai says, is when symptoms become serious.“COVID-19 is primarily a respiratory virus,” Dr. Halai said. “It affects the breathing system which causes cough, shortness of breath, and in severe illness, a lung infection or pneumonia which is then very different from severe illness caused by West Nile virus.”She says severe symptoms of West Nile involve confusion, blurry vision, drowsiness, and limb weakness, as it affects the nervous system. Mild cases of West Nile often go undiagnosed, meaning there are far more cases than we know of. West Nile is not contagious; you can only get it from mosquitoes, which is another huge difference when compared to the coronavirus. But those at risk are in the same category.“It’s our elderly, people with underlying medical problems, hypertension, diabetes, chronic heart and lung conditions those are the people we need to protect and they’re the ones that should be prioritizing preventive action for both these viruses,” Dr. Halai said. For the coronavirus, that means wear a mask and socially distance. For West Nile, that means removing all standing water anywhere on your property, checking your window screens, and wearing bug spray.“Unfortunately, this is our new reality we have to wear repellent and use one that has an active ingredient recommended by the CDC and EPA which is Deet, Picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus,” Diaz said.As with the coronavirus, officials urge people to do their part. It's a community effort and everyone's job to keep mosquitoes in check. 4055

A woman in Tallahassee, Florida is accused of drawing a gun on another shopper at a Publix grocery store last Sunday after the victim cut in line, the Tallahassee Democrat reported. According to a report of the incident by the Leon County Sheriff's Office obtained by the Tallahassee Democrat, Jessica Mock, 36, was about to check out at the Publix, but had forgotten an item. She left her cart in line to retrieve the item. When she returned, another customer had gotten in line in front of her. After Mock and the other female customer argued, the other woman got in another line. According to the report, the customer told Mock, "I'll meet you outside." Mock responded, "I'll see you outside."Once outside, Mock is accused of pulling a gun out of her waistband on the shopper. Later, the victim drove away and called law enforcement while Mock allegedly followed the woman. That is when police caught up to Mock. Mock denied pulling a gun or intentionally following the woman, but law enforcement did find a firearm. Mock was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, according to the report given to the Tallahassee Democrat.  1233

All across the small town of Octavia, Neb., about two hours north and west of Omaha, residents woke up Wednesday morning to find damage from softball-sized hail the night before.Jennifer Rose says the hail damaged her two vehicles."It started like just raining and you could hear the plunking of the hail," Rose said. "And it started started small, like ping pong-sized, and it kept getting bigger and bigger."Roofer Bryan Underwood says Octavia was pummeled with hail causing damage to roofs, vehicles and siding. The hail was so heavy, some stuck into the ground."I usually travel to the bigger stuff so i can try and help out as much as I can," Underwood said. "It's the beginning of the season. Everyone's like, 'Wow.' And we are, too."Paul Augustyn's turkeys were safe from the hail but their coop couldn't quite weather the storm. Neither could his Lexus."Mainly this car," he said, pointing to the Lexus. "My truck is a little beat up. It broke the back window out. Broke the windshield. Basically, it totaled the car."Many say they've already started the process to get estimates, wanting to get in before the roof and vehicle repair shops start booking up. 1173

Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller announced plans to reduce U.S. troop levels in Iraq and Afghanistan by mid-January. He says the decision fulfills President Donald Trump’s pledge to bring forces home when conditions were met that kept the U.S. and its allies safe, even though Republicans and U.S. allies warn against a rash withdrawal. The new plan will accelerate troop withdrawals from Iraq and Afghanistan in Trump’s final days in office, despite arguments from senior military officials in favor of a slower, more methodical pullout. Officials have issued a "warning order" to the Pentagon to indicate that it intends to reduce troop numbers to 2,500 troops in Afghanistan and 2,500 in Iraq by Jan. 15 — five days before Trump is slated to leave office. The decision comes just days after Trump installed a new slate of loyalists in top Pentagon positions who share his frustration with the wars. Trump fired Sec. of Defense Mark Esper earlier this month after sending a classified memo to the White House that asserted top military opinions that troop levels in the region should not be reduced. The expected plan means that President-elect Joe Biden would be leading the fourth administration to grapple with the still smoldering conflicts launched in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks. On Tuesday, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg says the military organization could pay a heavy price for leaving Afghanistan too early.Stoltenberg said that "no NATO ally wants to stay any longer than necessary. But at the same time, the price for leaving too soon or in an uncoordinated way could be very high."He says Afghanistan "risks becoming once again a platform for international terrorists to plan and organize attacks on our homelands." 1766
