PYONGYANG, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Premier Kim Yong Il met China's new ambassador, Liu Hongcai, here Tuesday.During the meeting which was also attended by Vice-Premier Ro Tu Chol at the Mansudae Assembly Hall, the DPRK officials said they highly appreciated the relationship between the DPRK and China.Kim warmly welcomed Liu, saying the DPRK and China held a series of activities last year to mark the two countries' year of friendship and the bilateral relationship had witnessed constant achievements in areas of politics, economy and culture, especially in the commercial sector, from the beginning of this year.Kim expressed thanks for the support of the Chinese party, government and people to the DPRK on socialistic construction, saying the DPRK people would never forget it and it was the unswerving stand of the DPRK's party and government to continue consolidating and developing the DPRK-China friendship.Liu said the activities held by China and the DPRK last year to mark the friendship served as a good opportunity for young people in the two countries to exchange views and develop friendship.He said he would make efforts to boost relations between the two countries and expand areas of mutually beneficial cooperation.Liu, who arrived in Pyongyang on March 5, presented his credentials on March 8 to Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly.

BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's yuan-denominated individual home mortgage lending rose 1.4 trillion yuan (204.98 billion U.S. dollars) in 2009, up 47.9 percent from the previous year, said a report issued by the People's Bank of China, the central bank, on Wednesday.The growth rate was 37.4 percentage points higher than the previous year, said the report on China's investment flow in 2009.Meanwhile, the yuan-denominated property development lending gained 576.4 billion yuan in 2009, up 30.7 percent year on year, and the growth rate was 20.4 percentage points more than the previous year, the report said.The total mid-term and long-term loans in foreign and domestic currency expanded 7.1 trillion yuan in 2009, up 43.5 percent from the previous year, and the growth rate was 23.4 percentage points more than the previous year.The short-term loans in foreign and domestic currency expanded 2.3 trillion yuan, up 758.5 billion yuan from the same period last year.Industrial mid-term and long-term loans in foreign and domestic currency added 1 trillion yuan among China's major financial institutions, up 26 percent from the previous year.Infrastructure mid-term and long-term loans in foreign and domestic currency expanded 2.5 trillion yuan, up 43 percent from the same period last year, according to the report.The central bank said on Jan. 15 that China's new yuan-denominated lending in 2009 hit a record 9.59 trillion yuan (1.4 trillion U.S. dollars), almost double that of the previous year.

YAOUNDE, March 23 (Xinhua) -- China and Cameroon said on Tuesday that they would make joint efforts to step up their parliamentary ties.The pledge came out of the hour-long talks between China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin and President of National Assembly of Cameroon Cavaye Djibril.Jia, the chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top advisory body, is on a three-day official visit to the central African nation.This is the first visit to the African continent by a senior Chinese leader this year.Jia said that exchange and cooperation between the CPPCC and National Assembly of Cameroon would help boost people-to-people relationship and state-to-state relationship."The CPPCC would like to increase personnel exchanges with the National Assembly of Cameroon and discuss how to run the state and promote livelihood," Jia said.Djibril said the National Assembly of Cameroon stands ready to work more closely with the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, and the CPPCC.On the broader China-Cameroon relationship, Jia said the two countries have withstood the test of time and vicissitudes in the international arena since they established the diplomatic ties in 1971."The two countries have reaped new harvests in recent years," Jia said, referring to bilateral cooperation in trade and economy, science and technology, education, among others.China appreciated Cameroon's adherence to the one-China policy and support to the most populous country on issues concerning China's core interests, Jia said.Jia reaffirmed that China would work with Cameroon and other African countries to implement eight new measures announced last year by Premier Wen Jiabao, including debt cancellation, agriculture production, infrastructure, education.As China and Cameroon will mark the 40th anniversary of the diplomatic ties, Jia called on the both sides to take the opportunity to boost exchanges at all levels and hold celebrations to uplift the relationship.Echoing Jia's proposal, Djibril said his country would like to cooperate with China to advance relationship and generate benefit for their peoples.Following the talks, Jia also delivered a key-note speech on China-African relationship.Jia will meet with President of Cameroon Paul Biya on Wednesday.Cameroon is the first leg of Jia's ten-day African tour which will also take him to Namibia and South Africa.

HAIKOU, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's southern island province of Hainan saw a surge in travelers on Saturday, one day before the Chinese Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, said local officials.A total of 65,397 people arrived in Hainan, a tourist resort, on Saturday, up 30.16 percent from the eve of the Chinese lunar new year of 2009, according to a spokesman with the local holiday and travel coordination bureau.A survey of 10 scenic spots in Hainan showed they received about 41,750 visitors on Saturday and their total ticket income hit 2.07 million yuan (303,000 U.S.dollars), up 7.32 percent and 12.37 percent respectively from the eve of the last Spring Festival, the spokesman said.Another survey of Hainan's 21 hotels showed they accommodated 6,101 travelers on Saturday, and reported an income of 5.04 million yuan, up 26.21 percent, he said.From Feb. 1 to Feb. 13, more than 3,800 foreign travelers arrived in Hainan for a holiday, according to statistics from the Haikou General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection."I am very happy to spend Spring Festival in such a beautiful island. BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- China was flexing its muscles to fight corruption which was still an "persistent, complicated and arduous" task, said an expert as the internal anti-graft body of the Communist Party of China (CPC) convened its three-day plenary session.     President Hu Jintao told the meeting of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) that the Party should "fully recognize the situation of the fight against corruption," which was "persistent, complicated and arduous."     Last year, at least 15 ministerial or provincial level officials, including heads of State-owned enterprises (SOE), were investigated for corruption, nine of whom were referred for prosecution, the CCDI said.     Among them were former Supreme People's Court Vice President Huang Songyou, who was the first supreme court justice in China removed for grave violations of the law and the Party discipline.     "The graft fight and the promotion of a clean and honest work among Party cadres has a great bearing on the Party's survival," Prof. Huang Zongliang of Beijing University told Xinhua.     Huang said despite the arrests of many high-ranking officials, the graft situation did not "show any sign of relaxation," citing the 2009 corruption index of the Transparency International, a Berlin-based non-government organization.     Among the annual ranking of the world's countries and regions of 180, China ranked 72nd. Countries and regions towards the end of the list means more corrupt.     Huang said China's ranking was low and there was little progress compared with that of previous years.     ASSET REPORTING SYSTEM IN THE PIPELINE     He said to build a system of officials' asset reporting was an effective way to prevent corruption.     The communique of the last CCDI plenary session in September said officials should "report their properties and investment as well as employment of their spouse and children," and authorities should enhance management of officials who had family members living overseas.     Such requirement was in response to several cases of corrupt officials who fled the country with huge amount of public funds.     Huang said the public applauded the move to set up an officials' assets declaration system, as it signaled the Party's effort in pushing for transparency.     Currently, the program has been tested in several regions, including eastern Zhejiang and Shanghai and far western Xinjiang.     At the CCDI's plenary session Tuesday, Hu, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said supervision and monitoring should be enhanced to form an effective corruption prevention system.     Vice Minister of Supervision Qu Wanxiang also pledged last week to tighten supervision on the SOEs and fight corruption among their executives.     At least 35 senior executives of China's large SOEs faced corruption charges last year, said a report by Faren Magazine, affiliated to the Legal Daily and overseen by the Ministry of Justice.     Among them was Kang Rixin, general manager of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), who has been under investigation for alleged grave violations of Party discipline since August.     Another prominent case involved Chen Tonghai, former chairman of China's state-run oil refiner Sinopec, who was found to have taken almost 200 million yuan (29.4 million U.S. dollars) in bribes and given a death sentence with a two-year reprieve in July.     Latest statistics show more than 106,000 officials in China were penalized for disciplinary violations from January to November last year.     President Hu vowed that no corrupt official would be above the law and Party discipline.
