Kate Brown says “dozens of people” are missing from the large wildfires that have burned across the state.Brown made the announcement at a news briefing Friday afternoon, and said the reports of missing people come from blazes in southern Oregon near Medford and the northern part of the state near the state capital of Salem.At least four wildfire deaths of have been reported in Oregon.Hundreds of firefighters, aided by helicopters dropping fire retardant and water, battled two large wildfires Friday that threatened to merge near the most populated part of Oregon, including the suburbs of Portland.The number of people ordered to evacuate statewide because of fires rose to an estimated 500,000 — more than 10% of the state’s 4.2 million people, the Oregon Office of Emergency Management reported late Thursday.The Oregon Convention Center in Portland was among the buildings being transformed into shelters for evacuees. Portland, shrouded in smoke from the fires, on Friday had the worst air quality of the world’s major cities, according to IQAir.Gov. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A health executive and the mayor of Poway were clinging to narrow leads Wednesday in their bids to claim open seats on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, while an incumbent was on the verge of being voted out.District 1 board members Greg Cox and District 2's Dianne Jacob are both termed out, meaning the board will have at least two new members.Cox, a Republican, has been in office since 1995, representing the district that includes National City, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and Coronado, along with 19 communities within the city of San Diego, including Barrio Logan and Sunset Cliffs. It also features the unincorporated communities of Bonita, East Otay Mesa, Lincoln Acres and Sunnyside.Nora Vargas, a health executive, expanded on an early lead in the race to replace him, securing 54.6% of the vote to 45.4% for state Sen. Ben Hueso.Both Vargas and Hueso are Democrats.Hueso, a former San Diego City Council member, has represented Senate District 40 since 2013.Vargas is a vice president of Planned Parenthood of the Southwest and also serves on the Southwest Community College board.The District 2 race, meanwhile, had Poway Mayor Steve Vaus with a narrow 50.6% to 49.4% lead over fellow Republican and former state lawmaker Joel Anderson.The termed-out Jacob, also a Republican, joined the Board of Supervisors in 1993. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 30-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a fire hydrant in a neighborhood north of Scripps Ranch, police said Thursday.The crash was reported around 4:20 p.m. on Stonebridge Parkway near Stockwood Cove, off Pomerado Road in the Rancho Encantada neighborhood, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The victim was riding his 2019 Indian Scout motorcycle between 80-100 mph eastbound on Stonebridge Parkway when he lost control at a curve in the road, jumped the curb and slammed into a fire hydrant, Buttle said.The rider was ejected onto the roadway and pronounced dead at the scene, he said. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A Utah family that ordered free coronavirus masks through a state program say they were sent politically-charged face coverings featuring a handgun and a controversial slogan.Christine Passey-Spencer of Rose Park says she ordered the masks through a sate program, "A Mask for Every Utahn." Since April, the campaign has used federal COVID-19 money to purchase more than 2 million masks from local and international manufacturers to limit the spread of the virus."I was just shocked," Passey-Spencer said.The two masks feature an American flag with a handgun printed across the front. The face coverings also feature the slogan "Don't Tread on Me," written below a coiled rattlesnake."I think the thing that bothered me most is that I knew my tax dollars paid for this, and this is very politically-charged speech," Passey-Spencer said.The Gadsden Flag — the inspiration for the snake and "Don't Tread on Me" slogan — was first used in the Revolutionary War. But in recent years, the image has been co-opted by the Tea Party, anti-gun control activists and white supremacists. In 2016, it was deemed to have "racially-tinged" messaging in some contexts by the federal government. More recently, the image has been used by people believing COVID-19 health restrictions take away their constitutional rights."We hope this is an isolated incident; that we just missed these couple of masks," said Ben Hart, who oversees Utah's mask program for the Governor's Office of Economic Development.Hart admits about 100 of the "Don't Tread on Me" masks were included in a shipment last month. Hart says the staff deemed them "inappropriate" and attempted to set all of them aside."We will not be using taxpayer dollars to pay for these masks.
