As the debate about mask mandates continues in some states, a new study reportedly shows social distancing is just as important to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The study looked at the effectiveness of face coverings when someone coughs repeatedly, coughing is one of the symptoms of COVID-19.The study was published in a June issue of “Physics of Fluid”, by AIP Publishing, and was conducted by Talib Dbouk and Dimitris Drikakis from the University of Nicosia in Cyprus.The researchers used computer modeling to show the range of saliva droplets when people cough. Previous work from this group showed saliva can travel about 18 feet when a person coughs and is not wearing a mask or covering their mouth.This new study built on that research to add in the variables of face coverings and repeated coughing. As the coronavirus pandemic continues, doctors are learning more about the damage having Covid-19 can do to the body. Two separate studies published recently indicate the coronavirus can harm other organs in the body, including the heart.One of the studies looked at 100 patients in Germany who recently recovered from Covid-19 and found 60 percent of participants had inflammation in the heart. The study used MRI scans to monitor the inflammation, and was published in JAMA Cardiology.The majority of the patients in this study, 67 of them, recovered from the coronavirus at home with severity ranging from asymptomatic to moderate. It compared the MRIs of coronavirus survivors to scans from healthy volunteers.The data showed there was some sort of heart involvement in those who had coronavirus, whether or not they had preexisting conditions or any heart-related symptoms during recovery.“Our findings reveal that significant cardiac involvement occurs independently of the severity of original presentation and persists beyond the period of acute presentation, with no significant trend toward reduction of imaging or serological findings during the recovery period. Our findings may provide an indication of potentially considerable burden of inflammatory disease in large and growing parts of the population and urgently require confirmation in a larger cohort,” the researchers noted in conclusion.A second study, also published in JAMA Cardiology, found coronavirus could be found in the heart tissue of patients who died.The study looked at data from 39 autopsy cases in Germany in early April. The patients were aged 78 to 89, had tested positive for Covid-19 and there were results of heart tissue analysis in their autopsies.In 16 of the 39 cases, there was a large “virus load” of coronavirus found in the heart tissue, another eight had a coronavirus presence in the tissue.The sample of autopsy cases was small and the "elderly age of the patients might have influenced the results," the researchers wrote. More research is needed whether similar findings would emerge among a younger group of patients."Taken together the studies support that SARS-CoV-2 does not have to cause clinical myocarditis in order to find the virus in large numbers and the inflammatory response in myocardial tissue. AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Faculty and staff at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan are being trained to fight active shooters in a unique way – by using hockey pucks. University police are conducting the training sessions, which were organized by the OU Union and the American Association of University Professors, to improve classroom safety for all. The use of hockey pucks allows those vulnerable to an active shooter attack to fight back with something heavy that will also cause a distraction, according to OU Police Chief Mark Gordon. "Hockey pucks provide the ability to be carried in briefcases or backpacks, are not considered a weapon and will meet the goal of distracting the shooter,” Gordon said. The OU Union has distributed hockey pucks to 800 of its members and will distribute an additional 1,700 pucks to students. "Part of the strategy for fighting is you need to create a distraction to give yourself time as a group in a classroom to rush the gunman so you can get your hands on the gun and take it away from the shooter," Gordon said.Although police and organizers find the pucks to be a good solution to the threat of a mass shooting, some students on campus disagree."I found it, at first, absurd," said Adam Kalajian, a third-year student at OU. "What good will it do? I mean, there’s an armed person coming in, why would you chuck a puck at them? What’s it going to do? Nothing." Jacob Gora, a fifth-year senior, echoed the same sentiment. "If I was to give you a puck and I had a gun, would I be able to take you out easily?" Gora asked. "I mean, a puck isn’t going to distract me or stop me from shooting someone."According to a release, the pucks also serve a second purpose. As millions of Americans have been without work amid the pandemic, nearly 12 million people will lose unemployment benefits on December 26, according to the Century Foundation.The Century Foundation estimates that 7.3 million Americans will exhaust benefits from the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program. The federal program extended unemployment benefits for millions of Americans who otherwise would not have received state unemployment benefits.According to the Century Foundation, 4.6 million Americans will lose benefits through the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program on December 26. This fund extended state unemployment benefits for an additional 13 weeks. The 4.6 million Americans is in addition to the 3.5 million workers who will have lost PEUC benefits by then.“Congress has stared down major expirations of jobless benefits multiple times during the Great Recession and previous economic cycles,” the Century Foundation said. “Policy makers have been more comfortable with enacting temporary extended benefits programs with more predictable costs rather than improving the automatic stabilizers in (extended benefits) EB."While millions of Americans are set to lose benefits, there remains ongoing debate on Capitol Hill to provide some form of economic stimulus.
