An effort by Microsoft and Linkedin to get people back to work has now reached more than 10 million job seekers in 231 countries and territories. Their goal? To give free digital skills to 25 million people.Representatives from Microsoft and Linkedin admit it was, and still is, an ambitious initiative to reach that many people and to target the digital space and help get people the skills they need to work in our new and changed world.“It has really been a challenging time for so many people and there are things people can do to upscale we all really need to learn new skills everyday” says Naria Santa Lucia, general manager of digital inclusion at Microsoft Philanthropies.Part of her job is to help people get a job. She says the program has reached people all over the world, and all over the nation.“We’ve seen a great uptick from states like California, Texas, NY, Florida, Illinois, Virginia, Washington DC- but every single state has had a learner,” Santa Lucia said.Santa Lucia highlights people who quit their job hoping for more opportunity, right before the shutdown. The learning path on LinkedIn offers interview help, critical skills, and collaboration tools.Santa Lucia recalled someone who left their job before the pandemic who was able to find work.“He decided it was time to try something new,” Santa Lucia said. “He came upon the content and was able to supplement the technical background with the customer service skills to enhance his resume and become more attractive to employers and has landed a temporary position and is really looking forward to parlaying that into full time employment after the role concludes."Guy Berger is the principal economist at LinkedIn.“I’m pretty optimistic we’ll find our way out of this pandemic and even if we don’t, we’ll find ways of working around it more and more jobs will be online friendly or social distancing friendly,” Berger said.Berger and his team just finished the workforce report for October. They tracked labor trends, who's been hired, where people are working, and where they're moving, Berger said.“These reports in the late spring were pretty glum, hiring in the United States was down something like 40% compared to where it was a year ago. That’s huge,” Berger said. “We’ve never seen that big of a drop in our data in the last few years. But the good news: if you look at these reports… they’re improved we’re in a much better place.”The report shows that places like Austin, Texas, and Charlotte, North Carolina, are gaining the most people. While the restaurant industry and travel and tourism are still down, there's been growth in areas like wellness and fitness.Santa Lucia says, the initiative identified the top 10 in demand jobs, like software development, sales representative, customer service specialist and project management.“Life gets in the way,” Santa Lucia said. “All of us, we’re trying to juggle helping our kids running schools in the other room, we’re thinking about other struggles and worried about the pandemic and exposures in the health arena as well. One of the great things is you can start it and put it down as you need to which is what I had to do as life got a little busy and you can go back to it as well”She says another popular course is on diversity inclusion."There’s also really thinking about race equity, how can we reach individuals who are Black and African American, and, in this moment, provide the opportunity for them to become reskilled and upskilled as well" says Santa Lucia, who also recommends making a plan for yourself, keeping record, taking advantage of conferences which are now virtual and often free.Once you get your completion certificate, it's one more thing you can add to your profile to help you stand out amongst the crowds who are looking for work. 3812

An Idaho junior high school teacher is under investigation after he fed a puppy to a snapping turtle in front of students.Robert Crosland has taught science at Preston Junior High School for years. In a news release, Preston School District 201 Superintendent Marc Gee says his administration became aware of “a regrettable circumstance involving some of the biological specimens” on March 7.“The event occurred well after students had been dismissed and was not a part of any school-directed program,” Gee said in a news release. “We emphasize that at no time was the safety of students or staff compromised.”It’s unclear if the dog was alive or dead when Crosland fed it to the turtle. Administrators began investigating the incident immediately, according to Gee, and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office was contacted. Crosland has not been cited or charged and has not been placed on leave, Gee said.“A part of any investigation includes determining the best course of action once the facts of the matter have been ascertained. This is not a situation that is easy, nor do we feel it is a measure that can be taken lightly,” Gee said.Crosland is a popular teacher who has exotic snakes and other animals in tanks around his classroom, according to multiple parents and students who contacted EastIdahoNews.com. Three former students, who asked not to be named, said they recall Crosland feeding guinea pigs to snakes and snapping turtles during classroom demonstrations.“He is a cool teacher who really brought science to life,” a former student says. “I loved his class because he had turtles and snakes and other cool things.”Gee says the district is taking steps to ensure “this type of action could not be repeated” and asked for patience while the investigation commences.“While the district certainly does not condone individual actions that may violate district policy or reasonable expectations of behavior, we hope that any errors in judgment made by a teacher in this instance will not cause us to forget the years of care, effort and passion the teacher has given to students in Preston School District,” Gee says.EastIdahoNews.com has contacted Crosland for comment but did not receive a response.The-CNN-Wire 2234

As families along the Gulf Coast deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Laura, people in Iowa are still without power after a derecho with winds of up to 140 miles per hour hit parts of the state on August 10.The term derecho was derived in the state to characterize a line of fast-moving thunderstorms that can produce hurricane-force straight-line winds.“It’s just a mess,” said Steve Becker who farms 800 acres of corn and soybean crops just west of Cedar Rapids. The storm began in the western part of the state and roared to the east, damaging between 10 million and 14 million acres of farmland in the state. In Cedar Rapids, apartment buildings sit without rooves and cars lay totaled. The city was the hardest hit in the state as the National Weather Service measured wind speeds equivalent to that of a Category 4 hurricane. As you drive into Cedar Rapids, however, you see the most widespread damage as once tall-standing corn now bends at 45-degree angles or is completely flattened.“We had a good crop coming. We really did,” said Becker. “I mean, the biggest worry of everybody out there is how we get through this stuff. What are we going to do?”Shortly after the storm passed through, President Donald Trump surveyed the damage. Iowa’s Farm Bureau estimates around 6 million acres, or 40% of Iowa’s corn crops alone, were damaged. It has asked the governor to make a billion request for disaster assistance from the federal government.“This will have a dramatic emotional effect on a lot of producers, a lot of farmers,” said Craig Hill, president of Iowa’s Farm Bureau. Many farmers work on credit. They can spend millions of dollars on equipment such as grain bins, combines, and tractors, to name only a few. They then can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on supplies for that year’s harvest, all relying on the money they earn to help pay off the debt and set themselves up for success the following year. Some corn is salvageable, but it will not weigh the same or produce the same quality, meaning farmers might make back a quarter of what they expected.Iowa accounts for around 20% of the nation’s corn supply. Considering its importance to livestock, meat and ethanol, the market effects could be far-reaching.“It’s going to be very difficult for us to get the work done on a timely basis and then the frustration of everything being slowed,” said Hill of the impending harvest set to begin at the end of September.“It’s just the way it is. Nothing you can do,” added Becker. 2508

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A municipal government in China has donated 40,000 medical-grade face masks to Maryland’s capital city amid the coronavirus pandemic. The donations from Changsha, China, were first offered to Annapolis city officials in April, when the need for the masks among public safety workers was high in the beginning of the pandemic, Annapolis City Manager David Jarrell said in a news release Tuesday. They arrived this month, with one of the boxes featuring strikers of American and Chinese flags with a message that read: “Go, City of Annapolis! Best Wishes from Changsha! True unity inspires people to work as one to overcome adversity,” The Capital Gazette reported.Another note from Yani Xia, a representative in the Chinese city’s Foreign Affairs Office, accompanied the shipments. “We sincerely wish you and everyone in Annapolis continued good health, and the fortitude to persevere during this challenging period,” Xia’s note read.Annapolis’ relationship with Changsha began under a former city administrator, according to the release. The two municipalities are now sister cities. 1106

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- One-tenth of Disneyland employees have recently experienced homelessness while two-thirds of the park’s employees can’t afford three meals a day, according to a union-funded report.Disney officials slammed the report saying it’s politically motivated and that the document is skewed to reflect the position of unions. The report argues that 74 percent of workers at the park can’t pay for basic expenses each month. The report also claims that 85 percent of park employees are paid less than per hour.VIDEO: Disneyland animatronic loses head, scares riders"As Disneyland profits and prices hit record highs, Disneyland employees are falling farther behind," said Peter Dreier, a policy professor at Occidental and one of the report's authors."Disneyland wages aren't keeping up with rising rents in Southern California. Our survey found that homelessness and housing instability are so widespread that they have become a normal part of employees' lives at the park. Similarly, we found it's normal for Disneyland workers to skip meals in order to make ends meet."The report was based on a survey of 5,000 Disneyland employees. Disneyland has roughly 30,000 employees.RELATED: Disneyland raises price on tickets, annual passesDisney responded to the report with a statement of their own."This inaccurate and unscientific survey was paid for by politically motivated labor unions and its results are deliberately distorted and do not reflect how the overwhelming majority of our 30,000 cast members feel about the company," Disney spokeswoman Suzi Brown said. "While we recognize that socio-economic challenges exist for many people living in Southern California, we take pride in our employment experience," she said.Disney also said a majority of the park’s employees make more than minimum wage while entry-level positions range between and .75 per hour.UPDATE (March 2, 2018): Disney officials say the average salary for full-time, hourly employees at the park is ,000. 2016
