(KGTV) - Poway's city council is expected to vote Tuesday night to move forward toward demolition of the Big Stone Lodge, which could pave the way for its consideration as a site for a long-sought affordable housing complex for veterans in the city.The property on Old Pomerado Road is one of the most historic sites in Poway, dating back to an old lodge used as a stopover on the stagecoach route into San Diego. Later, it became the location for popular restaurants, a dance hall, and a notoriously rowdy honky tonk. When the homes were built along the current Pomerado Road, residents complained of noise from the Big Stone Lodge, leading to its closure. It's been abandoned for decades and the city bought the land in 2003."It's pretty shocking as far as how dilapidated it is," Poway City Councilmember Caylin Frank told 10News. "We know that we've had vandals. We've had people breaking in to do who knows what. So at this point it's really become a health and safety risk for the city."There seems to be general agreement that the building will need to be torn down. However, there's a battle brewing over what to do with the land. In 2018, the city transferred the property to the Poway Housing Authority, which has designated it for affordable housing. Housing advocates have been trying for years to build an affordable housing complex for veterans. A plan was developed for an empty lot on Twin Peaks Road, but after an uproar by nearby residents, the council voted against the plan 3-2. Supporters of that project have pitched the Big Stone Lodge site as a replacement. Frank says Poway will need to pick sites for more housing, but wants to study multiple options, including the Big Stone Lodge.A group of Poway residents oppose putting housing at the Big Stone Lodge, citing the site's historic nature and concerns over increased traffic in the area. "Anywhere but here," said Mary Shepardson, Vice-President of the Poway Historical Society. "This is not suited for building on." Shepardson and others are urging the council to turn the land into a passive park, preserving what parts of the Big Stone Lodge can be saved, including native plants and trees.Frank says she expects the city to move forward with demolishing the structures on the site. (AP) — A 9-year-old girl who lost her collection of baseball cards when a wildfire destroyed her family’s central California home received a huge surprise when firefighters presented thousands of new, donated cards and put her on the phone with her favorite player. Reese Osterburg didn’t get a chance to save her 200-card collection when the Creek Fire forced her family to evacuate. When local authorities heard about her loss, they put out a call for baseball card donations. A collector in San Jose donated more than 25,000 baseball cards, which were presented to Reese on Friday. PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — A couple believes they got bed bugs from shopping at Port Charlotte Town Center.Matthew Nystrom said he noticed bed bugs in his bedroom Sunday. Just one day after his wife bought new jeans for him at one of the mall's department stores.He said he didn’t know where the bugs came from at first, but he said they noticed the bugs the same day he decided to wear his new jeans. Then he found a bed bug gnawing at his leg.“Pulling it out of my leg was like…I better not tell my wife or she’s gonna freak out,” Nystrom said. Then he decided to tell his wife Hillary Nystrom.She said she read comments from other people on social media complaining about bed bugs at the mall. That's when she decided to check the other pair of brand new pants that they hadn’t taken out of the bag yet.“I pulled the one pair that were in there out and I just unfolded it. And there was one sitting right there,” she said, referring to a bed bug.She said she saw it in the shopping bag after they had the house exterminated by Ace Pest Management. Pest specialist Randy Wells shared a few tips on how to get rid of them as soon as possible.“Pretty much anything that you can throw in a dryer that you think has bed bugs or the like, just put it in at high heat on a cycle and that’ll kill the bedbugs. And again call a pest professional for a thorough inspection,” he said.Wells added people can also rid their homes of the bugs by avoiding taking affected items or even moving from room to room.Several other customers have complained on Facebook about finding bed bugs in clothing after shopping at Port Charlotte Town Center, too. One said a friend was bitten on her foot after wearing new shoes from a shoe store.
