One-term Rep. Joe Cunningham, D-SC, might not be leaving the US House the way he wanted to, but he certainly was going to make the best out of his November election defeat.Giving a farewell speech on the floor of the House on Thursday, Cunningham pulled out a can of beer from his jacket and opened it. Cunningham was toasting bipartisanship during his address on the floor."For the betterment of this country, we have to come together. We have to sit down and listen to each other and maybe even have a beer. The spirit of the bipartisanship and cooperation. I raised this glass to my colleagues, both Democrats and Republicans,” Cunningham said.It’s unclear if Cunningham actually finished the beer. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi requires House members to keep their masks on while in the chamber.Cunningham lost re-election last month in a tight race against Republican Nancy Mace. Not many people like being caught speeding and getting ticketed, but one person's solution to not getting caught might lead to even more trouble. The Metropolitan D.C. Police released video earlier this week of a suspect getting out of a car and smashing a camera designed to catch and ticket speeders. The video shows the suspect knocking over the machine, kicking it a few times and throwing the camera into a ditch before getting back into a car and speeding off. WJLA-TV reported that this incident caught on video was one of six incidents that took place in DC last week. As of Tuesday, no arrests have been made in connection to these incidents.  685

Nostalgia lovers can kindly rewind to a time when Blockbuster Video reigned supreme.On Tuesday, the once defunct Blockbuster Video Twitter account came out of a six-year hibernation to announce that the last remaining Blockbuster in Oregon can be rented through Airbnb. The store will be split into three units, with each one selling for per night, but the catch is it’s only open to residents of Deschutes County, Oregon, where the final Blockbuster Video remains.Blockbuster will provide snacks, soft drinks and pizza with the units. The units will also have access to a huge collection of Blockbuster’s stock.The units are available for up to four people, but can only be rented for one night per family.Following three nights of stays, the Oregon Blockbuster will allow visitors to see the units during regular business hours for a limited time.The Bend, Oregon, Blockbuster became the final location open of the mega video rental chain in 2018 after a pair of Alaska locations closed. Officials broke ground on a new national memorial in Washington, D.C. Thursday to honor the millions of Americans who served in World War I, 100 years after the United States got involved in the conflict.The memorial will be built in Pershing Park, a small plaza about a block away from the White House.More than 100,000 Americans died in the war and more than 200,000 others were injured. Now, nearly 100 later, there are no living survivors from World War I."It's a national tragedy that the millions of veterans of the Great War have not been memorialized in our capitol,” said Terry Hamby, commissioner of the United States World War I Centennial Commission."There was so much sacrifice in World War I, it's time for America to build a memorial to the forgotten war." Hamby’s grandfather fought in the war. His uncle died in it.“It means a lot to me, personally, because when you have a memorial and you can go stand in front of it, the emotion burst forth,” Hamby said.In Washington, D.C., other American wars are honored with a national memorial, including World War II, as well as the wars in Korea and Vietnam.The Centennial Commission was established by Congress in 2013 and authorized to create a new national-level memorial in the nation's capital, to honor the men and women who served.Denise Rohan, National Commander of the American Legion, expressed support for the memorial and the veterans it will honor.“Their legacy is one of freedom and heroism. Some paid the ultimate price. The American Legion supports this overdue memorial because the world must forever remember the story of those men and women who liberated a continent. Sadly, it was not the war to end all wars. But, by studying their legacy, tyrants should be on notice that America will not allow evil to go unchallenged,” Rohan said.The goal is to build the memorial by Veterans Day of 2018, which would mark the 100th anniversary of the agreement that brought an end to the war.While this will become the first national monument to World War I in Washington, D.C., there is a National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, dedicated to honoring those who served in the war. 2218
