CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Several Chula Vista elementary schools are working to give students hands-on engineering experience the district says they can take into the job market. On August 1, 2016, a new type of learning burst into being with the start of the Innovation and Energy Station in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. The station helps teach students STEM. The station serves sixth grade students as well as serving as a community lab. In 2018, the lab grew again to include the Energy Station at Saburo Muraoka Elementary School. In August of this year, the program grew yet again to include the Hydro Station, which teaches students about the water industry. The lab begins by helping students identify which careers align with their interests while highlighting jobs in San Diego’s priority sectors. “It was designed to give students the opportunity to learn about their own strengths," Michael Bruder, District engineering teacher told 10News. “The students’ eyes light up when they see the lab space. You get the ‘Wow’ effect. You literally hear the students say ‘Wow!’ as they enter,” Bruder continued. At the Energy Station, students use Minecraft to create an energy efficient home and/or landscape. Students exploring other themes could be testing wind turbines or building circuits. The program also offers students a connection with local employers, giving them the chance to connect their hands-on experience and the region’s in-demand skills. Qualcomm, Microsoft, SDG&E, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the National Electrical Contractors Association all partner with the program. “I want employers to realize that career education must start before high school,” says Matthew Tessier, assistant superintendent of innovation and instruction at CVESD. “We’d love to partner with more people and expand to every single priority sector.”Click here to learn more about the program. 1950

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) – A Chula Vista family came home to their house completely ransacked by burglars.“It was a total mess,” homeowner Eric Deas said. “It was like a hurricane came into my house.”Deas says he left for his aunt's house around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. When he got back around 3 p.m. he found that someone had tried to get into his backdoor, then smashed a window to get in.The thieves stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and electronics. But they also raided his fridge, drank his alcohol, and ate his food. They trashed his house, dousing his floors and furniture with booze.  Deas even found feces in the upstairs bathroom. "They didn't flush," he said.He also found a shoe in his aquarium.  About ten of his prized fish were dead.  He thinks the thieves dumped wine in the fish tank.“It looked like they had a good time,” he said.  “They had a party in my house. Unfortunately, it was a 'damage party.'”A neighbor’s security camera caught a white BMW park in the neighborhood. Then it appears of group of teens got out of the car and started walking towards Deas' house. The video was taken in the same time frame of the break-in. It was hard to make out faces or a license plate, but Deas thinks its video of the party bandits. The intruders also took something very sentimental from him.“My mom wrote me these handwritten notes. She passed away two years ago,” Deas said, “Things that sad, 'love you, ma.' It was personal.”Deas doesn't think he will get them back.“I call them punks; they don’t deserve to be people. I want them to know they picked the wrong house,” Deas said.  “(They) will be caught. (They) will be found.” 1724

The victim was taken to Scripps Hospital in Chula Vista, where he was pronounced dead.Chula Vista police reviewed surveillance footage from the gas station, which showed the victim sitting on a curb asking customers for money at the gas station. The suspect, later identified as 64-year-old Carl Keele, walked up and was confronted by the victim, according to police. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista police are now investigating multiple fires that broke out in over the span of a few days in the early hours of the morning.Captain Linda D’Orsi, Public Information Officer for the Chula Vista Fire Department, said they started early in the morning Sept. 17 and most have been fences and vegetation that burned. That Thursday morning, crews responded to multiple fires that started in the span of about half an hour, starting on Lake Crest Dr. & Wueste Rd, moving to 1120 Eastlake Parkway, then Telegraph Canyon Rd and Buena Vista Way and finally E. J St and Paseo Ladera.Just about two days later, crews then responded to a fire at the playground at Veteran’s Park. Karina Lodin lives across the street. She said she woke up to see the flames, then she called 911 and her husband took a video of the blaze.“For a second there, with everything that’s going on in California with all the wildfires, and you see this big fire outside your house, you start panicking like is my house going to catch up on fire,” said Lodin. She was disheartened to see the play structure flattened because it was a spot her son loved to play.Just one day after that, another fire nearby on Martin Place, also in the early hours of the morning.“As of this latest one, we have now requested our PD liaison because there seems to be a trend and we want to get to the bottom of this,” said Captain D’Orsi.Captain D’Orsi said they have not found anything left behind at each scene and have not found any witnesses with information on people in the area.“No obvious evidence left at the scene, no matches no flares,” she said. She added that anyone with information is asked to call the Chula Vista Police Department non emergency line at 619-691-5151.“We just want the community to be aware and be willing to provide information if they have any,” said Captain D’Orsi. 1894
