(KGTV) -- Dozens of sailors are set to return to North Island Sunday morning following a months-long deployment.Six helicopters and 40 to 50 pilots, aircrew and maintainers from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 6 will arrive at the Naval Air Station North Island after a six-month deployment.The squadron is part of the San Diego-based Third Fleet and supports aircraft carrier operations with the Fifth Fleet in the Persian Gulf and Seventh Fleet in Japan.Also returning this week in the USS Theodore Roosevelt which will arrive Monday.The aircraft carrier departed in October and made port calls in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Singapore and the Philippines.   696

COVID-19 is currently the leading cause of death in the United States, according to research from the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).According to JAMA's research, daily deaths due to COVID-19 in the U.S. increased from 826 to 2,430 between Nov. 1 and Dec. 13. The 2,430 deaths linked to the virus now outpace heart disease (an average of 1,700 deaths a day) and cancer (1,600 deaths per day) — typically the two leading causes of death in the country.Between March and October, COVID-19 ranked as the third-leading cause of death in the U.S., trailing only heart disease and cancer. However, the spread of the virus has been largely unchecked in recent months, as colder winter months have moved gatherings indoors, where the virus is more likely to spread.COVID-19 was also the nation's leading cause of death in the springtime, when JAMA reports that about 2,900 people were dying each day from the virus."The failure of the public and its leaders to take adequate steps to prevent viral transmission has made the nation more vulnerable, allowing COVID-19 to become the leading cause of death in the United States, particularly among those aged 35 years or older," the Journal stated in its report. "Much of this escalation was preventable, as is true for many deaths to come."JAMA's study was published a day after the Journal reported that COVID-19 has appeared to be much more deadly to young people than initially thought. Between March and July, more than 76,000 people aged between 25 to 44 died in the U.S. — about 12,000 more than in a typical year. JAMA attributed the excess mortality among young people to the virus and added that COVID-19 deaths in the age group outpaced unintentional opioid deaths in some regions."In fact, July appears to have been the deadliest month among this age group in modern American history. Cleveland police have released surveillance footage of a gangland-style drive-by shooting from February in which small children were nearly gunned down in the crossfire.The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. at a convenience store located in Cleveland, on Feb. 19.According to the footage, there was a gunfight in the parking lot. Two parked SUVs in front of the store were targeted in the drive-by. Camera footage of the shooting shows three cars pull into the parking lot and the occupants inside open fire on the two vehicles. (KGTV)— More than three business owners in Coronado have been hit by criminals using fake 0 bills to make small purchases.Sam Frederick’s shop, Little Sam’s Island and Beach Fun on Coronado Island has all things fun. But last Saturday, fun was not on his mind, after somebody took advantage of his new employee.A man tried to buy three towels with a 0 bill. But at the last minute, he changed his mind to buy just one.“He realized that my guy was going to cash the 0 bill, so he puts two towels back, and he got more money that way,” Frederick said. MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodThe clerk took the bill, gave the man in change, and left. When Frederick checked the cash register that night, he said something was not right. “I knew right there… The Ben Franklin wasn’t in shape at all,” he said. Coronado police say he is not alone. Investigators are looking into at least three more counterfeit 0 bill incidents in the last week. Joshua Jordan owns Treasures from the Heart, next door. He too was hit. But the incident happened not once, but twice. “He saw that it was an easy mark, went to the next store, came back again, and bought a little more to look better,” Jordan said. He did not use the change he got from the first transaction but paid with another fake 0 bill with the same serial number. The bill was immediately rejected by the bank the next day.“I know maybe to some companies, 0 is not much. But to me it really hurts,” Jordan said. As Coronado Police continues their investigation, they are also encouraging business owners to check each bill with a pen and a black light machine, ask for ID, or call them if they are suspicious. “Right now we are working in cooperation with the secret service to see if this is an isolated incident in Coronado, or part of a larger trend in San Diego as a whole,” Det.
