While many have people lost their jobs over the past few months, for some people, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a scenario that made it easier for them to find work. Lashaunda Garner is one of those people.“In my situation I was out of work for 16 years,” said Garner.After nearly two decades, Garner found a work-from-home job at the start of the pandemic.“As soon as I got the job, I was like ‘oh my gosh, I can do something past my disability,’” she added.Garner suffers from severe PTSD and anxiety, which makes it difficult to work in a traditional work environment.“In my case, there are certain sounds, certain smells and things that trigger your depression and when I am at home, I can limit those things,” said Garner.While work-from-home options were previously limited. During forced business closures and stay at home orders, the U.S. saw a surge in work-from-home jobs, especially call center positions.“The pandemic struck, and all of the call centers had to send their agents home. This was worldwide. This was something that never happened before,” said Alan Hubbard. “Some of the agents that were sent home in India, the Philippines and China didn’t have the physical infrastructure in order to do those jobs.”Hubbard is with the National Telecommuting Institute (NTI), which helps people with disabilities work from home. In Garner’s case, it had already helped her setup a home office and everything needed to work from home when the surge happened.“You hear people say, ‘you aren’t your job’ right, but for a lot of people, that is how they identify themselves,” said Hubbard. “That they are working, that they are productive. That is the opportunity that we try to provide.”Garner is just one example out of many people with disabilities who have been able to find work-from-home jobs and thrive in that environment over the past few months.Since the beginning of the pandemic, NTI has had a significant increase in companies come to them for help finding workers. They have four times as many available jobs to fill and have actually been able to place nearly 200 people in work-from-home jobs in the last six weeks. When, typically, it places about 50 people a month.“That is what the pandemic has done. It has opened up this opportunity for these folks,” said Hubbard.Hubbard is currently working with a dozen companies looking to hire another 240 people.Lashaunda is thriving in her current role and hoping her story inspires not just other people with disabilities, but the millions looking for work right now.“Do the best you can and fight for what you want,” said Garner. “It may take you, hopefully not 16 years, but you will end up getting it.” 2681

(AP) — An Ohio gamer upset about a .50 bet while playing Call of Duty: WWII online was sentenced Friday to 15 months in prison for recruiting a prankster to make a bogus emergency call that resulted in the fatal shooting of a Kansas man by police.Casey Viner, 19, of North College Hill, Ohio, also is restricted from gaming activity for two years while he is on supervised release after serving his prison term, U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren said in announcing the sentence.Viner repeatedly gulped and appeared crestfallen as the judge announced his sentencing decision. He glanced into the courtroom gallery where his parents were seated. His tearful mother got up and left the courtroom. His father, an Ohio law enforcement officer, put his head into his hands.Viner pleaded guilty in April to felony charges of conspiracy and obstruction of justice in the hope that he would not be sentenced to prison. Viner admitted trying to hide his involvement in the 2017 incident when he realized the antic had gotten someone killed.In a brief courtroom statement, Viner told the judge he is "awfully sorry" for what happened: "I never intended for anything to happen. I think of it every day."Prosecutors and defense lawyers in their plea agreement had recommended a sentence of two years on probation, with the added condition that Viner be confined for six months to his home unless attending school, work or church. They also jointly recommended the gaming restriction.But Melgren said a prison sentence was required to reflect the seriousness of the offense and give the public a sense the criminal justice system is working. It was foreseeable that something bad could happen by calling an armed police force to respond to what police believed was an escalating situation of violence, he said."We impose sentences not only for what people intend, but what happened," Melgren said.The death of 28-year-old Andrew Finch in Wichita, Kansas, drew national attention to "swatting," a form of retaliation in which someone reports a false emergency to get authorities, particularly a SWAT team, to descend on an address.Viner himself had been swatted just 20 days earlier to the Kansas incident, his defense attorney Jack Morrison, Jr. told the court. He said Viner is remorseful, noting and he lost about 20 pounds in recent months "on reflection of the gravity of what occurred as a result of what he believed to be a harmless prank."Authorities said Viner recruited Tyler R. Barriss to "swat" an opponent, then 19-year-old Shane Gaskill, in Wichita. But the address they used was old, leading police to Finch, who was not involved in the dispute or video game.Gaskill, who had previously given his old Wichita address to Viner, was charged as a co-conspirator after knowingly giving Barriss the same former address and taunting him to "try something."Barriss, a then 25-year-old Los Angeles man with an online reputation for "swatting," called police from Los Angeles on Dec. 28, 2017, to falsely report a shooting and kidnapping at that Wichita address. Finch was shot by police when he opened the door to see what was happening outside.Viner had just turned 18 about two weeks before the deadly swatting incident, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Debra Barnett argued probation would give him a better grasp of what he has done and would be a first step in helping him to grow up."At his age and his youthfulness, I am not sure he is going to get it if he is sitting in a cell block with people who are more hardened, more experienced than he is," she said.The federal indictment alleged that a forensic examination of Viner's iPhone recovered his deleted outgoing messages to unknown persons, including one in which Viner allegedly wrote: "I was involved in someone's death."Finch's family has sued the city of Wichita and the officers involved. Police have said the officer who shot Finch thought he was reaching for a gun because he moved a hand toward his waistband. The local district attorney declined to charge the officer.Gaskill has struck a deal for deferred prosecution that could allow the charges against him to be dropped.U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said outside the courthouse that a distinguishing factor in the government's handling of the prosecutions of the two gamers is that none of this would have happened if Viner had not reached out to Barriss and started the whole process.Barriss was sentenced in March to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to 51 counts for making fake emergency calls and threats around the country, including the deadly hoax call in Kansas. On one hand, firms should be engaging with their customers online. On the other, they should be wary of jumping into a controversy too quickly, he advised.Sometimes when companies tweet "they are acting from the seat of the pants, as opposed to taking a moment to analyze and examine the dimensions of the event or issue," Schenkler explained.By responding too quickly on social media, companies may end up exacerbating controversies that may fizzle out on their own, he said.Brayden King, a professor of Management and Organizations at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management, said Twitter can be an easy way for brands to get messages to a large audience. "Twitter reaches a lot of people very quickly," he said, while "a press release can be ignored by the very people you want to see it."But companies do face a risk when they use social media platforms to disseminate a position. "If you don't think through the media strategy carefully, you can expose yourself to criticism from other people -- including people you see as potential customers," King said.Schenkler added that brands may sometimes forget how public their Twitter interactions are."What [brands] might consider to be business conversations are just out there, and people forget that," he said. "And they pay the price sometimes."To protect themselves, Schenkler said, companies may want to enact a social media process or protocol that prioritizes the brand's ultimate objectives -- and keep it in mind when responding to a controversy.  4534

  

With millions of Americans getting tested for COVID-19 every single day, some are struggling with long waits for results.But now, researchers say there’s a much easier and faster way to test for the virus, and its right under your nose.“You scratch it, smell it, and then you have a choice of these different windows and you pick which one,” said Derek Toomre, Ph.D., a professor at Yale University School of Medicine.Toomre is part of U-Smell-It, a team that created a scratch-and-sniff app to help determine if someone has COVID-19 all through the sense of smell.“It's going to see how good your sense of smell is and if you do really well, you’ll pass,” Toomre said. “And if you don’t, it will say, ‘hey, you got something up.’”Despite being less accurate than a COVID-19 diagnostic test, this product is much faster and less costly. With results available in less than a minute and the cards costing 50 cents a pop, scientists say this smell app could outperform traditional tests at a fraction of the price.“We’re all familiar with the idea of testing people for fever as a way of finding people who have COVID,” said Roy Parker, Ph.D. a biochemistry professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder. “But that hasn’t worked very well.”Parker says with only about 20% of people with COVID-19 getting a fever, compared to 80% of people with COVID-19 reporting a loss a smell, a smell test is a much better indicator of COVID-19 infection than a temperature check.“It would make a big difference because you would identify people who have COVID, but they have such mild symptoms that they don’t know it and they’re out walking around potentially infecting other people and their family,” Park said.While commercially available, U-Smell-It is now looking for emergency FDA approval with the goal of getting their scratch-and-sniff cards into people’s hands and under their noses as quick as possible.“I can see people saying, ‘hey, this is not serious,’ and that’s fine, don’t take it serious,” Toomre said. “Let’s just try to do it and see if it works. And if you can’t smell that test and it’s saying, ‘hey, there’s something up’ well, you know, you should isolate and check out.” 2192
