SAN DIEGO — Medical workers from all over San Diego made their way into SDCCU Stadium Wednesday to pick up free Personal Protective Equipment for their small and medium sized practices.The workers got free hand sanitizer, N95 masks, surgical masks, gloves and gowns. "It's really hard to find in stores, online, it's all out, everywhere," said Juana Vasquez, medical assistant at La Mesa Family Medical Groups, who was picking up supplies.Volunteers from the San Diego County Medical Society, UCSD Medical School and the Mira Mesa High School football team handed drivers boxes of the gear in the stadium's parking lot. Medical organizations of 50 or fewer are eligible, and more than 500 of them registered for the event. Dr. Holly Yang, a hospice and palliative care specialist at Scripps and president of the San Diego County Medical Society, said larger hospital systems have been able to source the necessary PPE for its staff. For smaller operations, however, it has been a challenge."Everyone wants to take care of patients," Yang said. "We should not in this country have to be afraid for ourselves and our families. We should have the right equipment. SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Searchers are combing a section of the San Bernardino Mountains for signs of a missing off-duty firefighter. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department says the search Saturday is focusing on an area of Highway 18 where Carlos Baltazar’s car was located by the California Highway Patrol on Sept. 20. Baltazar is a member of a U.S. Forest Service Interagency Hotshot Crew. He was reported missing by family members on Sept. 24. At the time, he was off duty and not in the area of the El Dorado Fire in the San Bernardino National Forest. Another hotshot, Charles Morton, died while fighting that fire on Sept. 17. 654

SAN DIEGO — When the pandemic hit, hundreds of people living in San Diego's bridge shelters moved into the convention center, where they could spread out. More than six months later, they're still there. And it's the site of a Coronavirus outbreak.This month, 115 people living in the convention center tested positive for the the virus, and have moved to county-supplied hotel rooms for isolation.The remainder of the roughly 800 residents continue to live on site, now a one-stop shop of services including meals, laundry and finding permanent housing.Bob McElroy's Alpha Project is one of the city contractors serving the shelter.“It saved hundreds of people's lives, we couldn't have operated in the close proximity that we were in with the bridge shelters and Golden Hall and other facilities so it saved lives and I can't put a cost on that,” McElroy said.But the cost is now coming under scrutiny.From April through December, the city budgeted million to the convention center shelter, though most of that is via federal and state funds dedicated to COVID or homelessness. SAN DIEGO -- Video taken Tuesday shows people climbing on top of the border fence near Friendship Park near the Pacific Coast US/Mexico border as the migrant caravan approaches.According to a Border Patrol spokesperson, agents are keeping watch on the U.S. side of the park, but aren’t aware of anyone climbing all the way over onto the U.S. side of the beach.Border Patrol says it’s technically not legal for people to sit on the fence because it’s on U.S. soil, but no arrests are being made at this time.It’s unclear whether or not the group is with the migrant caravan.The incident comes as U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the closure of several northbound border lanes in San Ysidro and Otay Mesa.The closures are expected to cause delays. 765
