EL CAJON, Calif., (KGTV)-- San Diego Gas and Electric (SDGE) unveiled their new line of firefighting tools Wednesday afternoon, including a helicopter and a new tactical command vehicle. A little spark can transform into a violent rage. That is the fear and reality of a wildfire. "Californians were devastated and had the most destructive and deadliest wildfire season last year," SDGE Chief Operating Officer, Caroline Winn said. In 2018, there were 8,000 fires in the state that scorched more than one million acres. While no one can predict mother nature, SDGE says they are more prepared than ever. Meet Bruce Pulgencio's newest ride, the UH-60 Blackhawk. The aircraft is SDGE's newest member of their fire fighting arsenal. It can reach up to 140 mph, carry 860 gallons of water, and fills up in only 45 seconds. "It will dip the bucket into the water and pull out then we will go to the fire and be able to release the water to the fire," pilot Bruce Pulgencio said. "We just keep rotating to dip site to drop site."The copter and the pilot share a similar story. The aircraft came from the Army Surplus. Pulgencio just retired from the Army National Guard. After their military careers, the two joined together to fight fires from the sky."it's like driving a smaller sports car and then driving a semi-truck," Pulgencio said. The semi-truck he is referring to is SDGE's premiere firefighting helicopter, the Erickson Aircrane. Its 2,650-gallon tank has been assisting San Diego fire agencies for a decade."It can get into smaller places," Pulgencio said about the new Blackhawk. "We all have our specialties, where they have their snorkels, and we have our bucket. It's just a different way to approach the water and to fight the fire."Since its debut in June, the Blackhawk has already proven its value. It flew over last week's Caliente fire in Otay Mesa. Surrounded by terrain that ground crews had a difficult time accessing, the brand new UH-60 Blackhawk dropped thousands of gallons of water atop the pallet yard. Also joining the team this season is the new SDGE Tactical command vehicle. The mobile electrical hub is a place where scientists can gather and send the latest weather mapping information to ground crews on the fire line."It allows our teams to deploy quickly, and we can establish full internet and satellite phone capabilities in any location," Winn said. On the ground and in the air, the community can rest assured that their firefighting arsenal is stronger than ever. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - An El Cajon police officer's encounter with a group spray-painting graffiti ended in remarkable fashion early Wednesday morning.Sgt. Mike Murphy was on patrol around 2 a.m. when he got a radio call reporting people in dark clothing tagging along Heart Drive."Saw three males with dark clothing. Hit them with a spotlight and told them to have a seat, which they all did," said Sgt. Murphy.Two other patrol officers were called to the scene. The three men in their late 20s had spray paint under their nails, with fresh paint on the sidewalk and the wall of a business. Sgt. Murphy decided to take a closer look."I saw messages, not of hate, but of peace and love ... the peace sign and 'BLM.' Just had a discussion. 'You're not trying to say anything mean or hateful. Why did you choose a wall?' I understand the frustration of everything going on. Talked about, if this happened to their house, would they be upset? They apologized, and all agreed the avenue they chose was a wrong one. And they came up with, 'What if we fix this?' I said, 'I'd like to help you with that,'" said Sgt. Murphy.Sgt. Murphy, who says he had enough to make an arrest, decided to let them go and asked them meet at the same location that same evening, where he would help them clean up."Having them arrested, how is that going to help the message they're trying to put out? The vandalism would still be on the wall," said Murphy.At 7 p.m. Wednesday, the three men showed up with paint and rollers. Together with Sgt. Murphy, they painted over the graffiti."These men were true to their word. What better way to show not just how the department treats its citizens, but how the citizens treat our city. We all make mistakes, and sometimes we have to be given the opportunity to come back from a mistake," said Sgt. Murphy.The three men have decided to they will create a plywood art installation. Sgt. El Cajon Police continue to search for a wanted suspect while an officer recovers from being dragged down a road by a car. The suspect has been identified as 41-year-old David Pangilinan of Guam. A journalist in Guam said as soon as the news hit on the island that Pangilinan was wanted, everyone instantly recognized the suspect.Related: El Cajon police ID suspect who dragged officer with car“His picture was there and I recognized him right away. He’s a school mate of mine back in elementary and middle school,” said Troy Torres. “Mr. Pangilinan’s family is very well known, a very nice family that has built up businesses a lot over the years, has contributed a lot to the community so his name does stand out,” he said, saying most people on the small island have heard of the family so this news has sparked attention across the island.A press release from El Cajon police said Pangilinan is the suspect in a case that started when an officer stopped to check on an SUV parked illegally and blocking traffic on Washington Avenue in El Cajon. He found a sleeping man and woman inside the car that was later determined to be a rental.The male driver of the car first tried to give false identification then started to put it into gear, so the officer tried to stop him. The officer got trapped in the car and was dragged down the road, then hit by another car. The SUV drove away and was deserted nearby, with the man and woman nowhere to be found. They are still on the loose and El Cajon police are asking for the public to report any information on their whereabouts.The officer is in critical condition as of Monday.A police officer in Guam said they’re on high alert and would know if he tried to return to the island because everyone who lands at the airport in Guam is required to go to a mandatory quarantine facility for six days. (KGTV) - A pair of Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets from an El Cajon high school are turning heads for their achievements.It has been 19 years since a student from Grossmont High School was appointed to military service academy and the class of 2018 has two who received multiple appointments.John Flaherty and Nicholas Ghosn earned four appointments in total.Flaherty was nominated to West Point and the United States Merchant Marine Academy while Ghosn earned them to the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy.“I was on top of the world,” said Flaherty describing the moment he got the call he was being appointed, “it was everything I dreamed of since I was four-years-old.”Flaherty is attending West Point and Ghosn will head to Annapolis at the end of their summer.Nicholas Ghosn says it was bittersweet to get the nod from the U.S. Navy.“All I ever wanted was to go to that college and join the ranks of the officer corps in the Navy, but I knew I was going to be away from my family and friends and home,” said Ghosn, “it’s going to be a long time before I get to see them so I was kind of sad because I knew this was it.”The 17-year-olds grew up a mile and a half from each other in Spring Valley and played sports together.“It’s unprecedented,” said Gunnery Master Sgt. Mark Brosnan on the two earning nearly million dollars in scholarship money from the schools.“I’ve never had cadets from public school get two appointments in the same year,” added Brosnan.They are teenagers, but they know they are on the precipice of something great.“They don’t let you into the Naval Academy or West Point if you eat tide pods,” laughed Ghosn, “Thats on the application.”The two head to their respective schools in late June, but plan to see each other at the Army-Navy game in December. 1855
