SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The ACLU is threatening to sue ICE over a policy that forbids detention center volunteers from speaking with the press.Souls Offering Loving and Compassionate Ears, also known as SOLACE, is not allowed to help at the Otay Mesa Detention Center until they sign a form promising not to speak with the media.In August, ICE discovered SOLACE wasn’t in compliance with their protocol before asking the group to resubmit the paperwork for their volunteers.ICE says the code of ethics is in place for the safety of the detainees. “These are often folks who don't have any family or friends in the United States so even if they could write or call they don't have anyone to connect with,” said Angela Fujii, a social justice coordinator with the First Unitarian Universalist.SOLACE volunteers are ready to help, but they want to make sure they can share with others about the place where things are kept pretty tight.SOLACE was also briefly barred from visiting during the Obama Administration but the compromise was met.Other groups are providing detainees with services, but SOLACE was the only one allowed to regularly visit. 1148
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Infinite Chemical Analysis Lab building in Miramar looks like any other chemical lab, but inside the products they are testing are all cannabis. InfiniteCal tests products for things like potency, pesticides, heavy metals and microbial analysis to make sure the products are safe for consumption and meet state standards. Josh Swider is the CEO and co-founder. Swider's company consists of roughly 45 employees, 30 of those are either chemists or biologists. The team tests products for licensed retailers to make sure their cannabis meets the standard for what is allowed by the state. When it comes to vaping, Swider says their analysis shows that what's making people sick is when the product is diluted, most recently with Vitamin E or Vitamin E acetate. According to the CDC, 33 people have died from lung related illnesses linked to e-ciggarettes or vaping products. Most of those samples tested by the FDA had THC. San Diego County has confirmed 22 vape related illnesses in the county. Although InfiniteCal doesn't just test products for vaping, Swider says the best thing a person can do is to do their research and make sure they are buying from a licensed retailer. He also recommends asking the business for their certificate of analysis to find out what's in the cannabis product they're consuming. InfiniteCal operates six days a week and also will tests an individual consumer's product if they show up to the lab. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Florida school shooting is conjuring painful memories for an uncle who calls his nephew the "14th Columbine victim.""You get choked up and then you're mad," said Tim Barnes.It was a flood of different emotions, as Barnes watched coverage of the tragedy in Florida.April 19th, 1999, as news broke about the massacre at Columbine High through frantic 911 calls, the San Diegan had his nephew Greg on his mind: A Columbine High student and one of the top basketball players in Colorado.Greg did survive the shootings, but one of his best friends did not. Greg was among several students who tried to keep the girl's basketball coach alive."From my understanding, he was holding Coach Sanders when he bled to death," said Barnes.Two months later, Barnes sat down with his nephew. "Everything's cool. I'm good. I'm fine. Don't really want to talk about it. And that scared me. You could tell not everything was okay," said Barnes.Less than a year later, Greg took his own life. Next to him was a CD, looped to play a song with the words, "I'm too depressed to go on.""Just complete shock. Unbelievable, still unbelievable," said Barnes.So many years later, the grief is now accompanied by a determination to prevent a repeat of his family's tragedy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The next great food craze could come from the waters of the San Diego Bay. A pair of scientists is planting a seaweed farm in the bay, to test the plant's marketability for use as food, animal feed, fertilizer, and bio-fuel."Kelp is the new kale," says Torre Polizzi, one of the owners of Sunken Seaweed.Polizzi and his partner Leslie Booher just got a 7,000 grant from the Port of San Diego to start a test-farm in the bay.
