SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Steve Askin tells the story of a tenant who rented from him for a decade.He charged rent below market - but still made out well."Over those ten years they paid me a quarter million dollars. They paid my mortgage, and then some," Askin said.Askin said he realizes he's way better off today because of his tenants.That's one reason he joined a group called The Property Owners for Fair and Affordable Housing. On Thursday, he and 15 other member landlords announced support of a bill that protects financially struggling tenants from eviction during the Coronavirus era."We as landlords aren't happy if someone can't pay the rent, but we have many more resources than our tenants," said Askin.Assembly Bill 1463, carried by Democrat David Chiu, would ban evictions of tenants who cannot pay rent through April 1, unless the Coronavirus state of emergency ends earlier. Tenants would then have a year to pay back the missed rent. Only then could a landlord take a tenant to court - and eviction would not be one of their legal remedies."It's trying to mandate something that we're already doing," said Kendra Bork, who heads the San Diego Rental Housing Association, which opposes the bill.Bork, CFO of Cambridge Management Group, said 90 percent of her tenants are paying rent on time - and the others are doing payment plans."We're trying to keep people in their apartments. We don't want a bunch of vacancies," Bork said.She said a better option would be rental assistance - which can also help keep the economy going. Bork also raised concerns about mortgage forbearance being deducted from a landlord's owed rent should it go to court.A spokeswoman for Assemblyman Chiu says the bill is being amended to make sure that won't happen. 1761

The big theme of the night was housing and homelessness, and Assemblymember Todd Gloria, Councilmember Barbara Bry, and community activist Tasha Williamson came prepared with answers."I will move homeless services to the offices of the mayor, currently it's outsourced to the housing administration, it sends a message its not a priority for this mayor or this City Hall," Gloria said.Gloria put the onus on himself if elected to solve homelessness, while Bry had a more collaborative approach, wanting to pressure the county for more help."I believe it is much more effective to send social workers out with iPads to talk to homeless individuals where they are, to send out social workers, not police officers," Bry said.But the biggest applause lines of the night came from political outsider Williamson, who pushed her platform for police oversight."We have been criminalized all our lives and the time is up, the time is now, we are going to stop it, we are going to be a sweeping sea of change when we talk about police accountability, rogue officers do not belong here, they will have too look for another job somewhere else," Williamson said.But it was the scooter issue that brought out the biggest punches."A few days ago I talked to [the San Diegan] who's wife is in critical condition at UCSD with skull fractures and severe bleeding after falling off a scooter, I was in tears after talking with him," Bry started. She went on to blame Gloria for sponsoring state legislation that made it legal for adults to ride scooters without requiring helmets. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego veterans from WWII and the Korean War are getting ready for a special trip. This weekend they'll board an Honor Flight to Washington D.C.10News is getting exclusive access to the trip and was at Honor Flight San Diego's last planning meeting before the special weekend gets off the ground. David Smith, Founder of Honor Flight San Diego, says it's incredibly important to thank our veterans while there's still time. The oldest veteran on this weekend's flight will be 99-years-old. "I've actually had veterans come up to me and say, 'ya know, in all these years no one has ever said thank you to me - this means so much'," said Smith.The group relies on fundraising to make the honor flight a reality - it costs 0,000 for the entire weekend.Our coverage of the Honor Flight continues Friday morning when Reporter Amanda Brandeis boards the plane with the veterans and will continue through Sunday when they all return to San Diego. Honor Flight San Diego welcomes the community to join the Sunday's homecoming at the San Diego International Airport. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six months after closing its doors to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SeaWorld San Diego is reopening through their weekend Zoo Days Bayside BBQ and Brews events. The special event will take place every weekend until SeaWorld can fully open. The park's attractions will be very limited, with guests able to enjoy all outdoor animals exhibits and shows."We’re opening as an accredited zoo and you can come in and enjoy all the live animal presentations we’re world famous for like the Orca Encounter, dolphins, Sea Lions Live and all the outdoor exhibits that people love and miss," said SeaWorld Park President Marilyn Hannes..Among closed signs for indoor exhibits, game rooms and rides, guests will also notice dozens of sanitizer stations, distance markers and download codes for digital park maps spread throughout.Visitors will also be able to continue enjoying the tide pool areas. "The water is highly filtrated, each of the systems were designed to be a touch pool so they have a high filtration and so that constant turnout makes it safe to do the interaction," Hannes said.Although some of the attractions are closed, Hannes said new ones will take its place, adding, "We’ve opened up Vistas to the Bay so we have a new waterfront area where you can that ocean breeze and try craft beers."Zoo Days will take place every Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. The event has a limited capacity and purchasing a ticket online acts as a reservation.
