SHERMAN HEIGHTS, Calif. (KGTV) - A storage facility for homeless people to keep their belongings is at capacity, leading some people to call for expansion.The facility is in Sherman Heights, near 20th Street and Commercial. It opened in June of 2018 with room for 500 bins.It was full by Halloween.Now there is a 200 person waiting list. The city initially wanted to put 1000 storage bins in the warehouse, but pushback from neighbors led to a compromise of just 500.Neighbors worried that the facility would be a magnet for homeless people, drawing them to the area.Six months later, people who spoke to 10News say the opposite has happened. They still see homeless people in the area, but not any more than before the facility opened.They also say the amount of clutter on the streets and sidewalks has decreased dramatically.Crime has also gone down in the area. According to the crimemapping.com website, there were 188 crimes reported within 1500 feet of the facility in August of 2018. In December, that number had dropped to 73 (see chart above).Part of that is from extra police patrol. A recent police department report says that SDPD is spending nearly million on overtime to add patrols in the neighborhood of the facility.City officials told the San Diego Union Tribune they have no plans to expand the facility. But at a meeting last month at the University of San Diego, several homeless advocated said it's an idea worth looking into. 1460

So much has changed from just one week before the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown hit New York City.Though a lot has changed, the NYPD’s “Options” program still persists.“Options” bridges relationships between police and some of the city’s toughest neighborhoods.With a rise in shootings and violence, it is needed now more than ever.Just a few weeks before a worldwide pandemic and months before nationwide unrest over racial injustice and police brutality, there was NYC youth engaging in candid conversations with members of the NYPD.The program has been two years running and bridges the gap between the police and the city’s dynamic youth.“This is the new era of neighborhood policing, and we see that NYC has to open up a lot more and really start listening to the youth of tomorrow,” Det. Jason Anazagasty said.A virtual reality program was also created, scripted and voiced by “Options” teens.It includes real-life scenarios that play out through a virtual reality headset.Their choices on how to handle cyberbullying, violence on the streets and so much are on full display — as are the consequences of those choices.Det. SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - Evacuees from the Valley Fire began to head home Thursday morning as Cal Fire lifted evacuation orders throughout the area."We're trying to head out early," said Deehorn Valley resident Dale Elliott. "That way we can get everything straightened up, cleaned up try to put things back."Elliott's family is one of 140 families the Red Cross helped over the last week. Evacuees were offered food, first aid, hotel rooms and more.Red Cross Regional CEO Shawn Mahoney said they served 1,200 meals on Wednesday alone.This was Elliott's first time having to evacuate, and he told ABC 10News, "With the dogs and my mother-in-law visiting and all of our stuff, we thought we should evacuate just to be on the safe side.”Elliott checked on his home Tuesday to make sure it hadn't been damaged in the fire. He said he'll have to clean out the refrigerator, but that's the only issue.Many others weren't as lucky.Cal Fire said 30 homes and 29 other buildings were destroyed in the fire. As the Valley Fire continues to burn, some areas are still under evacuation orders or warnings.The Red Cross says they will keep the shelters open as long as they're needed. 1186

Some may call this story a coincidence but this Corpus Christi, Texas couple calls it fate.Turns out they were both born on the same day, delivered by the same doctor all while at the same hospital.It was at Bay Area hospital almost 23 years ago that the special deliveries took place.Sierra Molina and Marcus Acuna’s love story is hard to believe but it’s true. Now, this couple wants to make their wedding day just as special as their love story.It was while the two were getting to know each other they learned this love connection was meant to be. That’s because the couple was born on the same day, in the same hospital.“I went and asked my mom. And she was like why what’s wrong? Well, the girl I’m talking to has the same birthday as me. She goes, really? And I go yes. It’s weird,” said Sierra Molina’s fiancee Marcus Acuna. Then they were delivered by the same doctor.“So when our parents told us we were like oh that’s cool let’s pull out the birth certificate and we saw it on there,” said Bride to be Sierra Molina.“It was divinely a shock to find out that there is somebody out there that has the same birthday as me and lives in the same town as me for years as long as we’ve been here,” said Acuna.Their love continued to grow and on Christmas Day in December of 2019, the two got engaged.“When I realized I wanted to marry her, I was like you know, it’s something that I want to do and this makes me happy and she makes me happy,” said Acuna.Since their story is so special the wedding date they chose will be as well.“Now that we are going to have our wedding on our birthday on August 23rd when we turn 23 like that’s so special like this date whether it’s during corona or not we know we wanted to have this date,” said Molina.If you are second-guessing getting married during a pandemic, the couple has some advice for you.“Just do it. It’s not about how big it is or how small it is, if it’s in a backyard, ya know just anything.
