Classes on social movements tend to focus on the past. But this Black Lives Matter class at the University of Colorado in Boulder focuses on what's happening right now. “So, the whole point is to connect what we're studying in the class to what's happening right now in the real world in real time,” says Professor Dr. Reiland Rabaka. Dr. Rabaka spent 18 months preparing for this class, touching on everything from police brutality and racial profiling to immigration and mental health. “People are documenting it as it evolves as it goes along, and that's really incredible,” the professor says. “And the students are very much a part of a lot of these struggles on the ground.” In March, just miles away from campus, a police officer pulled a gun on a black student picking up trash in his yard. The incident made national news, as well as class curriculum. “I did go to the march for that with like a hundred other people, and then the next day, I had class and talked about it,” says junior Makena Lambert. Lambert says she's been waiting for a class like this since the Black Lives Matter movement started. “No one was teaching me about it in high school, and I remember trying to get people to talk about it at my high school and it really remained unacknowledged,” Lambert says. Several universities nationwide have similar classes. There's even a Black Lives Matter Week of Action at elementary, middle and high schools around the country. For PhD student Jenean McGee, she says the class gives students the tools to become leaders and activists themselves.“It's a political statement. It's activism, and we're able to learn in our everyday lives take what we learned in that class and put it out into the world,” McGee says. 1747

After previously being paused amid the coronavirus pandemic, 2020 theme park ticket sales and hotel reservations resume July 9.Disney begins its phased reopening on Saturday, July 11. Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom reopen first, with EPCOT and Hollywood Studios following on July 15.Ahead of the reopening, Disney paused new ticket sales and hotel bookings to focus on existing ticket holders and Annual Passholders.According to a press release, tickets and hotel bookings may be released at different times Thursday. Disney is using an online reservation system to open safely and manage park attendance. Virtual waiting rooms will be used to manage the high volume of guests trying to buy tickets or book stays.Reservations are required for all guests to visit the parks, as well as a valid park ticket for the same park on the same date to enter. Make sure to check the part reservation availability before buying new tickets, then visit Disney's website to make your park reservations immediately after your new ticket purchase.New safety guidelines include:Temperature checks: All guests to the park will be screened by no-touch thermometers at Disney Springs or at the Walt Disney World theme parks. Park officials say anyone displaying a temperature of 100.4 F or above will not be allowed entry. Officials ask that you check you and your entire party's temperature before leaving you home.Parking: Complimentary transportation will also be provided between the guests' Disney Resort hotel and Disney theme parks. Face coverings are required at all times while boarding and using Walt Disney World transportation. Valet service is temporarily unavailable, with the exception of guests with disabilities.Face masks: Anyone over the age of 2 will be required to wear a face mask. Park guests are not allowed to wear costume masks.Social distancing: The parks will have signs and ground markings to help guests practice physical distancing. Physical barriers will be placed around cash registers or at Guest Relations to help keep everyone safe.Cashless transactions: Officials recommend guests use cashless payment options, including debit cards, credit cards, and Disney Gift Cards, which can be purchased with cash.Hand sanitizer: Hand sanitizer locations will be made available all throughout the park. Hand washing will also be made easily available for guests.Character meet and greets will be unavailable, though you'll still see them roaming around the parks. It's the kind of situation nobody wants to be in: getting sick unexpectedly and left with a hefty hospital bill to pay. But it's a situation Jamesia Shutt is all too familiar with. Three years ago, Shutt got sick and went to the emergency room in the middle of the night. "They did some X-rays, some morphine, gave me an antibiotic and sent me home in like two hours maybe,” Shutt recalls of the visit. “You have pneumonia, go home." That two-hour visit to the ER turned out be quite expensive. "A couple weeks later, I don't know when, I get a bill for ,000," she says. It’s a sticker shock she didn't see coming. "My thought is well, I'm not a doctor or a medical person, so I’m trusting this cost, whatever they say it's going to cost," she says. It’s a problem that David Silverstein, the founder of the non-profit group Broken Healthcare, sees it all the time. "Imagine if you and I went to a restaurant and we sat down at the same table at the same time with the same waiter and we're given the same menu with different prices on it, how would that make you feel? Well, this happens in healthcare every day," Silverstein says. Silverstein has been fighting to make sure patients aren't hit with what are called “surprise bills.” "The number one thing is ask a lot of questions and don't get frustrated by the answers,” he says. “As a consumer, you have rights. If they say they don't know, say that's not good enough." Silverstein says ask questions to find out if anyone doing the procedure is out of your insurance network. This year, the White House started requiring hospitals to list prices online. The issue with that is those prices are listed without factoring in insurance, which complicates things even more. "It does not help 99 percent of the population, but it's a step in the right direction,” Silverstein says. “We need transparency from both the providers and the insurance carriers.” When the president held this meeting last month, both Silverstein and Shutt were by his side, because they know the problem firsthand. "To have the president ask what happened and why do you have this medical bill was pretty incredible," Shutt says. Three years later, Broken Healthcare's attorneys are fighting Shutt’s hospital bill. "It is a game and Americans need to learn the rules of the game, and they need to learn their rights and play the game to win until such time our government officials do the right thing and change the rules, so we don't have to play this sleazy game anymore," Silverstein says. 2540
