SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A bevvy of delicious foods will take over Balboa Park this month, as a caravan of food trucks make the park home for five days.Balboa Park's Spring Fling Food Truck Festival will bring a variety of delicious culinary treats to the park, transforming the El Prado and Plaza de Panama into a massive, foodie festival.Not only will San Diegans get to try a variety of type of cuisine, but several hands-on activities for kids, and live entertainment will be provided. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of local Iranian community leaders are gathering Wednesday to denounce a potential war with Iran.The protest, led by a coalition of human rights and faith leaders, is scheduled to take place at Balboa Park in front of the Natural History Museum at 10 a.m., the group announced.Wednesday's rally is in response to President Donald Trump's order to kill Iranian Revolutionary Guard Gen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 30-year-old man was hospitalized Saturday night after police say he was stabbed outside a City Heights liquor store.According to police, the 30-year-old victim was standing outside the Qwik Korner Liquor store at 39th Street and University Avenue when a woman walked up to him.The woman, later identified as Irmalinda Gonzales, 37, then started swinging her arm, stabbing the victim in the left arm, police say.The man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Gonzales was stopped about a block away and taken into custody. 574

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A .2 million judgment against the San Diego Rock ‘N’ Roll marathon over injuries suffered by an elite wheelchair athlete was recently upheld.Craig Blanchette was born without legs due to a birth defect, but that has not stopped him pursuing his passions. He is a wheelchair racing champion. At 20-years-old, he won a bronze in the 1988 Summer Olympics and over the years, set more than 20 world records. “Wheelchair racing just fit me,” Blanchette said. He eventually took a break to compete in hand cycling, but was preparing to return to wheelchair racing. Court documents said he did everything to prepare for the 2014 Rock ‘N’ Roll marathon, including studying the course map and virtual tour several times. Documents state Competitor Group, which operates the marathon, eliminated a lane on Eleventh Avenue an hour before the race—a move that changed Blanchette’s life. “I wasn’t racing recklessly. I was definitely going to make the corner,” Blanchette said. “When it’s too late to do anything about it, I realized the course had been narrowed by 13 feet. It was significant.” Blanchette was not aware of the change and crashed into a car. He was going more than 20 miles per hour at the time, according to court documents. “It’s the crash that ended my career,” Blanchette said.He filed a civil case against Competitor Group. A jury ruled in his favor and the Court of Appeal recently upheld a judgment of .2 million in his favor. “It’s the best they can offer because they can’t me my racing career back,” he added.It was bittersweet for Blanchette, who had to undergo surgery and several months of recovery. “The doctors basically told me that if I went back to racing and I injured it again, they wouldn’t be able put it back together like I did the first time,” he said.Blanchette now hand cycles, which uses different muscles, and spends time helping other athletes. He has been part of the National Wheelchair Sports Camp for years and this year, Blanchette’s attorney is also helping out. “This case was very eye-opening for me,” said attorney Russel Myrick. “With the proceeds from the case, we intend to make big improvements to the camp and we’re really looking forward to working with the kids.” They hope this ruling will help other athletes with disabilities. “They didn’t accommodate for us in the way that we deserved,” Blanchette said. “[You] want to treat us the same in value, but not the same in function.” Competitor Group did not return Team 10’s request for comment. 2529

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 14-year-old from Jamul was among seven military teenagers crowned Operation Homefront 2018 Military Child of the Year.Isabelle Richards, who attends High Tech Middle School in Point Loma, received the award this week for her accomplishments in leadership and extracurricular activities while facing the challenges of military family life.Richards was given the Child of the Year award for the U.S. Navy.The San Diego teenager created a local call to action group called Cards and Cupcakes Supporting Our Wounded Warriors, which sends greeting cards and cupcakes to a segment of veterans. She also founded and runs the Dove Self-Esteem project at High Tech Middle.The hours Richards has dedicated to the cause pales in comparison to the contributions of wounded veterans, according to the teen, who says "When I am tired or feeling lazy, I remember what they sacrificed, and they never complain."In addition to her accomplishments, Richards has worked with the Freedom Station and USO San Diego and maintained a 4.0 GPA.
