A former refugee is using his life experience and brilliant mind to inspire world peace through video games. He’s using a groundbreaking approach that puts the players in a position to save real lives.Lual Mayen is proud of where he came from.“My name is Lual Mayen and I’m from South Sudan,” he said as we started our interview, explaining how his life started. “I was born on the way as my family was actually fleeing war there and ended up in Northern Uganda.”He spent his first two decades on Earth in an environment most couldn’t imagine.“I've been in a refugee camp for like 22 years of my life,” Mayen explains. “That’s where I spent all my childhood in a refugee camp.”Mayen is also proud of where he’s going. He lives in Washington, D.C. now and is focused on helping to chip away at the global refugee crisis. The UN Refugee Agency estimates it affects 79.5 million people.“I'm here to create more opportunities for refugees,” he said, without giving it a second thought.Mayen is accomplishing his goal through video games. He’s the founder, CEO and self-taught developer for his company, Junub Games. And he’s about to launch a new game that’s all about peace. It’s called Salaam, an Arabic word that means peace. We asked Mayen to describe it.“So, Salaam is an Arabic word that means peace,” he starts. “[It’s] a high-tension video game that puts the player in the shoes of a refugee who’s fleeing a country.”In Salaam, the goal is to get your character from a war-torn country to a peaceful space safely. The character faces real-life challenges like hunger and thirst along the way.For Mayen, the project is no game.“That is going to bring the global communities together virtually,” he said.He designed Salaam to include players in the game in a way that’s never been done before.“You are like interacting with a virtual character and you're also interacting with somebody in a refugee camp.”Mayen is teaming up with a nonprofit to give players a hand in helping him change the world. A portion of in-app purchases will go to help refugees.“When you buy food in the game, you actually bring somebody in a refugee camp food,” he explained. “When you buy water in the game, you’re giving them water. When you buy medicine, you are buying them medicine.”He sees the idea as more than a fun way to get players more involved in games. He sees it as a way to make the world a better place.“And that's why I personally believe that we can use our experiences to create a sustainable future for other people.”Mayen credits one person for his success today – his mother.“I'm happy that I have somebody like her in my life,” he said, smiling. He tells the story of how his mom quietly saved money for years to get him his first computer.“And one day, she was like ‘Lual here is 0, you can use it to buy a computer.’ And that moment just changed my life.”Mayen says none of his work will top what she did for him and his siblings, who today, all live in Canada.“I'm proud that no matter what I'm going to do, it will never overshadow the work that she has done in my life.”Today, Mayen stays focused on addressing the refugee crisis he says isn’t going away.“People are being displaced because of war. People are being displaced because of climate change.”He hopes Salaam helps create a solution.“You can be you as a player and you still help people,” he said. And he hopes it gives refugees new opportunity and helps more people realize that refugees are people.“We can be programmers. We can go to the moon if we want. We can be like anything we all want to,” Mayen said through a smile. “If we have opportunity. It’s hope.” 3638

A financial lifeline for millions of Americans who lost their jobs when the coronavirus pandemic brought the economy to a halt in the spring is coming to an end this weekend: The extra 0 a week in unemployment benefits on top of state benefits is expiring. This boost has been vital in keeping out-of-work Americans and those working reduced hours afloat. The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, passed in March, created a trillion economic rescue package in response to the pandemic. It provided an extra 0 through the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program to help reduce the impact for the over 20 million affected when businesses were shuttered nationwide. If you’ve been receiving the 0 weekly unemployment check, here’s what to know — and some suggestions on what to do now. When does the 0 benefit end?The relief act scheduled the benefit to end “on or before July 31.” However, most states will issue the final payment on July 25, which concludes the last full payment cycle before the deadline. New York is the exception, with a July 26 cutoff. What happens when the 0 benefit ends?Discussions on a new relief package and how it will address unemployment are continuing in Washington, D.C. Democrats in the House approved a trillion relief package in May to extend the unemployment benefit through 2020. Republicans in the Senate expect to introduce a proposal on July 27, which means it isn’t likely that new legislation will arrive before the 0 benefit lapses. It could be a matter of days or weeks before an agreement is reached. While your unemployment benefits may shrink considerably during this gap, the aid won’t stop completely. You’ll still have access to your state’s unemployment insurance if you haven’t exhausted those benefits. Another program from the original relief bill, Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, expanded unemployment eligibility for up to 39 weeks of benefits; it runs through Dec. 31 at the latest.Whether the extra 0 weekly unemployment check returns is unclear. The scenario could play out a few different ways: The benefit could be extended in the current amount, the amount could change or the additional compensation could disappear entirely.Contact your state’s unemployment office after any new or revised programs to find out if you’re eligible or will have to reapply for benefits. What can you do now? Here are a few things you can do as the 0 extra benefit comes to an end:Continue certifying for unemployment benefits. Inform your state’s unemployment office of your unemployment eligibility. You’ll typically do this every week or two, depending on where you live. If the supplemental benefit gets renewed, it’s possible that it will be applied retroactively. Certifying your unemployment can keep you in the system and help you avoid missing out on funds.Seek help with your bills. If you’re concerned about missing payments or getting evicted due to lost income, contact your lenders, utility providers and landlord to find out your options. Many companies are offering financial assistance during the crisis.Work on your budget. Adjust your budget to account for the change in income. List your necessary expenses so you can anticipate what it’ll cost to cover the basics and trim additional expenses where you can. If you have an emergency fund, now could be the time to use it.More From NerdWalletIs That ‘Contact Tracer’ Really a Scammer? A California utility company said its crews found a damaged transmission tower and holes in a power pole at separate locations near the site where the Camp Fire started.More than a month after the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in the state's history broke out, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. released a more detailed account of outages it experienced that day.In a letter to the California Public Utilities Commission, PG&E said one of its employees called 911 on November 8 -- the day the deadly wildfire began -- after spotting flames in the vicinity of a high-voltage tower near the town of Pulga in Butte County. That fire was reported almost 15 minutes after the utility experienced a transmission line outage at the same location, the company said. It was also around the same time the Camp Fire broke out.The electric utility had disclosed in a regulatory filing last month that it "experienced an outage" on a transmission line in Butte County about 15 minutes before the wildfire began but had not released additional details.PG&E said in its Tuesday letter that inspectors later discovered that a hook connecting part of the transmission line and the transmission tower was broken. They also found a flash mark on the tower. The company also detailed a second outage at another location. That incident was reported a few miles away from the first outage and about 15 minutes after the wildfire started. When crews went to check the outage a day later, the letter states, they "observed that the pole and other equipment was on the ground with bullets and bullet holes at the break point of the pole and on the equipment."Meredith E. Allen, PG&E's senior director of regulatory relations, explained that details about the incidents are preliminary and they remain under investigation."The cause of these incidents has not been determined and may not be fully understood until additional information becomes available, including information that can only be obtained through examination and testing of the equipment retained by CAL FIRE," Allen wrote to regulators. The Camp Fire burned through more than 153,000 acres in Butte County, killing at least 85 people and destroying thousands of structures. It was contained November 25 after becoming the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history.Cal Fire, the state's forestry and fire protection agency, has said the cause of the Camp Fire is still under investigation. On Tuesday, PG&E said "the loss of life, homes and businesses in the Camp Fire is truly devastating.""Our focus continues to be on assessing our infrastructure to further enhance safety, restoring electric and gas service where possible, and helping customers begin to recover and rebuild. Throughout our service area, we are committed to doing everything we can to further reduce the risk of wildfire," the company said in a statement.PG&E made its findings public weeks after a federal judge ordered the company to explain any potential role it played in causing the deadly Camp Fire and any other major wildfires in the state. The company has until Dec. 31 to submit written answers to federal officials, according to court documents.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. A federal judge in California put a temporary stop Thursday to efforts by Stormy Daniels' attorney to depose President Donald Trump and his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen over a 0,000 payout from Cohen to the porn star before the 2016 election.Judge S. James Otero of the US District Court for the Central District of California denied the motion for an expedited trial and discovery process, saying Daniels' attorney, Michael Avenatti, was "premature" in making the motion because Trump and Essential Consultants LLC, the company established by Cohen to pay Daniels the 0,000 to keep quiet about an alleged affair between her and Trump, have not yet filed a petition to compel arbitration, which they have stated they're going to do.Avenatti tweeted that he intends to refile the motion as soon as Trump, Cohen and the company "file their motion to compel arbitration seeking to hide the facts from public view. We expect this any day."In his decision, Otero admonished the parties, writing that "instant litigation is not the most important matter on the court's docket." He also vacated a hearing date previously set for April 30.In the motion he filed earlier this week, Avenatti requested to depose both Trump and Cohen, who was added this week as a defendant in the lawsuit, for "no greater than two hours."The request also asked for "targeted requests for the production of documents directed to Mr. Trump and Mr. Cohen on various topics relating to the hush agreement."Avenatti laid out questions he'd like answered, including whether Trump knew about the hush agreement and the scope of his involvement, where the payment came from, what Cohen's role was, and whether Trump consented to the agreement and was involved in efforts to silence Daniels "to benefit his presidential campaign by preventing voters from hearing Plaintiff speak publicly."The motion is the latest in the legal battle between Daniels, an adult film actress whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, and Cohen, Trump, and the limited liability company Cohen created to pay her to keep quiet about the alleged affair with Trump more than a decade ago.Daniels said she was pressed to sign the document, and her legal team now says the agreement is invalid because it was never signed by Trump. On Monday, Daniels' legal team amended her lawsuit to include a defamation claim against Cohen. Daniels' friend and fellow adult film actress Alana Evans, who has publicly tried to corroborate Daniels' claims of an affair, also said she will file her own defamation claims by the end of the month.Trump continues to deny that he had an affair with Daniels, White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah said Monday afternoon. 2756
