Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Thursday he is not sending senators home until there is a coronavirus stimulus bill that has been approved by the chamber.“The Senate is not going anywhere until we have COVID relief out the door. People's lives depend upon it,” he said.Last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that the House will not break for the holidays until pandemic relief is passed.There is added pressure on Congress as the government runs out of funding Friday night.But both sides have been working on economic relief for months, but have failed to come to any sort of compromise.Two weeks ago, a bipartisan group of legislators proposed a 0 billion stimulus plan that would extend funds for additional unemployment benefits for up to 18 weeks per worker. The legislation also would replenish funds for the Paycheck Protection Program, which helped companies affected by the pandemic make payroll.In recent days, members of Congress have pushed for 0 stimulus checks to be added to the comprehensive package. The checks would be sent to Americans in a similar fashion as the stimulus checks most Americans received in the spring. 1783

Seven people, including four children, have been found dead in a rural property in Western Australia, in what's believed to be the country's worst mass shooting in more than two decades.Officers were called to a residential property in Osmington, around 170 miles (270 kilometers) south of state capital Perth, in the early hours of Friday morning, where the seven bodies were discovered, said Western Australia Police Commissioner Chris Dawson.Police arrived at the property following a call from "'male person' connected to the property" shortly after 5:00 a.m. local time (5 p.m. Thursday ET), national broadcaster ABC reported.Five bodies were found inside the house, and the other two outside, close to the property. Dawson described the incident as a "tragedy" and "horrific incident."Police were treating the incident as a murder-suicide, according to ABC."It appears that gunshot wounds are there, but I don't want to go further than that... two firearms have been located," Commissioner Dawson said, according to the ABC.The ABC is reporting that it is Australia's worst mass-shooting since 1996's Port Arthur massacre, in which a lone gunman killed 35 people with a military-style semiautomatic rifle.The massacre, in Australia's southern island state of Tasmania, was the last straw for Australians, following a decade of gun massacres which had left more than 100 people dead.Just 12 days after the Port Arthur shooting, the government of Prime Minister John Howard announced nationwide gun law reform, by far the most popular initiative of his first year as Australian leader.In Friday's incident, police statement said there were "no concerns about wider public safety."Police say they are unable to share any other details and are currently looking for next of kin and friends to notify.  1816

SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) – A construction worker was struck by a vehicle and killed along state Route 94 in Spring Valley in a crash the California Highway Patrol said is DUI-related.The collision happened just before 10 p.m. Wednesday on westbound SR-94 near Cougar Canyon Drive, CHP officials said.According to the CHP, the stretch of roadway was “an active construction zone” with the westbound side coned off. A construction worker was directing traffic when a 1996 Lincoln Town Car entered the coned area and hit him, the CHP reported.The worker, identified only as a 27-year-old San Diego resident, was rushed to the hospital but died from his injuries.CHP officials said the Lincoln’s driver, 69-year-old San Diego resident Arnold Lee Patton, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.Patton was booked into County Jail for felony DUI causing injury or death and gross vehicular manslaughter, the CHP reported.The incident remains under investigation. 988

SPRING HILL, Fla. -- A Florida mother was arrested on Wednesday after deputies say she left her 3-year-old son home alone while she went out drinking. Hernando County deputies responded a home in Spring Hill after receiving a tip that a child was at the home without supervision. Deputies attempted to contact the 3-year-old boy around 2 a.m. on Wednesday. When deputies arrived they saw Kristen Broker, 27, being dropped off at the home. The deputy asked Broker if she knew the child. Broker told the deputy that he was her son. The deputy then asked if she knew whether or not the child was in the home alone.Deputies say that Broker told them that she knew the child was home alone. She told them that he was sleeping inside.Deputies found the young boy awake inside the home. He was in a queen sized bed with no guardrails, according to HCSO. "[The boy] appeared to be scared as to where his mother was," HCSO wrote in a press release.Deputies say that the only other adult who lives at the home was Broker's boyfriend, who was at work.Broker told deputies that she was at a local bar. Deputies say she appeared to be extremely intoxicated. She told deputies that she had been drinking since 1 p.m. on Tuesday, according to HCSO.Broker said she had consumed some rum and cokes and some beers, according to HCSO. Deputies say that she claimed she was only gone for "30 minutes," and that her son was asleep when she left.The child was clearly awake when deputies arrived at the home.Deputies say that Broker appeared almostBroker didn't appear to think it was an issue to leave her child home for any amount of time, according to the arrest affidavit.Broker was arrested on one count of child neglect, booked into the Hernando County Jail under a ,000 bond. Starbucks is exchanging its iconic green straws for recyclable strawless lids.The newer tops were modeled after the lids the coffee company has used on their hot drinks.They will have a drinking spout and contain about 9% "less plastic than the flat lid and straw historically used for iced beverages."“We developed and trialed several prototypes to arrive at this milestone,” said Andy Corlett, director of global packaging solutions and innovations, in a press release. “A recyclable, strawless lid becoming the standard for iced drinks is one small way we can give more than we take from the planet. This is a significant moment for Starbucks as we work to reduce waste and safeguard the environment.”Corlett and his team helped design the lid, the company said.Drinks with whipped cream and blended drinks, like frappuccinos, will still come with a domed lid and straw.The company plans to reduce 50% of waste by 2030.Lids will be rolled out to stores in the US and Canada in the coming year, the company said.Straws will still be available upon request, the company said. 1084
