POINT ROBERTS, Wash. -- In Point Roberts, Washington, the beauty of nature isn’t hard to find.“The environment is unsurpassed,” said Brian Calder, director of the Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce. “I mean, it's a beautiful spot.”It’s a town of about 1,000 people, where two nations meet: the U.S. and Canada.Lately, though, people there feel more like they’re caught in the middle.“We're surrounded by foreign territory, not part of North America, USA,” Calder said.Point Roberts is what’s known as an “exclave.” When a 19th century treaty established the 49th parallel as part of the U.S. border with Canada, Point Roberts ended up on the American side, but cut off from the rest of the U.S. because it sits at the end of a peninsula, with Canada to the north of it.Normally, travelling back and forth across the border isn’t an issue.However, because of the coronavirus, the border is closed and the town – which relies on tourism – is at a standstill.“Our traffic comes from Canada, lower mainland primarily, and that's what drives our economy. Period,” Calder said. “We have nothing internally.”Whitney McElroy owns Breakwaters Bar & Grill, where hundreds of people usually gather for music and food. That didn’t happen this year, though. The current situation forced him to furlough all but two employees.“We're down between 85 and 90%,” McElroy said of the grill. “By opening the border, it would considerably help this community. It would bring it back to life again, as it's pretty much dead now.”One of the few things keeping the town alive is the lone supermarket.“On a normal summer week, we do we see about 8,000 customers,” said Ali Hayton, who owns the Point Roberts Marketplace.This year, business at the supermarket is down 80%. Hayton applied for the federal Paycheck Protection Program, which helped financially, but only through July.“I don't want a handout because those go away,” Hayton said. “I want to work for a living and the only way I can do that is if I have people able to come down here.”Weekly testing shows that, so far, there have been no recorded cases of coronavirus in Point Roberts.Because of its unusual location, surrounded by water on three sides and Canada to the north, the border closure isn’t just affecting businesses in Point Roberts. It’s also affecting families, in some cases, by separating them.“People can't sustain - financially and emotionally and spiritually - this kind of stress,” said Point Roberts resident Rena Andreoli.Andreoli and her family are dual citizens of the U.S. and Canada, who live in Point Roberts. Since the lone school in town only goes up to 3rd grade, her children, like some others there, attend nearby schools in Canada. School, though, is considered a non-essential border crossing. So, in order to continue going to her current high school in Canada, her oldest daughter moved in with friends of the family.“By doing that to a family, we're really, we're just killing these kids,” Andreoli said. “So, we need to smarten up as a country, both countries, and look past the politics and look past all that.”Residents believe there could be a simple solution.“If we can have an exemption federally from both sides of the fence, then I think it would definitely ease things and make things a lot more palatable for people,” said Nic Lehoux, who lives in Point Roberts.Recently, a twice weekly passenger ferry service and small plane service began for residents in Point Roberts. Before then, they had no other way to reach the U.S., without driving through the Canadian border and over into Washington state.Still, the border remains closed for the foreseeable future, as the closure has been renewed every 30 days for the past six months. 3724

PALA, Calif. (KGTV) - A North County family lost everything in a fire but their dog, thanks to a man who ran into a burning home. Firefighters yelled at Jose Guzman to stop as he ran past them into the house in Pala this week. "When I ran through curtain of fire where my van was and fence, I didn't know what was behind that, decided to come here anyways,” said Guzman. Guzman didn’t care about belongings; he wanted to save his pit bull, Gabbana. "I knew my dog was here, I knew she was here,” he said. “I ran through here tried to stay in the middle this was going, this was on fire, couldn't see anything." Gabbana was hiding behind the toilet. "All I wanted was to get my dog, I came in here, I didn't hesitate, I just, I had to get her, she's part of the family." Guzman, his wife, and two daughters had only lived in the home two months. "There's nothing that survived, nothing, all our savings were here." Guzman managed to save what mattered. "Me and family would've been destroyed, we love that dog, I'm sure there's people that would do the same thing,” Guzman said. While firefighters caution against untrained people running into fires, Guzman's rescued had a happy ending. No one was hurt and the community is helping the family through GoFundMe. 1268

OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - Eight border wall prototypes constructed in South San Diego County are in the process of being dismantled Wednesday, according to Customs and Border Protection officials. "At this point, we have learned a lot from them, but we don't necessarily have a purpose or use for them anymore, and we will be bringing them down," a CBP official told CNN. RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Candidate describes border wall prototype “Those are not things that the [congressional] language necessarily precludes and they're items that we have been able to add to our tool kit," added the official. The prototypes, which stand 30 feet tall, are in the path of the secondary border fence project, a Border Patrol source told 10News. The Department of Homeland Security hired companies to build the prototypes, which were finished in October 2017. Over two months, Customs and Border Protection officials tested the walls using power tools, hand tools, and other methods. The CBP evaluated the prototypes to determine if anyone could get through by climbing or digging. PALA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 5-year-old boy critically injured in Saturday’s deadly bus crash was airlifted to a Riverside County hospital Sunday, authorities said. The young boy was airlifted from Inland Valley Medical Center to the Riverside University Health System Medical Center in Moreno Valley to be treated for a head injury, California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Latulippe said. The boy was among 21 passengers on a charter bus traveling to Tijuana from El Monte. The crash happened on Interstate 15 south of State Route 76. Three women were killed in the crash that left 18 others hospitalized. Five of those injured were taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, five to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar and eight to Temecula Valley Hospital, Latulippe said. The bus then continued down an embankment before landing on its roof, ejecting several passengers. A vehicle inspection report dated November 5, 2019, shows that, as of that date, the windshield wipers were either inoperative or defective. The same report shows that the vehicle had no spare fuses “as required.” A second report of the bus line revealed that 48 percent of vehicles in that particular safety group have better on-road performance. OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a person of interest after a mother and daughter were shot and killed at an Otay Mesa home Sunday morning.San Diego Police were called to the residence on the 4300 block of Ebersole Drive after receiving reports of shots fired around 8:30 a.m.When police arrived they found a 37-year-old woman in the front yard with a gunshot wound.Police then learned that another woman was injured inside the house. They found a 65-year-old woman, also suffering from gunshot wounds.Both of the women who were shot died from their injuries. Police believe that the person of interest in the case, Justice Love Peace, aka. Jeremiah Horton, took a 6-month-old boy from the home. Shortly after 3 p.m., police said they had safely located the 6-month-old boy, but were still searching for Horton.Horton is considered armed and dangerous.Police believe Horton is the infant's father, the 37-year-old woman is the infant's mother, and the 65-year-old woman is the 37-year-old's mother.
