ENCINITAS, CA (KGTV) -- As 9/11 approaches, we reflect on those who lost their lives, as well as, military members who have fought and continuing to fight for our freedoms. And in Encinitas they are doing just that, as one local business is paying tribute with the name on their products. The name of the company is Bubs Naturals, and they are all about a healthy living."Bubs Naturals is the highest grade collagen protein and MCT oil powder that you can get on the market. It's a fantastic way to supplement your life and create a healthier you," says co-owner Sean Lake.So how did the name Bubs come about? For Sean it all goes back to a childhood friendship."Bubs is a tribute to Glen "Bub" Doherty. He was a former Navy SEAL, an Encinitas resident, my roommate, and lifelong friends since we were kids."A friendship that ended way too soon."Glen was one of the Navy SEAL'S who was killed in the terrorist attacks on 9/11 in Benghazi, Libya. So the brand is a tribute to Glen and his way of life, which was a guy who stood for self improvement."In their younger years, Sean says he and Glen might be considered ski bums."Two guys turning 25, who were trying to figure out what we were going to do with our lives."Sean ended up going to college in Utah, while Glen decided to become a Navy SEAL."We joked about that old Charlie Sheen movie Navy SEAL's, and I was like, that's what you want to do?"While Sean and his partner T.J. are the Co-Founders of Bubs Naturals, Glen plays a major part in the company. "We joked that Glen is the third partner at Bubs. He's apart of this operation as his spirit is in everything that we do."And in Glen's memory, Bubs donates 10% of their sales to the Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation which provides scholarships for military veterans and their families. 1804

ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) — A man who gained internet fame as "Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker" was sentenced to 57 years in prison Thursday for the beating death of a New Jersey man he had met in Times Square.Caleb McGillvary will have to serve at least 85% of his sentence under terms imposed in state Superior Court in Union County. The 30-year-old Alberta, Canada, native was convicted last month of killing 73-year-old lawyer Joseph Galfy at Galfy's New Jersey home in May 2013. Authorities said the two met in New York City and the defendant stayed at Galfy's home.McGillvary alleged he acted in self-defense following an attempted sexual assault. Prosecutors said his statements were inconsistent and also cited the victim's extensive injuries. Galfy was found beaten to death in his bedroom, wearing only his socks and underwear.Several days after Galfy's death, an employee at a Starbucks in Philadelphia recognized McGillvary, and he was arrested at a bus station.A few months before meeting Galfy, McGillvary gained a measure of fame after intervening in an attack on a California utility worker. In a TV interview viewed millions of times online, he described using a hatchet he was carrying to repeatedly hit a man who had struck the worker with his car, and also fend off a further attack on two women. 1321

FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) - An employee at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Parish in Fallbrook has been suspended after allegations of sexually inappropriate dating app chats were revealed in a video released by a vigilante group that conducts stings to catch suspected predators. 10News is not revealing the name of the employee because he has not been charged with a crime.A spokesperson for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego confirmed the employee's suspension, telling 10News the church pastor called the San Diego County Sheriff's Department to report the employee after seeing the video posted on social media Saturday morning. The video was captured Nov. 21 by a group calling itself the "CC Unit" -- "CC" stands for "Creep Catching." The group has posted more than 60 videos over the past year, including one that led to the court martial of a Camp Pendleton Marine. In an interview with 10News, the group's leader, who asked to be identified as "Ghost," said they create profiles on dating sites. When someone reaches out, the CC Unit decoy claims to be a minor. In this particular case, Ghost claimed to be 14. Ghost said the conversation turned sexual, with the employee asking for nude pictures and eventually a meet-up. When he arrived for the meeting at a grocery store, instead of a 14-year-old boy, he was confronted by several men who were recording on their phones. The video stretches for several minutes as the employee tries to evade the CC Unit. "He was denying we had his pictures, we had his chat logs," Ghost said. "I was like 'OK, if you're so afraid, if you don't know what's going on, why don't you call the police because that's what any normal human being would do?'"Ghost admits that law enforcement does not approve of his actions. Criminal defense attorney Guadalupe Valencia told 10News that vigilante groups make the job of law enforcement harder and can jeopardize criminal investigations and prosecutions. "They can cause this person to maybe go free of prosecution because they mishandled the situation. That's a really big danger," said Valencia. Valencia said the CC Unit members could be opening up themselves to criminal charges or civil liability.Despite the criticism, Ghost said he stands by his actions. "They say it makes it harder for them, but I haven't seen them do as much work as I have done over the past year. I think the slaps on the wrist they (sexual predators) get right now is nothing compared to the embarrassment they go through when I expose them," said Ghost. 2532

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — Encinitas officials announced a "one-of-a-kind" crosswalk has been placed across Coast Highway 101 in downtown.Officials say the artistic crosswalk featuring surfboard shapes and waves spans across the highway at G Street and took two years of coordination between city staff and City Council to put together. The city says the crosswalk will improve walkability and bring more public art to the area.Artist Steffen Vala, whose work has appeared around the globe and been featured by Apple, Marvel, and other big brands, was commissioned for the crosswalk."The iconography of surfboard shapes is a nod to each surfer's 'magic board,' unique to them like their fingerprint. Juxtaposing this individualism is a unifying tidal wave laid out like the ocean's fingerprint that connects all the surfboards. This symbolizes the unifying, collective, 'party wave' we are all riding and our love in protecting the environment while celebrating our differences," the city said in a release. The city says the crosswalk is the longest decorative crosswalk of its kind and first one across a historic highway. 1132

ESCONDIDO, Calif (KGTV) - An albino red-tailed boa constrictor named "Lemony Snicket" is back home.A man wearing a hood and backpack returned the snake on May 16 to the EcoVivarium children's museum in Escondido. Museum officials believe Lemony disappeared on April 29. The snake was dehydrated and had not been fed. It was also full of mites. Lemony will undergo a 30-day quarantine.RELATED: Snake named 'Lemony Snicket' missing after unfortunate events at Escondido museumThe boa disappeared after a series of — ahem, "unfortunate" — events during a tour at the children's museum. Lemony was taken out of its cage for guests, before being locked back up.During the tour, however, museum officials said a man in his 20s excused himself from the group never to return. Later in the day, they said the boa was missing.A security camera facing Lemony's enclosure was also inoperable. Earlier the same day, the camera broke. A security expert said it appeared the camera was knocked out by some type of electrical charge. The museum said it would not press any charges against the person they believe to have taken the snake. 1144
