A ground search team in the Indian Himalayas has spotted five bodies on the unnamed peak where eight climbers are believed to have gone missing a week ago.Pithoragarh District Magistrate Vijay Kumar Jogdande told CNN Monday that the bodies appear to be partially buried in an avalanche on the peak in different locations. The bodies were identified following analysis of photographs taken by a helicopter that conducted an air survey of the area earlier in the day.By Monday afternoon local time, the search operation had stopped for the day, Jogdande said. Now, authorities are formulating a plan to recover the bodies. On Sunday, helicopter teams saw signs of an avalanche on the peak the group were thought to be on, according to two state officials. On Monday a lone chopper went to recce the area and its crew discovered the backpack at an elevation of about 5,000 meters.Jogdande said it was likely the missing team had been caught up in a "huge avalanche.""The chances of survival are almost zero now," he said. The missing climbers -- four Britons, two Americans, an Australian and their Indian liaison officer -- went missing in the region of Nanda Devi East, one of the highest peaks in India at just over 7,400 meters (24,000 feet.)The group was attempting to scale a previously unclimbed and unnamed peak believed to be about 6,477 meters (21,250 feet) high, according to 1393

A former business manager for late Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee was arrested Saturday in Arizona on charges including elder abuse, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.Keya Morgan faces felony charges of false imprisonment and grand theft from an elder and a misdemeanor charge of elder abuse, police said in a news release.A warrant had been issued for Morgan's arrest earlier this month following an elder abuse estate investigation that began in March 2018.Bail has been set at 0,000 and Morgan is expected to be extradicted to Los Angeles, police said.CNN has reached out to an attorney for Morgan.Among other things, Morgan is accused of collecting money from business transactions -- like autograph signing sessions in May 2018 that totaled more than 2,000 -- and not transferring the money to Lee.Lee died in November 2018 at age 95.His estate was worth more than million, but no one had clear authority to act on Lee's behalf, police said."Morgan exerted his control and influence over Lee," police said in the news release.Morgan also is accused of falsely imprisoning Lee when he took Lee from his Hollywood Hills home to what police described as a "secured Beverly Hills condominium" in the late night hours in June 2018.Police said Lee was "removed from Morgan's control" later that month when he was arrested by LAPD for making fake 911 calls in May 2018. Police said Morgan made the calls in order to make Lee believe he was in danger.Lee had a restraining order against Morgan Morgan reportedly became close to Lee after the death of his wife, Joan Lee, in 2017.Before his death, Lee was granted a temporary restraining order against Morgan that banned him from abusing, harassing or contacting Lee and required him to stay at least 100 yards away from him.At the time, Morgan denied the allegations."I have taken great care of Stan Lee for the past many years, and have never had a problem directly with Stan. I have a fantastic relationship with him for the past many years as he has stated countless times on the record and I literally saved his life once," Morgan told TMZ in June 2018. "I will 100% prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the allegations against me are false."Lee was the creator of dozens of iconic comic figures, including Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man and Black Panther. 2339

A day after David Ortiz was flown to Boston to recover from a gunshot wound, police in the Dominican Republic are working to find out why the legendary former Red Sox slugger was attacked in his native country.Ortiz, 43, was being treated Tuesday at Massachusetts General Hospital, two days after he and a friend were shot at a nightclub in Santo Domingo. The Red Sox, for whom the retired athlete starred for years as he endeared himself to fans across New England, sent a plane to collect him Monday after he had surgery in the Dominican Republic.Ortiz was shot in the back, and "the bullet went through his stomach," Felix Durán Mejia, a spokesman for the Dominican Republic National Police, told CNN.Before he was flown to the United States for further treatment, he was treated in his homeland for bleeding in his liver and had portions of his intestines and gallbladder removed, said Leo Lopez, his media assistant.Ortiz's condition was serious Monday, but he was stable enough to be flown to Massachusetts, said Sam Kennedy, the Red Sox president and CEO.One suspect is in custody, and investigators are looking for at least one other man in connection with Sunday night's shooting, police said. The reason for the shooting wasn't immediately clear. Ortiz, who was awake after surgery, does not know the man being held or why he was shot, and he's confident it was not a robbery attempt, Lopez said Monday.Dr. Jose Abel Gonzalez, who assisted in Ortiz's surgery in the Dominican Republic, said during a press conference Monday that the former ballplayer asked to see his family as soon as he opened his eyes."He finds himself in a good state of mind," Gonzalez said. The doctor also said that they hope Ortiz's recovery "will be the shortest possible," and that he expects Ortiz will return to life the "same as before" following recovery."On behalf of the Ortiz family, David Ortiz's work team, I want to thank the press but especially this medical team," said Ortiz's father, Leo.Video shows gunman open fireOrtiz and his friend Jhoel Lopez, a television host, were shot Sunday night at the Dial Bar and Lounge in the Dominican Republic's capital.Surveillance footage from the club shows an area of packed tables. Clubgoers are drinking, mingling and fiddling with their phones when a shooter approaches from the top of the screen, a short video clip shows.Only a shooter's legs are visible when a shot is fired and apparently hits a seated Ortiz in the back. Ortiz slumps to his left and falls out of his chair. Frightened bystanders knock over chairs as they flee.Ortiz's agent, Fernando Cuza, who has seen the video, confirmed to CNN that the man who falls from his chair is Ortiz.Jhoel Lopez was also shot, according to his wife, Liza Blanco. His condition was stable Monday, Blanco said, according to CNN affiliate Telesistema."They were both on their backs. It was very fast. He doesn't remember much because he was also in shock from the bullet wound," Blanco told reporters in Spanish. One suspect is in custody, and another is on the looseOne suspect is being held after bystanders captured him, and another man is on the loose, Dominican Republic authorities say.Eddy Vladimir Féliz García and the second man arrived at the Dial nightclub Sunday on a motorcycle before one of them eventually opened fire, police said. They tried to drive away after the shooting, but the motorcycle fell to the pavement, police said.A crowd attacked Féliz García and handed him over to police, while the second man fled, police said. The suspect was treated at Hospital Dr. Dario Contreras in Santo Domingo and is now in custody, police said.Féliz García has a 2017 drug charge and lives in Las Caobas, West Santo Domingo, police said.Santo Domingo's Ministry of Interior and Police announced a "provisional closing" of the Dial Bar and Lounge on Monday after the weekend shooting. The ministry's Control of Alcoholic Beverages program initiated the closure. The club has three days to give its account of what happened as police investigate the shooting, the ministry said. After a police officer's ID card was shared on social media implicating him in the crime, the Dominican Republic National Police denied any agents were involved."Our institution has no link to the event which occurred in the club Dial in the Venezuela Avenue, yesterday Sunday," the National Police said in a statement.Beloved in BostonOrtiz, also known as Big Papi, was reared in Santo Domingo and made his Major League Baseball debut in 1997.The first baseman and designated hitter played 20 seasons before retiring in 2016. While Ortiz's major league career began with the Minnesota Twins, he is best known for his 14 seasons in Boston as the Red Sox's designated hitter. 4756

A confluence of factors led to 52 people being shot, 10 fatally, in Chicago over the weekend, including gangs, drugs, an ineffective justice system and a season of hot weather that often ushers bloodshed into the city, the police chief said Monday."Despite the investments and progress in safety, weekends like this remind us all of the challenges that we face and that they are complex and profound," Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson told reporters. In addition to seeing gangbangers settle conflicts with firearms, officers in the northern part of the city witnessed "tensions related to the open-air drug market that's occurring on the West Side," Deputy Chief Al Nagode said. After some of the gang violence on the West and South sides spilled into other neighborhoods, Johnson said, police increased patrols to stave off chances for retaliation. Police seized 92 guns, doubled the confiscations for a normal weekend, and made 18 gun-related arrests, the chief said.Johnson calls out courtsYet despite the Chicago Police Department's efforts -- which includes planting department brass among patrol teams -- Johnson said his officers need help from the courts and the community, especially during the summer months in which the city typically turns so violent. That Johnson's commanders were nearby when some of the shootings occurred -- one district commander was half a block away when someone was shot on Central Park Avenue -- demonstrates how brazen the gunmen are, the superintendent said."We cannot -- can't -- do this without the support of the community or a unified criminal justice system that keeps gun offenders out of our neighborhoods," Johnson said. "We know who a lot of these people are, and how do we know that? Because we keep arresting them ... so until we hold violent offenders accountable the way that they should be, we're going to continue to see this."He said half of the people arrested on gun charges are back on the street within a week. Asked to provide a breakdown of that figure, Johnson urged reporters to research it for themselves. His message, however, was clear: the Chicago Police Department is doing everything it can, but it needs the city to embrace an "all hands on deck" approach that includes residents, business leaders and community groups to do their parts, he said.'Accountability Mondays'The violent weekend came as the department announced Saturday that crime was down 9% in the first five months of 2019, compared with the same period last year.A statement released early Saturday said murders were down 7% and shootings were down 13% from January 1 through May 31, compared with 2018.There were 186 homicides through May 31, compared with 200 in the same period last year, according to a CPD statement.
