BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- China and Cuba here on Tuesday celebrated the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties at a reception.Chinese and Cuban government officials as well as people from various circles attended the reception held in the Cuban embassy in China.Cuba is the first Latin American country to forge diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of China, in 1960, said Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo when addressing the reception.China and Cuba have always supported and helped each other in the past fifty years, Dai said, highlighting their fruitful pragmatic cooperation in various areas.Dai said that the continuous consolidation and development of China-Cuba friendly relations is in the interests of the two nations and their people.China cherishes its friendly and cooperative ties with Cuba and would like to further deepen the traditional friendship, boost mutual beneficial cooperation and bring benefits to their people, Dai said.Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, vice president of the Council of Ministers of Cuba, said that the establishment of Cuba-China relations is of historic significance.The last fifty years have witnessed the close contacts of Cuba-China state leaders, increasing friendship of their people and expanding areas of pragmatic cooperation, Cabrisas said.Cabrisas added that Cuba is willing to continue advancing its friendly relations with China.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 8 (Xinhua)-- The tenth tropical storm this year might strike southeast China Thursday night or Friday, bringing waves as high as six meters, said local flood control officials Wednesday.The storm could make landfall in the coastal areas between eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian Provinces, said Guangdong Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in a statement.The storm was tracked at 21 degrees north latitude and 119.4 degrees east longitude in the South China Sea at 6 p.m. For the next 12 hours, it is expected to move westward at a speed of 10 to 15 km per hour, said the statement.Further, the storm was packing wind gusts of 72 kilometers per hour near its center at 6 p.m. Torrential rains of 30 to 80 mm are expected in central and eastern Guangdong if landfall is made.Headquarters officials have asked fishing boats to stay clear of the waters east of the Pearl River estuary. Checks on reservoirs should also be beefed up, they said.

BAOSHAN, Yunnan, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from mudslides that hit a village in southwest China's Yunnan Province Wednesday has climbed to 24, while 24 others remained missing, officials at the rescue headquarters said Saturday.The mudslides occurred at about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday in a village of Longyang District in Baoshan City.Experts said the area is prone to landslides and it is recommended to permanently remove its population to safer areas, said Zhao Maoqi, vice head of Longyang District Government.Authorities will soon begin to select a site and work on a relocation plan. Local residents are expected to move into new houses early next year, said Zhao.Up to 40,000 cubic meters of debris came crashing down on the village, trapping 71 people from 21 families.An initial investigation blamed the tragedy on loose dirt and rocks sitting atop a steep slope that had been soaked by rain for about 10 days.

BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks last Friday with top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Il in Changchun, capital city of northeast China' s Jilin Province.Kim, general secretary of the Worker' s Party of Korea (WPK) and chairman of the DPRK National Defense Commission, paid an unofficial visit to China from August 26 to 30 at the invitation of Hu, also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).Hu said that at present, China and the DPRK are increasing vigorous exchange and cooperation in various fields, among various departments and between provinces along the borders. The two sides have maintained close communication and coordination on issues of the Korean Peninsula and the region.Hu said China is ready to work with the DPRK to carefully safeguard and develop friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries.During the talks, Hu put forward three proposals for further strengthening relations between the CPC and the WPK and between the two countries.Firstly, the two sides should maintain high-level contact, which is of great significance to continuously pushing forward the development of the China-DPRK links. Leaders of the two sides should continue to maintain regular communication in various forms.Secondly, the two sides should advance trade and economic cooperation. Expanding and deepening mutually beneficial and win-win trade and economic cooperation is in the basic interests of the two peoples.
