SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday that it received .5 million in federal funding to support housing vouchers to unsheltered military veterans. The county will use the ,520,346 grant to issue 175 housing vouchers to veterans throughout the county. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded the grant to the county HHSA through its Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program, which supports rental assistance, drug and alcohol counseling and financial education for veterans and their families."This grant is good news for our unsheltered veteran population," said HHSA Housing and Community Development Services Director David Estrella. "The funds will secure a stable place to live for men and women in our community that have sacrificed so much."FACING IT TOGETHER: On the edge of homelessness in San DiegoHUD also awarded a VASH grant of nearly .8 million to the San Diego Housing Commission earlier this week. Both grants will help local agencies find homes for some of the county's homeless population of 8,102 -- one-tenth of which are veterans.Residents can apply for the vouchers at sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/sdhcd/rental-assistance/overview.html or by contacting the county at 877-478-5478. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate urged prosecutors Friday to take a zero-tolerance stance on predatory scams involving fraudulent checks, particularly amid the COVID-19 pandemic when people may be especially susceptible to fraud. In a letter sent Friday to California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, the councilman suggested removing the possibility of prosecuting Penal Code 476 -- which makes creating or passing a fake check a crime -- as a misdemeanor, increasing the fine amount and maximum jail sentence for those found guilty, and assigning additional Department of Justice resources to investigate check fraud complaints. The councilman wrote that scams in the form of fake check deposits "are becoming widespread in Southern California and are causing our most vulnerable to lost thousands of dollars they cannot afford."Cate said one such fraudulent check was recently received by one of his staff members, which appeared authentic and bore the name of a "legitimate financial institution."He said he worried that with high unemployment rates amid the pandemic, people would be more likely to fall prey to scams of this sort."Taken as a whole, these measures will send a clear message to those who would attempt to prey on the most vulnerable and susceptible in our society that California stands with consumers and will not tolerate this fraudulent conduct," Cate wrote.A copy of Cate's letter, which features examples of a fraudulent check and typical accompanying letter from a supposedly legitimate company, can be viewed at https://www.sandiego.gov/sites/default/files/predatory_check_scam_enforcement.pdf. 1650

Chase D. Sweetwood, 18, was among those killed in the July 30 maritime training mission when the vehicle they were in took on water and sank.Family members say the Portland resident was born in San Diego and grew up in Chula Vista, and died one day before his 19th birthday.Sweetwood was honored during a Friday morning funeral that included military honors and a procession from the Patriot Guard Riders.Eight Camp Pendleton-based Marines, including Sweetwood, and a Navy sailor died in the mishap. Seven other members of the crew survived.Their remains were recovered after a two-day search, then flown earlier this month to Dover Air Base in Delaware for preparation for burial, with Sweetwood returned to San Diego on Thursday.A GoFundMe page created by Sweetwood's aunt Niki Stockdale, which has nearly quadrupled its ,000 goal, can be viewed at https://www.gofundme.com/f/funeral-and-travel-fees-for-tiana-sweetwood.The amphibious troop-transport vehicle was en route to a waiting ship during a maritime training mission about 80 miles west of Encinitas when it foundered for unknown reasons about 5:45 p.m. July 30, according to Lt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate rose to 3.3% in June, the first increase in the rate since March, according to data released Friday by the California Economic Development Department. The county's unemployment rate rose from an adjusted 2.7% in May to 3.3% in June. The unemployment rate had steadily declined for much of the year's first half, save for a one-tenth increase from 3.5% in February to 3.6% in March.3.3% in June. Despite the unemployment rate increase, the county's total nonfarm employment increased by 7,100 jobs, from 1,510,200 in May to 1,517,300 in June. Month-over-month farm employment stayed steady at 9,000. Multiple industriesshowed month-over-month job gains in the thousands, according to EDD data. The leisure and hospitality industry added 3,400 jobs from May to June, the most of any industry in the county. Much of that increase, per the EDD, was due to businesses like casinos and hotels bulking up their staffs for the summer. The construction, government and manufacturing industries also showed month-over-month gains of more than 1,000 jobs.Despite the month-over-month increase, the county's unemployment rate remains below last year's June rate of 3.6%. Nonfarm industries added 25,700 jobs from June 2018 to last month while farm employment dipped year-over-year from 9,700 to 9,000.The professional and business services and educational and health services industries added 8,000 and 7,400 jobs, respectively, far and away the most in the county year-over-year. Construction, manufacturing, leisure and hospitality and government jobs each increased by 2,400 jobs or more as well. The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce suggested the data underscore the strength of the county's technology sector."The economy continues to get stronger in large part because of San Diego's continued recognition as a technology hub,'' said Sean Karafin, the chamber's vice president of policy and economic research. ``The regional leadership in tech supports other industries such as healthcare, which continues to lead the country in using advanced technologies to improve service.''The trade, transportation and utilities, information and financial industries lost a combined 4,200 jobs year-over-year, the only industries to show negative growth. The trade, transportation and utilities industry lost the most, according to the EDD, dropping 2,800 jobs from June 2018 to last month. Statewide unemployment remained at 4.2 percent in June, unchanged from the state's rate in April and May 2019 as well as May and June 2018. Nationwide, unemployment rose to 3.7% in June, up from 3.6% in May and April and down from 4% in June 2018. 2699
