SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A "Day of Service" around Mission Bay will honor Maruta Gardner, the woman killed by a drunken driver while she was painting over graffiti in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach.Half a dozen service projects will take place around the bay all day Friday, Nov. 3."She was just a firecracker," said Dawn Reilly, one of the organizers with Beautiful MB. SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - The office of District Attorney Summer Stephan will soon have a new tool to better document injuries to victims of domestic violence. Her office announced on Tuesday, May 7 that 35 cameras will be purchased to aid in investigations, thanks to a ,000 grant from a California Office of Emergency Services.According to Stephan, these cameras can produce high-quality photos, which will then assist how evidence is presented in court. "These cameras can help us preserve and document evidence -- including evidence of strangulation -- which is predictive of homicide, and allows us to move forward with prosecutions and fight this persistent crime in San Diego County," said Stephan.According to a recent crime report from the San Diego Association of Governments, in 2017 there were more than 17,000 domestic violence incidents reported in San Diego County. Stephan said there has been a 20% increase in the number of domestic violence cases submitted to the District Attorney's Office over the last five years. Plus, the District Attorney's Family Protection Division has 21 pending murder cases. 11 of those cases involve the murder of an intimate partner. In addition to the new cameras, Stephan's office is currently working on nine other initiatives to bring awareness to and combat domestic violence. These initiatives include a new countywide strangulation protocol, forensic exams, and recognizing the link between homelessness and domestic violence. 1508

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A broken fire hydrant sent thousands of gallons of water gushing into the air Friday, damaging home on the 5100 block of Mariner Drive, near Otay Mesa.  The home received flood damage on the first floor of the house, as well as the yard. The cars in the driveway were drenched as well.  Water was gushing from the broken hydrant for nearly 20 minutes, according to the homeowner, Gary Birtwell.  "It was coming in through the backdoor," Birtwell said. "We had about 6 inches of water in the back yard that basically filled up above the door. And it was coming in through a closed window on the side of the house. We had water that came in through the ventilation." A neighbor's security video captured what appears to be a white SUV pulling into the curb then hitting the hydrant. Water begins gushing, and the SUV takes off.  Police officers took the neighbor's security video from the scene and were looking for more footage of the incident. 1015

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former Border Patrol agent was sentenced Wednesday for trying to smuggle drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border while on duty in 2016.Noe Lopez, 37, of Chula Vista, was sentenced to 70 months in prison for attempting to smuggle methamphetamine and cocaine in exchange for cash. He pled guilty to the charges in June 2017.Investigators say the former Border Patrol agent agreed to pick up backpacks containing the drugs from the north side of the border while on duty. Undercover DEA agents used substances resembling drugs in the backpack drops.RELATED: Border Patrol agent arrested in North San Diego County on drug , weapons chargesIn a conversation with an undercover agent, Lopez discussed the area known as "Goat Canyon" as a preferred location, according to investigators, saying "Honestly, the thing is that there aren’t—there aren’t any cameras. Nothing, nothing, nothing."At times, investigators said Lopez switched shifts with another agent to be in a preferred area for a drop.Lopez would load the backpacks in his Border Patrol vehicle and deliver what he thought were narcotics after work in exchange for thousands of dollars, according to the charges.RELATED: Border Patrol agent found not guilty on murder charges, hung jury on two lesser charges"This is a fitting sentence for a law enforcement agent who, instead of policing drug traffickers, joined them," U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman said in a release. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A dog named Roadrunner was spotted on camera escaping a coyote in an incident that’s happening more than ever before, according to the Helen Woodward Animal Center. The shelter’s veterinarians got a call from neighbors in Vista last month. One of the residents saw a small dog repeatedly on the run from coyotes in the Creekside and Brengle Terrace areas. Neighbors kept in touch through NextDoor as many of them tried to lure the dog to safety. Babs Fry, whose nonprofit “A Way Home For Animals” helps rescue pets, was able to save Roadrunner. She brought the dog to the Helen Woodward Animal Center for a free checkup. “We were concerned that Roadrunner may have been bitten and would require Rabies shots and months of downtime, but he was one of the lucky ones who managed to escape without incident,” said Animal Health Supervisor Madison Hughes. Roadrunner was treated for malnourishment, and skin and flea issues, shelter officials said. Fry took him home for a full recovery and will start interviewing potential adopters next week. Roadrunner’s story is increasingly common, according to Helen Woodward Animal Center officials. The shelter has received more reports of coyote attacks and the deaths of pets than ever before. The increase in coyote encounters may be due to last year’s fires, seasonal drought, heat, and recent housing development, shelter officials said.
