SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Police officer escaped injury when a driver reportedly tried to run him over Sunday morning.The incident happened around 1 a.m. near the intersection of F and Sixth Streets in the Gaslamp district.The officer was able to jump off his bicycle, which was dragged beneath the suspect’s vehicle. Police say the driver ditched his car and fled the scene.Police said Sunday that they are still searching for the suspect.No description of the suspect or suspect vehicle were given. 514

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A woman involved in a fiery multi-vehicle crash in the College Area on Wednesday died several hours after being taken to the hospital.Casey Diane Hargis, 22, was pronounced dead at UCSD Medical Center on Thursday morning, after a vehicle slammed into the Ford Fusion she was in as it was stopped at an intersection the night before.Hargis and the driver, a 22-year-old woman, were both taken to the hospital suffering from second- and third-degree burns on more than 70% of their bodies, along with internal bleeding.RELATED: Several hurt in multi-vehicle crash at College Area intersectionHargis died of vascular injuries from pelvic fractures, according to the county medical examiner's report.The condition of the driver has not been officially released.Wednesday, a 63-year-old man was driving in his Mercedes when he suffered an unknown medical issue and slammed into the back of the Ford that Hargis was traveling in at 70th Street and El Cajon Blvd.The force of the crash pushed both vehicles into the opposite lanes of El Cajon Blvd, where they were struck by three other vehicles, causing the Ford to ignite and leaving the women trapped inside before witnesses could pull them from the vehicle.The Mercedes driver was taken to the hospital for treatment, but his condition wasn't immediately released. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego nurse who cares for "the sickest of the sick" babies will be honored Sunday for her extraordinary character.Around Rady Children's Hospital, Linda Black is known for her Scottish accent and knack for writing poems."Remember my fingers remember my toes, Remember my eyes so big and so brown, Remember the wind making my whole face frown," she read from one of her poems. This one was written for a baby she cared for who did not survive.She's worked at the hospital for 12 years and always knew she was a caretaker."I wanted to be a nurse because my grandmother had multiple sclerosis and she had several strokes, I used to help my aunt look after her," she said.She is the primary caretaker for one baby at a time. Sometimes the baby is there for weeks, sometimes for months. She found the silver lining in traumatic times, writing poems for the families tailored to their little angels, "basically saying to the families thank you for giving me the honor of looking after your child and your child made an impact on my life."She hopes the poems bring back positive memories for families in a dark time. The families overwhelmed with gratitude, often hugging her. One family whose child survived used her poem as a bucket-list and would send Black photos each time they checked something off the list.When she started writing poems for those who didn't make it, she was worried about the impact. Black was reassured when she ran into a family at a party. She cared for their baby and hadn't seen them since their baby passed. "On her phone was a picture of the grave and on the grave was the poem, it made me realize how my words meant so much," she said tearfully.Sunday she'll be honored at the March of Dimes Signature Chef's Gala for her extraordinary character."If we get donuts we're really excited. You know, donuts and bagels are the biggest gift for us, sometimes chocolate, but to get an award and to get recognized by someone who's outside of my unit it's absolutely amazing, just wow!" SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Scripps Ranch woman did a double take when she found a mailbox post knocked down, the biggest shock came two days later.Last Thursday afternoon, Elizabeth Spelce came out of her along Cypress Valley Drive and saw it: A wooden post with her mailbox and three others was lying on its side, split apart just above the concrete."Disbelief. Stood there for a good minute and stared," said Spelce.At first she thought the culprit was the wet, windy weather. Two days later, she took a closer look and realized the wood was not rotted and wasn't so sure about her wind theory. She then assumed it might have been some bad driver or teen driver, so she decided to look at her Ring doorbell video."It was a little shocking," said Spelce.In the video, a mail truck is seen pulling alongside the curb, before running right into the post and toppling the mailboxes. The postal carrier backs up the truck, pulls forward, and soon after, reaches down and delivers the mail. The truck then drives off, apparently resuming its route."There was no note. No nothing. Just a big mystery," said Spelce.Spelce says the postal carrier added to the mystery when she talked to a neighbor. "She says, 'by the way, your mailboxes are knocked over ... Gosh, I can't imagine how it happened,'" said Spelce.Remember how she continued to deliver the mail after the mailboxes were knocked over? "She was pretending she delivered the mail and then it happened ... It's very disappointing," said Spelce.Her toppled post has since been replaced by her HOA. Spelce filed a complaint with the Postal Service. She's doesn't want the mail carrier to lose her job, but hopes she'll finally take responsibility. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Midwife is living her dream of opening her own birth center, helping minority women.We met Nikki Helms in July when her GoFundMe was off the charts, raising more than 1,000.She had been a licensed midwife for about a year and wanted to open a birth center. Fast forward to December and her dream is coming true."We've got signage and I stood at the foot of my stairs and cried about that," Helms said filled with gratitude. The community has continued to wrap their arms around her mission."It's really just been amazing and overwhelming, and I feel so blessed," she said wiping a tear from the corner of her eye. "And so grateful and I get teared up every time I start talking about it because it gives me the opportunity to go care for families and you know it just blows my mind."Since July she's raised another ,000 and packages keep arriving on her doorstep with items for the birth center.Her mission is to support women through childbirth and beyond.
