FORTVILLE, Ind. — A central Indiana superintendent gave students some fun "assignments" to complete on the first snow day of the year. With the institution of virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, many families thought snow days to be a thing of the past for students. But when snowfall led to messy roads across parts of Indiana, there were still several dozen schools that chose to either delay or cancel classes.Dr. Jack Parker, Superintendent at Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation sent a letter to parents canceling in-person learning in favor of virtual learning — but not the type of virtual learning typically seen amid the pandemic.The note to parents went on to give two assignments that included playing in the snow and throwing snowballs."Students will use the scientific process in planning appropriate clothing to remain warm and dry while spending time outside. Once the hypothesis has been identified, and appropriate attire has been secured, students will be expected to test their theory by going outdoors and playing in the snow," Parker's note read. "Step two of this assignment will be to practice the skills of estimation and measurement when throwing snowballs at one another while maintaining a minimum of 6' of distance with others outside of your household. When being with said snowball, students are expected to practice their social skills and to use their good words."He even gave students a chance to earn some extra credit. "Extra credit can be earned by helping to shovel sidewalks and/or driveways," Parker wrote.And of course, students who aren't feeling well were given an alternate assignment to complete."Students who are not feeling well will be expected to complete the alternative assignment of resting indoors and drinking plenty of fluids," the letter read. 1822

Florida Gov. Ron Desantis signed a bill into law Wednesday requiring school districts and charter schools to increase the minimum base salary for full-time classroom teachers to at least ,500.Previously, Florida was ranked 26th in the country for beginning teacher pay. Now, it's among the top five, DeSantis said."I think its definitely going to keep a lot of teachers in the profession and also motivates new ones to come into it," said Garrett Kent, a seventh-grade math teacher at Oak Hammock K-8 School in Port St. Lucie.Kent said the state's new benchmark for teacher pay is a dream come true."It's life-changing," said Kent. "I mean, most teachers don't join for the money, but this just adds to the motivation to help educate the students."State Rep. Toby Overdorf, R-Palm City, whose district covers Martin and St. Lucie counties, was one of several authors of the bill.He said the money is now in place for school districts to negotiate with teacher's unions."The reality is that this is laid out, not only as a benchmark, ,500, but also, it's great recognition and allowing those individual school districts to make a choice with their teachers as to what kind of raises they're going to be getting," said Overdorf.Overdorf said districts that already have a starting pay higher than ,500 will also likely see an increase and that the state of Florida is now in an excellent position to bring the best teachers back."Some of the best and brightest have gone to teach elsewhere because, frankly, they weren't able to get that living salary that recognizes the job that they do," said Overdorf. "Florida has now laid that down. We're going to be able to do that, and we're laying out those opportunities."Kent agreed."This will definitely change a lot of lives, especially the ones that are coming in," said Kent. Forget the shirt and shoes; no service for people on horseback at Starbucks in Anthem, Arizona. A Valley girl is frustrated after trying to ride her horse through the drive-thru when the barista said nay. Aspen Cline had seen internet videos of others riding their horses through the Starbucks drive-thru and decided that's what she wanted to do for her birthday. Instead, she and her horse, Scout, were shut down by the barista who apparently wasn't into horsing around. "We weren't given a reason, just, "we can't take your order," said Aspen. "My friend and I were going to get frappuccinos for us and a cup of whipped cream for the horses." A Starbucks spokesperson told us, officially, their drive-through is for cars only. He said that policy is for animal, rider and employee safety. But, he also added that the horses caught the barista off guard and with a little-advanced notice next time they'll find a way to serve all creatures."We support Starbucks because they're very accepting," said Tandy Cline, Aspen's mom. "So we were kind of disappointed we got thrown to the side from such a great company."  Tandy said they would definitely be reaching back out to Starbucks to see if they can arrange a better experience for Aspen. 1297

Following the CDC's recent No Sail Order extension , cruise lines say they'll not only create a bubble, but they'll test everyone who steps onboard. The tourism industry has been hit hard by the pandemic, and industry leaders say people are ready to take their coronavirus precautions and set sail.“We’ve been out of California, we’ve done all the Mexican, Caribbean, Bahama, Alaska, Hawaii, we’re planning on Panama Canal next year. After that we want to go to Europe and do a riverboat cruise,” said Betsy Atwood, a passenger on 37 past cruises.When she's not "cruising,” Atwood calls Vassar, Michigan, home. She was onboard a ship last spring when cruise lines were ordered back home. Ever since then, she's been ready to get back out on the high seas.“They need to sail, they need to get them going. You’re safer on the ship then you are to the grocery store. They’re so clean to begin with and I know now they’re cleaner than they were before,” Atwood said.Cleaning is just one part of the broad plan to get passengers back said Joe Leon, vice president of field sales for Silversea in the Americas. Silversea in the Americas is the luxury arm of Royal Caribbean and its ships only carry 600 people on board, which is small by industry standards. Leon says the report details multiple focal points.“First is embarkation and screening,” Leon said. “That’s testing and how strict we are with crew and passengers and contractors.
