SAN DIEGO (KGTV)—A group of small business owners and employees in San Diego County say the new reopening guidelines released by California Gov. Gavin Newsom Friday won’t help them recover after months of struggling.“We were really hopeful, then once we actually got this new color-coding system, it’s the same as nothing really to a lot of small businesses,” said Angie Weber, co-owner of Cowboy Star Restaurant and Butcher Shop in the East Village. “25 percent for a lot of restaurants is not enough to operate with.”Under the latest guidelines, restaurants can offer dine-in service at 25 percent capacity or 100 people, whichever is fewer.“We’ve done the math and think we can have 55 people in our building at any given time,” she said.Weber could not provide outdoor dining and spent a lot of money to prepare her restaurant for safe, dine-in services.“We went above and beyond. We added UV germicidal lighting into our HVAC ducts; we’ve gone to touchless checks and menus, we added glass partitions between our tables,” she said.A group of business owners, general managers, and other employees joined San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond outside of the county administration building Monday to call for looser restrictions.Desmond has been pushing for the reopening of businesses and said they can’t survive with the current capacity limits.“Everybody behind me is suffering because of this. I can’t pay my rent with 25 percent,” said Thomas Hall, General Manager for The Grass Skirt. “When my staff was told they had to leave and I didn’t know when we were going to hire them back, it completely broke my heart.”While some say the capacity limitations make it difficult for businesses to recover after operating at a loss, others say their industries have been entirely left out of any reopening plans.“I own a small event business called McFarlane Promotions. We shut down all our business and events on March 15,” said Laurel McFarlane, a small business owner and the founder of San Diego Event Coalition.“We let go of staff, we took out a second mortgage on our house, borrowed from friends and families if we could. We scrambled to make financially for the last six months, only to find out last Friday that we have been completely disregarded and undermined. The event industry wasn’t even listed.”McFarlane said she’s a mother of four children and the sole provider for her family. She said 90 percent of her business events were canceled, and she’s been unable to work for nearly six months.“It’s time for our leaders to invite us to the table,” she said.While Desmond has been in favor of reopening businesses, others are concerned that this could cause another spike in COVID-19 cases across the county.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said in a Tweet, “My fear is that the breadth & speed of what we are doing could cause a spike in cases that would trigger us moving back to a higher tier and requiring additional closures. I would prefer a more cautious approach that gives us a higher probability of a smooth & steady recovery.”Businesses providing indoor services must have a sign-in sheet will customers will leave their name and phone number. Supervisor Fletcher said if there is an outbreak inside a business or entity, the list will help in notifying customers if they have been exposed to COVID-19. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Three healthcare-related offices were burglaries early Thursday morning, where criminals got away with cash and prescription pills. At 2:00 am, San Diego Police Officers arrived at the Cos-medic Inc. Plastic Surgery Clinic in Bankers Hill, to find a smashed glass window. They said burglars got away with an unknown amount of money. At 4:15 am, dispatchers sent officers to the Kaiser Permanente Pharmacy in Clairemont Mesa, after the front door was broken in. Nothing was taken. Just 20 minutes later, police said criminals shattered the back glass window at the Carmel Valley Pharmacy. The owners immediately contacted the local Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to notify that the burglars took 600 tablets of Adderall, worth up to ,000 in street value. "This is one of the drugs we see that are highly abused by high school and college students...What they perceive to be a study-aid," DEA Special Agent in Charge, Colin Ruane said. The Schedule-2 narcotic often lands in the hands of our youth, which can have deadly consequences. "In this country, we lose 70,000 people who die of drug overdoses every year," Special Agent Ruane said. "This is just another symptom of the major problem and the major addiction issue we have in the country. They wouldn't be stealing these drugs if there wasn't somebody willing to buy them."San Diego police said there appeared to be no connection between the burglary at the plastic surgery office and the others. However, after our inquiry, the Department said they are working with the DEA to look for a possible connection between the two pharmacy burglaries. They are also helping the owners get back on their feet."We will give them suggestions on additional security measures, make sure they are in compliance," Special Agent Ruane said. (KFTV) - Former NFL player Steve Weatherford is putting his best foot forward to help Feeding San Diego this holiday season.The Super Bowl Champion Punter donated more than ,000 to help fund a school pantry for a full month."I feel like it's an honor and a privilege to team up with Feeding San Diego and leverage my blessings to let them know we have some food for you and we also care," he said as Weatherford helped distribute food at Central Elementary on December 20th.Feeding San Diego's school pantry program runs distributions at 40 schools across the city. They focus on giving families fresh food, as opposed to processed packaged items.Weatherford says that's one of the reasons he was drawn to the program."Being in fitness and being a professional athlete, I understand you're only going to be able to perform as well as the fuel you put inside your body," he says.Weatherford also brought his daughters, Carney and Aurora, to help volunteer at the distribution."I've got five kids," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV/CNS) - Opening statements were delivered Thursday in the civil trial between NFL quarterback Drew Brees and a La Jolla jeweler who allegedly sold the football pro and his wife diamonds far above their actual value.Brees took the stand to describe the close relationship he says he had with the store owner. "He always talked about it as being an investment," said Brees. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of San Diego has a new challenge that promotes bike riding, exploring the community and supporting local businesses. The Better by Bike blog is website that features everything from bike routes, to bike repair tips, to features on local bike riders.Part of the new program is a scavenger hunt that takes riders through the mid-city area. It ends Aug. 30 and is a competition to see who can get the most points after visiting local businesses and answering questions. The challenges range from taking pictures of specific spots to describing murals painted by local artists. It uses the Scavify application. Winners will then be awarded prizes, including gift cards to local restaurants.Anisha Gianchandani is the Climate Advisor for the City of San Diego and said this is part of a bigger-picture project to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and make San Diego more livable.“So it’s really just a fun way to get outside safely, enjoy your neighborhood and support small local businesses,” she said, later adding that “when you slow down, you get to see so many parts of your neighborhood that you normally wouldn’t see in a car.”It also helps local businesses. Stores and restaurants had the chance to submit their locations to be part of the scavenger hunt, which brings foot traffic to the area.Juan Pablo Sanchez’s family owns Super Cocina, one of the stops on the scavenger hunt. They had a local artist paint a mural on their wall outside, and their question pertains to that art.“We want to encourage you to use these streets, to go through us, to see our culture, to see the people that live here,” said Sanchez.Rudy Vargas, a native to the City Heights area, has embraced the challenge, heading up the leaderboard. He said even though he is familiar with his home, he’s still learned new facts about his neighborhood.“It was a good way to revisit some of my favorite places in City Heights but also visit some places I didn’t even know existed,” said Vargas.Vargas said he first picked up a passion for riding bikes when commuting to SDSU as a student, and has since kept up the passion.“My hope is that we continue this culture change and we step away from our vehicles because like I said there’s no other feeling like it,” he said. 2286
