Mykehia Curry is going to be the first member of her family to go to college, but she needed a little help to get there. The Macon, Georgia, teen took out student loans to pay for her tuition and housing at Albany State University, but she didn't have money for some of the things she'd need for her first time living away from home.Curry's mom is on disability, so money has been tight. On Saturday, just days before she was scheduled to leave for school, she asked God for help."I wrote a note that said 'God please help me get the rest of my stuff for college,'" Curry told CNN. "Then I said 'Amen, I love you God' and I wrote my name and number."She tied the note to three helium balloons leftover from her grandmother's birthday celebration and let them go."When I was writing the note, I was just trying to reach out to God. I didn't know where it would land," she said. "I thought that someone would pick it up and call me and tell me they got it or just throw it in the trash."The balloons flew about 15 miles northeast and carried the note to Gray, Georgia. That's where Jerome Jones, a Baptist minister, found it. Jones also works for Georgia Power and spotted the balloons on Monday while he was out on a job."I saw something shiny and floating, so I walked over there and I got it and it was balloons with a note tied to it," Jones told CNN affiliate WMGT. "They floated all night and they landed right in my hands, I mean, practically."He called Curry and offered to buy what she needed."He said they would love to help me out," Curry said. "I was so shocked and surprised."Jones and another member of his church brought her a comforter and refrigerator on Tuesday and now she's on her way to Albany State to get moved into her dorm. She said she plans to keep in touch with Jones and let him know how she's doing at school.Curry will be studying nursing and hopes to get a job on campus in a couple of months after she gets settled in with her classes."I am very excited to meet new people and start my journey and a new chapter in my life," she said. "This is a big step for me." 2098

More than 20 states have set records in daily reported cases of COVID-19 in recent days, prompting concern that another surge in deaths and hospitalizations linked to the virus could be on the way.According to information from Johns Hopkins University, 22 states across the country — particularly in the Upper Midwest or Great Plains region — are seeing record increases in new COVID-19 cases. Among the states seeing the most dramatic spikes are Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. The cases in the upper Midwest may have been fueled by the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which took place in South Dakota between Aug. 7 and Aug. 16. At least one report has estimated that the rally may have led to the infection of more than 250,000 people.Since the day the rally began, the number of new cases in South Dakota has risen from about 90 a day to more than 700 a day, and deaths increased from about one a day to about 10 a day. It's an exponential rise that's been mirrored in North Dakota and surrounding states. The spike in cases in the Plains and the Midwest has fueled a new surge in case counts across the country. On Friday, Johns Hopkins says that the U.S. reported more than 69,000 new COVID-19 cases — the highest single-day total since late July.Health experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institute on Allergies and Infectious Diseases have warned that colder months would bring an increase of COVID-19 cases. With Americans moving activities indoors, doctors warn that it will be easier for the virus to spread.Across the country, more than 8 million people have been diagnosed with COVID-19, and more than 200,000 have died. Worldwide, 40 million people are confirmed to have contracted the virus and more than 1 million have died.Below are the 22 states who have recorded a record number of new COVID-19 cases in a single day in the past two weeks.AlaskaArkansasColoradoIllinoisIndianaIdahoIowaKansasKentuckyMinnesotaMissouriMontanaNebraskaNew MexicoNorth CarolinaNorth DakotaOhioOklahomaSouth DakotaUtahWest VirginiaWyoming 2063

Moderna is asking American regulators to allow emergency use of its COVID-19 vaccine. It says its final results show the vaccine is 94% effective. The drug maker says it had 196 COVID-19 cases so far in its study. It says 185 of those participants received the placebo, while 11 got the real vaccine. The 30 people who became seriously ill in the trial didn't get the vaccine.FDA advisors are expected to look at all the evidence on December 17. They'll be checking out Pfizer’s vaccine on December 10.Pfizer and Moderna's success with their COVID-19 trials could impact how vaccines are made in the future. It has to do with how they work. They use what's called messenger RNA (mRNA) technology. The virus' genetic code is injected into the body so it can instruct cells on what antibodies to produce. It hasn't been approved to be used in a commercial vaccine before.“In the future, it's clearly going to be tough to beat RNA vaccines for speed and that's a wonderful thing. Just this demonstration of how incredibly fast they can move has been great. How effective they can be, I think will depend on a particular disease,” said Shane Crotty, Ph.D. with the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.Crotty says the narrowest application for this vaccine technology in the future is a similar situation where there's a new emerging virus."The mRNA vaccine has been tried for other infectious diseases and they have been investigated for cancer. There's a whole area of trying to vaccine against cancer, which has kind of been an elusive target,” said Dr. Alessandro Sette with the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.A big question with an mRNA vaccine is how long its protection will last. While there is encouraging findings, there's no historical comparison to look at.A big thing experts say has helped with a vaccine is there has been a lot of money put towards manufacturing before we even knew it would work.Click here to learn more about mRNA vaccines. 1958
