OAK PARK, Mich. — The city of Oak Park, Michigan will host its annual Boo Bash Halloween event next Wednesday, but they are not allowing anyone to come as a clown.On the event page, the city says people can bring children in their favorite Halloween costumes, collect candy down the trick-or-treat street and enjoy cider and donuts. They also say that clown costumes are not allowed.Oak Park Recreation Director Laurie Stasiak told the Oakland County Times the ban stems from fear and anxiety over clowns for some children."In the past few years, many clown costumes have been given a very scary and evil look. Many scary and horror movies are centered around these types of characters. About three years [ago] there were national incidents in the news where people were dressing up as clowns and scaring people and in some cases assaulting them," she told the Oakland County?Times. One soldier has been killed and seven others have been injured after an explosion occurred during a training exercise at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.WTVD-TV reports that the explosion occurred when a vehicle rolled over. Reports originally indicated that as many as 15 soldiers had been injured.WTVD reported that Staff Sgt. Alexander P. Dalida, 32, of Dunstable, Massachusetts, died during a training exercise. According to to WRAL-TV, the soldiers were transported to a local hospital via medical helicopter. The idea is in it's beginning stages, no formal paperwork has been submitted to the city clerk. 10News spoke with her Wednesday and she said the developer, Zephyer Partners, has been talking with council members.Neighbors have already been hearing construction equipment hacking away at the remains of the drive-in that operated before the swap meet took over."When I was driving by and I saw you standing here I thought I need to find out because she probably knows more than I do," Neighbor Liz Lewellen said.She said the neighborhood has been wondering what could happen to the lot. Mayor Weiss told 10News the developer gave him this pitch, "n active sports complex, there would be a BMX track, a climbing wall, things like that, it would also have a hotel and then sports oriented retail." He also described a wave pool that mimics the Kelly Slater Surf Ranch in Fresno. The facility is state-of-the-art and perfect for competitions.The idea sparking interest in the community. Lewellen was shocked and excited when she heard."I love the idea that it's commercial coming in because this area desperately needs more restaurants more things," Lewellen said. With full hair, makeup and dresses, the two started reading to children about six months ago at libraries.The stories read have themes about love, compassion and inclusion.The program is called Drag Queen Story Hour.Jonathan Hamilt brought the program to New York from San Francisco, and it has spread across the country.“It's one of the most attended story hours of our libraries,” says Hamilt. “Every time we go to a branch, librarians are like, ‘Wow! This has exceeded the number of any other program that we've had.’”As you might expect, Hamilt says the children come with questions, asking about their hair and real name.Some questions are more challenging than others.“Are you a boy or are you a girl?
