Just ask Gary Swimpson."I have a 7-year-old grandson that can read better than me," he says, "it hurts. I'm 61 years old, I'm supposed to be reading to him, but I can't let that get me down. I have to keep pushing forward."Pushing forward is Gary's mantra. He exudes positivity, but it wasn't always that way. "As far as my background, where I come from, 'the hood' and all that, you know I made a lot of bad choices coming up and so I'm trying to do the right thing in life for the first time in my life." He says the hardest part of his journey has been having the strength to continue pushing himself to do it. "When you never read growing up and now you're in your fifties or sixties and you try it, it's a challenge."When Gary moved from Los Angeles to Oceanside, he decided it was time for a fresh start, beginning about a year and a half ago with the Oceanside READS Learning Center.Chelsea Genack Eggli, the literacy coordinator for Oceanside Public Library, said, "It takes a lot of courage and it takes a lot of strength to go back to school when somebody is older in life," she says.Before the pandemic, literacy tutors met with adult learners in person, one-on-one. Now they meet via Zoom."He was having a hard time seeing his growth. I saw it because when he came he wasn't reading at all, and then he read a chapter book," says Chelsea. Gary says, "It made me just feel so good," when he saw the numbers on an assessment showing his progress.Now, not only is Gary reading, he's also writing poetry for a contest --- an ode to Oceanside. When asked what he'd like to say to others who could benefit from the program, Gary says, "Well, we have always heard that it's never too late right? It's how much you believe in yourself." He goes on to say, "There's always a chance to get your life together as long as you're breathing. It worked for me and I'm really grateful, and anybody can do it. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — One person is presumed dead after going underwater as rescue personnel tried to save them.Oceanside Fire Department was called to rescue a person in the water near Oceanside Pier just after 3 a.m. Saturday, according to the department. A person was located clinging to a pylon.A rescue swimmer dove into the water to help the person, simultaneously while the person let go of the pylon and went underwater, OFD says.Rescuers continued to search the surrounding waters for the victim but were unable to locate them. Crews suspended searching the area for the individual after several hours Saturday. 633

Of all the campaign slogans for 2020, Allison Ali is following motherly advice from her childhood.“My Mama always said, ‘if you don’t vote, you don’t have a voice,’” she said. “So, it’s put up or shut up.”Ali is taking those wise words on the road and also taking voters to the polls for free.“It’s important to me, because everybody needs to be heard,” she said.This election season, Ali is one of hundreds of people working for the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America during a campaign called “Roll to the Polls.”“We have a real opportunity to impact the elections,” said NACA CEO Bruce Marks.Marks’ team has 100 vans in Atlanta and 50 more in Houston with a goal of getting 100,000 voters from their houses to their polling locations free of charge.“It is very emotional because we’ve been through a lot,” Marks said of these free rides. “We’ve seen the voter suppression and we’ve seen how people’s rights are taken away. ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Southern California is getting a new tool in the state's fight against wildfires. A new program, called Fire Integrated Real-Time Intelligence System launched September 1. The system uses a fixed-wing aircraft that can see through smoke using using infrared and radar sensors. The plane, according to the Orange County Fire Authority, provides real-time perimeter mapping and live, high definition video to support predictive spread modeling. “The State of California must shift strategies to address the constant crisis of wildfires – this is no longer a seasonal threat,” stated Assemblywoman Petrie-Norris. “I am proud to have partnered with the Orange County Fire Authority in securing .5 million in state funds for technology that will protect lives and property by giving first responders better, stronger tools to use against the threat of wildfires.”The UCSD WIFIRE wildfire spread modeling also projects where and how large the fire will before over a 6-hour time period. The model is built to adjust for successful suppression actions by fire crews. The pilot program is being made available in San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and Ventura Counties. 1211
