COVID-19’s disproportionate impact on people living with diabetes is a growing concern. The American Diabetes Association says nearly 40% of COVID-19 deaths have been from those with the disease, while 90% of the hospitalizations have been people with diabetes or other underlying conditions.“Diabetes was a health crisis and epidemic in this country before the pandemic, and what the pandemic has done really is shine a very bright light on an old problem,” said Tracey Brown, CEO of the American Diabetes Association.Brown has lived with diabetes for 16 years. She's worried about additional financial struggles brought on by the pandemic.Even before COVID-19, one in four people were rationing their insulin to get by.Brown says the current unemployment rate is higher among people with diabetes. So, the burden has only worsened for those that have lost health coverage because of job loss. The disease also disproportionately impacts people of color living in low income areas.Brown says even now in 2020, every 5 minutes, someone in the U.S. loses a limb because of complications from diabetes.“There are so many comorbidities that go along with this, which is another reason why I talk about the fact that if we want to address the wellbeing of Americans, and improve the wellbeing of Americans, you can't have that conversation without having a conversation about improving diabetes,” said Brown.Brown wants to make sure people with diabetes don't feel like they're alone right now. There's a page of resources available on their website, Diabetes.org. You can also call 1-800-diabetes if you're struggling. 1620

City commissioners in Portland, Oregon, voted to cut nearly million from the Portland Police Bureau's budget in response to concerns about police brutality and racial injustice. The cuts approved Wednesday are part of a city budget passed by the commissioners with a 3-1 vote. The police budget had stood at about 0 million before the commission action. The money saved by eliminating the gun reduction violence team, school resource officers and transit officers will be redirected to social service programs.Portland is the latest city to cut police funding. Thousands of protesters have filled the streets nightly for three weeks following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Two weeks ago, Minneapolis City Council voted to begin the process of dismantling its police department. The call to dismantle and defund police departments is among the reforms many activists as part of the Black Lives Matter movement have requested since Floyd's death. 980

Cleveland Police say a 16-year-old boy wound up in the ICU at Metro Health because his dad forced him to confront a bully.Police put a warrant out for 36-year-old Carlos Conner, wanted on a felony child endangerment charge.According to a police report, last week Conner forced his 16-year-old son to fight his bully on the street.“My nephew seen the guy who’s been bullying him for a year and a half and he jumped out the car,” said Conner’s sister, Cynthia Conner.Conner says the police report doesn't tell the whole story and that her nephew took it upon himself to fight the other teenager. Both are students at James Rhodes High School.“I think he did the parental, smart thing, let them fight and said ok, after the fight was over, said ok, the fight was over, took his child and took him to the hospital,” she said.Except, when the 16 year old arrived at the hospital, police say it was discovered he had bleeding in his brain and was taken to the intensive care unit. The bullying, according to Conner, started on social media. Her brother, she says, made numerous attempts to stop it, but the problem was never solved.“This has been going on for a year and half, you don’t think my brother could’ve forced him to get out the car a year and a half ago? Here, here he is, I’m going to bring you right to him, fight him. My brother’s not a bad guy,” she said.Conner claims this was in fact a dispute between her brother and his ex-wife who filed the police report.According to the police report, detectives did not get a statement from the 16 year old and have not yet identified the other teen involved. 1616

Companies can stop collecting employees’ payroll taxes starting Tuesday, September 1, after an executive order in early August gave workers a tax holiday. The deferral of payroll taxes applies to employees making less than 4,000 a year. Employees are taxed 6.2 percent that goes toward the Social Security Trust Fund and another 1.45 percent for Medicare. It’s a deferral because the payroll taxes are still due to the IRS by April 30, 2021, which they made clear in new guidance released last week with the US Treasury Department. What this means to employees: It depends on your employer. Starting September 1, employers can stop withholding taxes, but many business leaders have said they will not since the taxes will eventually be due. The decision is up to each company and is not required. If a company stops withholding payroll taxes, employees will have more money in their paychecks through the end of the year. Then on January 1, companies will need to withhold more from paychecks to collect all that is owed in April 2021.For employees making ,000 a year, the elimination of Social Security taxes would result in an extra per paycheck every two weeks. Assuming the employee has eight paychecks left in 2020, that would result in 2 in taxes deferred in 2020, which would be repaid in 2021. For employees making ,000 per year, those figures would be doubled. If an employee leaves their job before all of the appropriate taxes are collected, the guidance only states that companies can "make arrangements to otherwise collect the total applicable taxes from the employee."President Trump has stated he would “terminate” the tax if he was elected in November. However, the president does not have the ability to do that on his own. Abolishing payroll taxes requires an act of Congress. 1814

Congratulations to President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris. This election was hard-fought by both candidates and ultimately the voters chose them for the job. America now looks to you to lead our country and unite us for the common good.— Rep. Paul Mitchell (@RepPaulMitchell) November 7, 2020 315
