SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A La Jolla hardware store is being forced to remove their popcorn machine they say was used to give the buttery treat to customers for free over the last 25 years.According to a food inspection report, the Meanley and Son Hardware on the 7700 block of Girard was investigated for serving popcorn without a permit."Everybody has had fun with this until now, but we have to obey the law," said co-owner Bob Meanley. One of the store's owners says the inspection happened after someone complained.A customer reportedly saw another person reach into the popcorn machine barehanded."I’m sorry we can’t continue with the popcorn, but we’ll do it with everything else," added Meanley. In the report, the inspector said the small Gold Medal brand popcorn maker was seen in use and with “popped popcorn prepared.”The report forces the hardware store to stop making popcorn and to remove the popcorn machine from the building. If the shop wants to give away popcorn, according to the health department, they’ll have to go through the permitting process. A process which will also legally require that the store install three compartment sinks. The store says staff regularly cleaned the machine and refilled it with popcorn throughout the day for customers to enjoy. The hardware shop has an extensive history in La Jolla. The store was opened in 1948 when the niece of Ellen B. Scripps along with her husband and son established the business. 1507

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego K9 police officer rescued toddlers after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs Saturday morning. He said he heard the first call go out of a suicidal man with twin two-year-old girls driving with the intention of careening off the Coronado Bridge.Law enforcement tracked his phone to Sunset Cliffs where a SDPD lieutenant watched him drive off the cliff at a high rate of speed.SDPD K9 Officer Jonathan Wiese said the man had his daughters in his lap during the crash and the truck landed upside down on top of a rock, which would have killed the girls had they been in the back seat.Wiese said his goal once he saw the truck was to get down to the family and get them all to safety."I could see him and he had one of the girls in his arms, and I have a two-year-old daughter at home so I imagined, what if that was my wife and kid down there? You're not going to stand there on the cliff and watch it happen," he said.Wiese said his heart was pounding as he thought of a way to get down the cliff-side. Then he remembered he had a 100 ft leash for SWAT missions. He grabbed it, took off his gun belt and looped it around his waist, "and by then four or five other cops had shown up so I pretty much threw the end of the leash to them and then I said hang on and I just jumped off."He said with teamwork, they lowered him down to the rocks below, where he slid his way into the water and swam, fully clothed to the father. By that time, he had both toddlers in his arms.Wiese's next goal was to get them out of the water. He said the truck acted as a break from the surf while he gathered his thoughts, and a memory hit from his time in the Marine Corps. "They taught you how to do water safety rescues and I had a little flashback of okay grab him under the armpit and push him so I swam and held them above water," bringing them to shore. He noticed one of the girls was alert while the other was limp. He said he did some 'rescue breathing' while officers above got him a backpack with supplies. They used the backpack and leash to hoist both girls up to a waiting ambulance.Wiese said while he sat with the father, waiting for a helicopter to come hoist him up, the man said "he was going to die and the girls were coming with him."SDPD Police Chief David Nisleit said he believed Wiese saved the girls' life, and was proud of Wiese's heroic actions."That's probably the most heroic thing I've seen in my 32 years," he said.He reminded us Wiese is the Officer of the Year, honored for a long list of heroic acts, including helping arrest the suspected Chabad of Poway shooter. This all happening as police fall under the nation's microscope."I didn't do the job to be liked every day, I didn't do it to become rich, I did it because I want to be out there making a difference and helping people, as cliche as that might sound, but I was just glad I could be there," Wiese said referring to protecting those toddlers.During the rescue he said he was focused, but it does take an emotional toll, "you just do what you have to do, but after everyone was safe, it hits you and you just want to go home and hug your kids that's for sure."Nisleit said the girls were in the ICU, but are expected to make a full recovery. 3251

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new report from California State University, San Marcos, shows San Diego County's craft beer industry continued its uphill climb last year.In 2018, San Diego County saw its craft brewing family grow to a total of 155 independent craft brewers, bringing the region to a total of 202 operating brewery locations, the report revealed. The study was compiled by CSUSM, the school's Office of Business Research and Analysis, and San Diego Brewers Guild.Data did show that brewery openings slowed starting in 2017, but have rose slightly since. The majority of breweries are packed into Central San Diego, hosting 55% of craft breweries in the county, the report says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A priest in the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego was suspended Tuesday as church officials investigate allegations of sexual misconduct with a girl in the 1990s.Father Justin Langille, 65, initially faced the claim in the mid-1990s for an act which allegedly occurred with a female teenager earlier in the decade, according to a news release from the diocese. The case was examined in 1995 and 2002, but the diocese concluded that the allegation was unsubstantiated after Langille passed a polygraph test, church officials said.Last month, the case was brought before the diocese’s Independent Review Board as part of its process to review files about the sexual abuse of minors by clergy.“I felt strongly that even older, previously decided cases involving currently serving priests would benefit from being examined by the Independent Review Board,” said Bp. McElroy. “The voice of the laity needs to be heard on these matters and the independent board, with members that include attorneys, criminal investigators, psychologists and a clergy abuse victim, provides the diocese with exceptionally valuable guidance and expertise.”An investigator revealed significant new information that substantially undermined the credibility of Langille’s denials, the diocese said. Church officials did not provide details about the information. The diocese spokesperson did not have information about whether San Diego Police had been contacted. If the Independent Review Board determines the accusation is not credible, Langille may be returned to ministry, according to the diocese.Langille has not had a full-time assignment in the diocese since 2013, officials said. He has assisted on weekends at St. Therese and Ascension parishes in Del Cerro and Tierrasanta. The diocese said it encourages any victim of abuse by clergy to contact the Victim Assistance Office at 858-490-8353.The Diocese of San Diego serves 1.3 million Catholics in San Diego and Imperial Counties. 1999
