WILMINGTON, Del. – During a year-end address, President-elect Joe Biden warned that country is far from emerging from the coronavirus crisis.“Our darkest days in this battle against COVID are ahead of us, not behind us. So, we need to prepare ourselves and steel our spines,” said Biden in Wilmington on Tuesday. “As frustrating as it is to hear, it’s going to take patience and persistence and determination to beat this virus. We have a lot more work to do,” said Biden.Biden also took the chance to express sympathy for the many American families who are struggling financially and emotionally as they celebrate the holidays in isolation amid the global pandemic.“With over 320,000 lives lost to this virus, Jill and I send our prayers to all of you facing this dark winter with an empty seat at the dinner table where your loved one used to sit, talk, and laugh,” said Biden. “Our hearts go out to all of you who have fallen on hard times through no fault of your own, unable to sleep at night, weighed down with the worry of what tomorrow will bring for you and for your family.”Like for Thanksgiving, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is encouraging people to celebrate the end of year holidays at home with the people you live with. Gatherings with family and friends who do not live with you can increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19 or the flu.“Like we did over Thanksgiving, we all have to care enough for each other that we have to stay apart just a little longer,” said Biden. “I know it’s hard, but we have a long way to go.”Biden also encouraged Americans to continue taking the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus as the nation ramps up its vaccination efforts.“We need everyone to mask up, stay socially distant, and avoid large gatherings,” said Biden. “And we need to work in a bipartisan way. That’s the only way we’ll get through this.”Biden himself received his initial dose of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine on Monday, shortly after his wife did as well. He joined a growing list of officials who have publicly been vaccinated to show confidence in the vaccination process.During his remarks, Biden said he has “absolute confidence in the vaccine,” but the country is short on supply. He explained that vaccinating millions of people will be a logistical challenge.“Taking the vaccine from a vial and into the arms of millions of Americans will be the biggest operational challenge we’ve ever faced. It will take many more months for that to happen,” said Biden. “In the meantime, the pandemic rages on.”Early next year, Biden said he will put his plans for what’s to come before the Congress. He said we will need more help to fully distribute the vaccine, to reopen our schools, to help our front-line workers, and to make sure those struggling to make ends meet are taken care of.On his day in office, Biden says he will enact masking requirements, a new strategy on testing, and work on accelerated production of protective gear.Biden also discussed the recent cyber security breach against U.S. companies and federal agencies. She even sought out help from pest control workers on the property. She says they told her something shocking."He caught 1,052 [scorpions] and he said, that's not even half of them," Jones said.On top of the scorpions, we noticed more problems all across Jones's apartment.There was what appeared to be black mold in the bathroom, and more in the window sill in the living room. She pointed out brown water leaking from her refrigerator, and told us she got sick from using the tap water to cook. She now uses only bottled water. Jones said she had asked management to fix all of these issues, as well as the scorpions, but nothing has been resolved.So, our reporter walked into the office and asked for the manager.A woman sitting at the front desk went to get her, but about a minute later there was a major change in tone. That same woman told our crew there would be no interview. They gave us a number to call for a comment, but after calling and leaving a voicemail, no one ever returned our calls for answers.So, we took action and went above their head to get help for this woman. With a rising number of positive COVID-19 cases in Northeast Ohio and local government-imposed requirements to wear them in public places, it is safe to say that masks are here to stay for the foreseeable future. To help alleviate one particular annoyance of wearing masks, a North Ridgeville company is seeking a patent on its mask design that prevents the mask wearer's glasses from fogging.Larry Nolan, the owner of Versa-Flex Inc., filed paperwork with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic began, seeking a design patent for his anti-fog mask. Nolan, who has spent the better part of his adult life inventing and designing high-quality bags and carrying cases for the camera and film equipment, initially didn't want to make masks. However, he began to seriously consider the venture when a friend of his presented him with a problem."She said the biggest problem they have is their glasses fogging up," Nolan said. "It took me a minute and a half, seriously, a minute and a half and I said, 'that's not a problem. Seriously, that's not a problem.'" After coming up with the design for the three-part mask, which features a gasket-like top layer that extends over the nose and upper cheekbone, Nolan began sewing."You have a cotton-polyester layer. [There is] a filter in the center. And I have a cool mesh on the inside that helps make your breathing easier," Nolan said. Nolan is also working on a design that could incorporate an N-95 or P-95 mask.Versa-Flex is selling its three-layer masks on its website and through Etsy. The masks also come with a variety of different decals, including the United States Marine Corps, the Rocky River Pirates, Lakewood Rangers, and the North Ridgeville Rangers. The company also sells mask designs to look like the Cleveland Browns logo.The masks are made by hand and can be purchased from to .75."I have a hard time saying no. People say you have to say no or you're not going to make any money," Nolan said. "That's the problem, I don't know how to say no and I don't make any money." Nolan's first breakthrough product came in the early 1990s. It was a five-in-one reflector used by photographers and videographers. However, Nolan said the product's intellectual property was quickly stolen and taken to China where it could be mass-produced. The saga taught him a valuable lesson, he said."It's been a tough road," Nolan said. "Things just keep on changing. There is no such thing as a steady flow. Everything is a change. You have to adapt."Adapt, he did. Versa-Flex, which is a combination of the words versatile and flexible, has been a mantra of sorts for the company. Nolan has secured multiple contracts with the NFL, NFL Films, and HBO's Hard Knocks for different bags used to carry or conceal audio equipment needed for a television production."I don't see the numbers in my head. I don't. I see designs. I see ideas," Nolan said. "I don't sleep at night because all I do is think."Nolan, a disabled veteran, said his knack for inventing and tinkering came from his biological father, whom he shares a patent with for a blow-up toilet seat cushion. Nolan jokes about the absurdity of the product now. After high school, Nolan enlisted in the Navy, where he continued to invent."You see all this stuff that's on this aircraft carrier. They had to start from scratch. Everything on this carrier is an invention. Everything," Nolan said. "Everything you see in this space, somebody had to create it, design it, draw it, and get it off the ground. If it didn't work, they had to try the second time. It's perseverance. You can't give up you can't surrender."All of Nolan's products are made in the United States, using as many domestically made products as he can. His most recent purchase, a massive embroidery machine, was manufactured by a company in Solon. By having high standards for quality, Nolan said many of his products have lasted longer than the companies that purchased them."It takes just as much labor to make a crap product as it does to make a good one.
