It’s Saturday night service at Northview Church in Carmel, Indiana. As parishioners pack the pews, they start singing about the power of giving. Preaching from the pulpit, senior pastor Steve Poe focuses the night’s sermon on how small donations can have a big impacts.This Indiana-based church is truly helping their neighbors in need! Members of this congregation raised ,000 in donations and used that money to help pay off more than .6 million of medical debt for Indiana citizens.“That will have an impact on 2,500 people or more,” says Poe.With Poe's church buying 30 percent of all medical debt in seven different zip codes across greater Indiana, the pastor says this is financial rehabilitation through religion. In a few weeks, the families whose debts will be covered will receive letters. “What that does then, it will notify their creditors that their debt has been cleared, which gives them the opportunity to start again without this damaging debt," Poe says. "Without this debt hanging over their heads."Northview Church worked with the organization RIP Medical Debt to purchase debt at pennies on the dollar. Founder Craig Antico explains how it works, and why they don’t know the names of the people that they’ve helped. “RIP Medical Debt abolishes medical debt for the poor and those in hardship,” Antico says. “The way that we do it is we go and buy medical debt from either hospitals, doctors, or even the collector investors to buy the debt to make them nonprofit.”A study in the American Journal of Public Health found that medical debt contributes to two-thirds of bankruptcy filings. So, debt relief like this can be life changing. “I could not come up with any words; I was so caught off guard,” says Lisa Sole, who is a recipient of a Northview Church donation. Sole used ,500 dollars to cover medical bills and other debt.“When you are granted the gift of debt being taken away from you, the amount of stress that it relieves off of your body is so healing,” she says.With that kind of healing, Sole was inspired to pass it on and pay it forward, saying it’s truly better to give than receive. “It’s exciting to see the next person’s acceptance and how they’re excited compared to us and the feeling you get,” she says. 2266

Jackie Wilkinson recently picked up an unknown call at her home.Her cable company was showing on her caller ID, so Wilkinson did what she normally doesn't do with unexpected calls: she answered. "It appeared that Spectrum was calling, our provider for internet, phone and cable services, so I answered, " Wilkinson said.Other customers report receiving similar calls that show up as Cox, Comcast, Xfinity, Charter, Optimum, and others.The caller immediately offered to help lower her bill, so Wilkinson perked up."He asked, 'Do you want to save money?" Wilkinson said. "Naturally, in this day and age, who doesn't want to save money? So I said yes, and he said, 'Great, now tell me how much you are paying.'"But that last comment from the phone rep raised a red flag."These are questions I would think Spectrum would already know," she said. "They can see your billing price right there!"Who was really calling?When the caller then told her she could save money by signing up for a satellite TV service instead, Wilkinson realized it wasn't really Spectrum Cable on the line.Instead, it was a case of "spoofing," where a fake number shows on your caller ID.Scammers have been spoofing the numbers of the FBI and IRS for several years now and getting people to answer the phone that way. It was only natural they'd start pretending to be your cable company.We contacted Spectrum, and the company said it has other complaints about these calls.It recently sent out a warning to customers saying: "If an offer doesn't sound right, customers may ask the representative on the phone to validate they are an employee by looking up their account number. Spectrum representatives will always have an account number." Then call your company (at their customer service number on your bill) and ask if there is any such person working there.Wilkinson just wants to warn others."If you see your cable company calling, you think its important," Wilkinson said. "The phone number appears on your phone as if they are the cable company, so everything seemed legitimate up until the questions." But cable providers never call you to chat about lowering your bill or offering a discount. Larry Tesler, the computer scientist best known for inventing the “cut, copy and paste” commands, died Monday. JPMorgan Chase & Co. will no longer do business with coal companies and will restrict financing to companies that drill in the Arctic, the company announced Tuesday. The announcement came in tandem with the bank announcing it would extend 0 billion in financing to clean and renewable energy companies by 2025.
