Actor-comedian John Witherspoon, who memorably played Ice Cube’s father in the “Friday” films, has died. He was 77.Witherspoon’s manager Alex Goodman confirmed late Tuesday that Witherspoon died in Los Angeles. No cause of death was released. The actor had a prolific career, co-starring in three “Friday” films, appearing on “The Wayans Bros.” television series and voicing the grandfather in “The Boondocks” animated series. His film roles included “Vampire in Brooklyn” and “Boomerang,” and he was a frequent guest on “Late Show with David Letterman.”For many his most recognizable role was “Pops,” Ice Cube’s father in the stoner comedy “Friday” and its two sequels, a crude but affectionate father trying to guide his son to be better.“Life won’t be as funny without him,” Ice Cube said in a Twitter post late Tuesday, adding that he was devastated by news of Witherspoon’s death.Regina King, who appeared as Witherspoon’s daughter in “Friday” and also voiced both of his grandsons in the animated series “The Boondocks” called him her “comedic inspiration” on Twitter.Goodman referred to a family statement issued to the website Deadline that said the family was in shock over Witherspoon’s death. The statement says Witherspoon, who was born on Jan. 27, 1942, is survived by his wife, Angela, and sons JD and Alexander.JD Witherspoon tweeted that he was happy for all the great times he and his dad had together.“We’d roast each other like homies more than Father & Son, and I really liked that. He was my best friend & my idol,” JD Witherspoon posted. “Love U Dad...I’ll miss u.” 1605
A third horse died in three days at Santa Anita when it collided with another horse during training hours on Sunday. Tikkun Olam, a 4-year-old gelding trained by Eric Kuljac, was euthanized because of his undisclosed injuries. The other horse apparently wasn't injured. Santa Anita has had five horse deaths since Dec. 26, two days before the winter-spring meet began. Last year, 37 horses died at the Southern California racetrack. Tikkun Olam's death was the first that occurred on the main dirt surface this year. A horse died Friday and another died Saturday. 575

A person was rescued Monday after falling into Oregon's Crater Lake — a dormant volcano. The man fell 800 feet down into the caldera near Rims Village, the US Coast Guard said.Rescue teams descended about 600 feet into the crater and could hear the man yelling further down into the crater. The man, who has not been identified, was hoisted and transferred to a hospital in Bend, Oregon, for treatment. His condition and the extent of his injuries were not immediately available.Earlier in May, park officials warned visitors that rocks and snow near the edge of the caldera were unstable and could give way without warning."A few times every year, visitors get too close and fall, often resulting in severe injury or death. Rangers are trained to rescue these individuals, but it may take hours to reach them and puts us at risk too," a post on the parks Facebook page explained. The crater's depth of 1,943 feet makes it the deepest lake in the United States and the ninth deepest in the world, according to the National Park Service. This is not the first time this year a person has fallen into a volcanic caldera in the United States. In May, a man visiting the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, was rescued after 1223
A Wisconsin school district says it will not allow a high school cheerleading team to honor their slain teammate at an upcoming football game.15-year-old Kaylie Juga was shot and killed in her own home in May. Kaylie's mother was also shot and is still recovering from her injuries. Prosecutors claim Kaylie's ex-boyfriend, 16-year-old Martice Fuller, pulled the trigger.Kaylie's teammates on the Bradford High School cheer team planned to honor her at halftime of a high school football team. They also planned to wear blue T-shirts — Kaylie's favorite color — during the event. But the students were told by the Kenosha Unified School District that the remembrance would not be allowed."They can't hold up a picture of a girl that was murdered that went to that school and was a cheerleader. That is sickening to me," Jenna Tranberg, a friend of Kaylie's, said.Tranberg made the comments at a school board meeting for the district's budget. Board Members could not respond because of open meetings laws and advice from legal counsel.Earlier Tuesday, the district released a statement saying anyone not associated with the school was free to honor Kaylie, but the cheerleaders and others would not be allowed."The District will not sanction any memorials or acknowledgments because it would be legally required to do so for all students involved in order to protect the District against possible legal claims," the statement read. "Instead, the District will remain neutral. While the District fully supports students and staff in moments of crisis, it cannot allow memorializing or acknowledging one student without allowing it for both."Friends attending the meeting were disappointed in the district's decision."She touched so many people's lives and this was finally going to be a thing where we all come together and remember her, and they took it away," Makayla Falcone, a friend of Kaylie's, said. 1916
