New information has been released in the FBI and White Lake Township police investigation into the murder of professional poker player Susie Zhao. Police were called to find her burned body on July 13 at 8:05 a.m. in the secluded Pontiac Lake Park in Oakland County.RELATED: Man accused in poker player's brutal death had lengthy criminal historyAccording to court documents obtained by 7 Action News: She was identified by fingerprints. She was bound with zip-ties, and sexually assaulted with a large object before being "lit on fire until she died.”Cell phone records show she met with Jeffery Morris the evening before. After Morris was arrested, he told police he picked up Zhao on Watkins Lake Road and they both checked into the Sherwood Motel at around 9:26 p.m.Morris told police they left the motel to buy some alcohol at a party store and returned to the motel.Morris said Zhao left the motel at midnight “and took all of her belongings including her cell phone with her.”According to the court documents, cell phone records indicate that Zhao’s cell phones did not leave until around 5 a.m. And surveillance footage near the motel and phone records show Morris left at that time and drove to the secluded park. Other evidence shows he was there about seven minutes.Days later, the police and FBI would locate Morris and his vehicle in Ypsilanti. A search found several footwear impressions, several hairs, fibers and other items with possible blood stains.Investigators also found duffle bags with Morris’ identification, a fitted bed sheet with apparent blood stains as well as a wooden baseball bat with a possible big blood stain. Those are being tested at the Oakland County Crime Lab.Police said last week the motive for the murder and the reason Morris and Zhao met are still under investigation.Early speculation was "Susie Q," as she’s known in the poker circuit, may have been killed in connection with being a professional player living in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.But now the evidence shows this was home grown deadly trouble that she faced when she met up with Morris, a convicted sex offender. Nominations for the 61st Grammy Awards were announced Friday and one of the nominees was brought to tears live on television.Singer Janelle Monáe -- along with Alessia Cara and Shawn Mendes -- announced some the nominees on "CBS This Morning." Monáe became emotional when her "Dirty Computer" was announced for album of the year.She said she was moved because the project is "about community," especially the LGBT community of which she is a part."I hope they feel seen," Monáe said. "I hope they feel loved and I hope they feel celebrated."Rap artists Kendrick Lamar and Drake received the most nominations with eight and seven, respectively. Singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile received six nominations.Fans of H.E.R., the singer/musician who wears sunglasses and guards her privacy to keep the focus on her music, had plenty to celebrate with her multiple nominations.She scored nods for best R&B album, album of the year and best new artist.Female artists dominated top categories this year. News helicopters in Philadelphia captured demonstrations turning into lawlessness as several people were seen breaking into businesses Tuesday evening.Philadelphia Police said that a crowd of approximately 1,000 people were looting a business in Philadelphia on Tuesday.The unrest began on Monday after Walter Wallace Jr., a 27-year-old Black man, was shot and killed by officers in Philadelphia. Spokesperson Tanya Little of the Philadelphia Police said that Wallace was ordered to drop a knife before being shot by officers.The incident was captured on video from a bystander, and Little confirmed that two of the officers were wearing body worn cameras. Whether that video will be publicly released will be determined in the coming days.Video of the incident showed officers pointing a weapon at Wallace. After trying to back away from Wallace, officers then fired at him.Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said that a full investigation of what transpired is underway.Shaka Johnson, an attorney representing the Wallace family, told the Inquirer that family called for an ambulance and not officers. NEW YORK — A wealthy benefactor of the disgraced leader of an upstate New York self-improvement group has been sentenced to more than six years in prison in connection with a federal sex slave case.Seagram’s liquor fortune heiress Clare Bronfman appeared in federal court Wednesday in Brooklyn, where a judge handed her an 81-month prison sentence. She was immediately taken into custody to begin her sentence. Bronfman's lawyers wanted her to get only three years of probation, but prosecutors said she deserves five years behind bars for her support of Keith Raniere.Raniere was convicted of charges last year accusing him of turning some of his followers into sex slaves branded with his initials.Raniere is known as the leader of the group NXIVM. Prosecutors say the organization operated like a cult, in which members formed a secret sorority comprised of brainwashed female “slaves” who were forced to have sex with Raniere.Long affiliated with NXIVM, Bronfman reportedly provided millions of dollars to bankroll Raniere and his program of self-improvement classes and paid for lawyers to defend the group against a lawsuit filed by critics.Last year, Bronfman admitted in a guilty plea that she harbored someone who was living in the U.S. illegally for “labor and services.” She also claimed to have committed credit card fraud on behalf of Raniere.Bronfman’s lawyers argued that she deserved leniency because she didn’t have direct involvement with the most disturbing allegations in the case, but prosecutors said she deserved severe punishment because Raniere likely couldn’t have gotten away with what he did without her. 1640

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials are taking a new tack in the coronavirus fight by emphasizing recent research that finds a mask protects the person who wears it. Previously, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised masks because of medical evidence that it stops people who are infected with coronavirus — whether they know it or not — from spreading it to others. But this week the CDC posted on its Web site a scientific brief discussing recent studies finding that a wearer gets some protection even if an infected person has no mask.The brief added that adopting a universal masking policy, "can help avert future lockdowns, especially if combined with other non-pharmaceutical interventions such as social distancing, hand hygiene, and adequate ventilation.""Experimental and epidemiological data support community masking to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2. The prevention benefit of masking is derived from the combination of source control and personal protection for the mask wearer. The relationship between source control and personal protection is likely complementary and possibly synergistic, so that individual benefit increases with increasing community mask use," the brief read. Researchers pointed to the coronavirus outbreak on the USS Theodore Roosevelt as an example of the effectiveness of mask-wearing, saying, "use of face coverings on-board was associated with a 70% reduced risk."The brief said more research is needed to identify combinations of materials used for face coverings to maximize blocking and filtering effectiveness, as well as durability and comfort. 1620
