Disney Parks announced Thursday that one of its most beloved rides will be getting a makeover.According to a press release, "Splash Mountain" at both Disney World and Disneyland will be re-themed after Disney's 2009 name film "Princess and the Frog" — the first Disney movie to feature a Black princess character."Splash Mountain" opened at Disneyland in 1989 and at Disney World in 1992. Since its opening, the ride has been themed after the 1946 film "Song of the South" — a movie set in the Antebellum South that, since its release, has been criticized for its handling of race.Earlier this month, a viral petition called on Disney to re-brand the ride at all of its parks amid nationwide protests against systemic racism. However, in its press release, Disney says that it has been working on re-imagining Splash Mountain since last year."(The Princess and the Frog is) a great story with a strong lead character, set against the backdrop of New Orleans and the Louisiana bayou," the company said in a blog post. "In 1966, Walt (Disney) himself opened New Orleans Square when it became the first new "land" added to Disneyland park, so it feels natural to link the story and the incredible music of "The Princess and the Frog" to our parks."Disney says a timeline on the project will be available "soon."A version of Splash Mountain also exists at Tokyo Disneyland in Japan. Early Friday morning, the Senate passed a .3 trillion spending package that will increase funding for the military and domestic spending and will keep the government funded through the end of September, sending the legislation to the President for his signature house ahead of a midnight deadline.The Senate passed the bill after a whirlwind day where at least two Republican senators held up the legislative process and made it appear unclear whether the bill could pass ahead of the deadline. The bill passed 65-32, averting a potential government shutdown and funding the government through September 30.The House passed the legislation earlier Thursday, voting 256-167 with Democrats and Republicans coming together to pass it less than 24 hours after the 2,300-page bill was made public. 802
EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a car slammed into an El Cajon power pole Tuesday afternoon, leaving some residents without power.The crash happened on Madison Avenue and 3rd Street near Madison Avenue Elementary School."It was just kind of like a loud boom," said Julia Jorgensen, who heard the crash. "The car was smoking at the front for a little bit, so I was really scared that it was going to blow up."According to police in El Cajon, the crash caused extensive damage. In photos from the scene, the power pole appears to be split in half. SDG&E turned off power approximately 120 residents in the area as a precaution. Power was restored for most residents by 4:30 p.m.The crash also closed Madison Avenue between 3rd Street and Macon Street, creating traffic as parents picked up their children from one of several schools in the area.Police say the incident is being investigated as a DUI crash. A witness described the driver as stumbling out of the vehicle shortly after the crash."I ran up to him. I said, 'Who was in the car, like who's in there?' and he was really really out of it. His eyes were rolling in the back of his head," Jorgensen said. "He was kind of falling everywhere. He was really really sweaty.At one point, she says he even laid down in the grass, curled up like a ball.Both the driver and passenger were responsive but taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
