(KGTV) - More than two and a half years after Team 10 first reported about a North County property management company accused of stealing money from clients, the victims are finally getting their money back.Kelley Zaun owned Carousel Properties, a Carlsbad property management company. Victims first told Team 10 in 2016, they hired her to pay fees associated with their rentals. They said she did not pay those fees. She was accused of taking roughly 0,000 from victims, according to investigators.In 2018, Zaun faced 29 felonies for embezzlement, according to Deputy District Attorney Anna Winn. Zaun entered into a plea deal and agreed to a year in custody. With the help of the DA’s office, Zaun’s former clients were able to get their money back through the Department of Real Estate’s Consumer Recovery Account. Other victims’ payments are still processing. They have been able to reimburse 2,084.68 thus far.The Consumer Recover Account is an option for fraud victims when trying to recoup money from the person who took it from them. In order to utilize the fund, Lerner said there must be a criminal or civil court order for the defendant to pay back money he or she took. If victims cannot get refunded from the person who stole it, they can apply through the Department of Real Estate (DRE).Winn said she volunteered to be the victims’ liaison with the DRE, as the process for reimbursement is lengthy and many of the victims were elderly. One of Zaun’s victims told Team 10 he is “extremely grateful” for the DA’s office work on this case. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- Carlsbad is known for The Flower Fields, Legoland, golf, and its family-friendly beaches, but the Village by the Sea is also home to several hidden gems. "Most people have seen us on top of the hill, on top of the Flower Fields. Certain times of the day, you might notice a beautiful crystal piece, sparkling at the top of our building. Still, most people aren't aware they can come and visit, it's probably one of the best-kept secrets in Carlsbad," said Cathryn Ramirez, Director of Global Business Development at the Gemological Institute of America. The Institute is the global headquarters of the GIA. The non-profit is home to a museum, research lab, and school. Students come from around the world to study gems and jewelry design. "We have not only our education campus here, but we have our laboratory where we do grading of gemstones, we do research here, and it's our corporate offices as well," said Ramirez. The GIA houses more than a thousand gems and pieces of jewelry. Tours are available by reservation. Another one of Carlsbad's best-kept secrets is a short walk from the GIA. "It's off the beaten track. Everyone knows where Legoland is, Legoland is a great attraction here in Carlsbad or the Flower Fields, and then we're tucked in right between those two large attractions. The Calavera Hills Nature preserve is a 110-acre site that includes more than four miles of hiking and biking trails. Obviously, it's no threat to anyone, but it's a beautiful place to go visit," said Rosanne Humphrey, Coordinator for the city's Habitat Management program. CHANDLER, Ariz. - A woman in the East Valley of Arizona was stung by bees more than 200 times and a few fellow runners just happened to be in the right place--and the right time--to help.Usually cooler weather keeps bees away, but with more trees and flowers in bloom after the recent rain, experts say the bees are sticking around."I was taking my dog out for a walk, it's a normal route," said Marisa Brazil.Her daily routine along Paseo Trail in Chandler took a terrifying turn Monday morning."She was starting to flail her arms and I kind of looked at my best friend, Julie, and said, 'she's either having a really good time or something's happening,'" Brazil said.It did not take long for both women to realize something terrible was happening to the runner ahead of them on the trail."She was really screaming, like loud," said Julie Sternberg. The trained lifeguard ran to help while Brazil called 911."I tried to run up the other side and then some bees came at me," Sternberg said.Sternberg was stung on her head as the bees forced her back. She then saw two other strangers battling their way forward."They kept retreating. So at that point once I figured out there was bees, I figured out that's why. I saw one guy kept moving back," said Sternberg. "She was still screaming the whole entire time, so it was pretty scary," said Brazil.First responders eventually took over. The woman who was stung posted to Facebook from her hospital bed, thanking the strangers who tried to help. The woman who was stung is expected to recover. Her family said she was released from the hospital Monday afternoon.Now Brazil is warning others to be on alert."Just letting people in my community know that there is something going on there," Brazil said.A technician at The BEEHIVE Bee and Wasp Removal in Gilbert said if you find yourself surrounded by a swarm, swatting is the worst thing to do because that only agitates the bees. He says the best thing to do in a similar situation is remain calm, cover your face and nose, and run as fast as you can away from the area. 2126
